The village has a thriving primary school and cricket team, a church and popular pub The Galton Arms, named after the family who formerly owned the house. Excellent schools abound in the area, including Bromsgrove School, King's School and the Royal Grammar School in Worcester. Road communications are quick and easy to the Midlands and Gloucester from the M5 Junctions (5 and 6), as well as east towards Stratford, north east to Redditch and south east to Evesham. Historical Note Himbleton Manor Estate was acquired by Sir Douglas Galton, second son of Howard Galton of Hadzor. Born in 1822 and an engineer, a date of 1868 on one of the buildings suggests when much of the property was built. On his death in 1899, the Estate passed to his daughter Mrs Gascoigne, whose descendants continue to own the property to this day. Himbleton Manor The Manor is surrounded by its own land. The main tree lined drive is an elegant entrance leading to the front of the house. There is also planning permission to reinstate the part cobbled back drive which leads to the village. More recently, the house has been divided to form a number of dwellings. Whilst it remains in need of refurbishment, the overall size of the Manor of about 9943 sq ft provides immense and ample scope as well as flexibility in its accommodation. From a significant and impressive private residence to far broader uses, Himbleton Manor provides many opportunities for a variety of uses, apart from being a private and exclusive estate. On the ground floor, some divisions have been removed to illustrate the depth and size of key reception rooms, such as the Drawing Room. Other divisions and openings can equally be made to form impressive bedrooms with ensuite facilities on the first floor. There are four staircases serving the first floor from various parts of the house. The self- contained flat, above the garages, is linked to the house, as Approximate Gross Internal Floor Area Reception 4111.4 sq ft / 382 sq m Bedroom This plan is for guidance only and must not be relied upon as a statement of fact. • Lime Kilns in Worcestershire
Lime Kilns in Worcestershire Nils Wilkes Acknowledgements I first began this project in September 2012 having noticed a number of limekilns annotated on the Ordnance Survey County Series First Edition maps whilst carrying out another project for the Historic Environment Record department (HER). That there had been limekilns right across Worcestershire was not something I was aware of, particularly as the county is not regarded to be a limestone region. When I came to look for books or documents relating specifically to limeburning in Worcestershire, there were none, and this intrigued me. So, in short, this document is the result of my endeavours to gather together both documentary and physical evidence of a long forgotten industry in Worcestershire. In the course of this research I have received the help of many kind people. Firstly I wish to thank staff at the Historic Environmental Record department of the Archive and Archaeological Service for their patience and assistance in helping me develop the Limekiln Database, in particular Emma Hancox, Maggi Noke and Olly Russell. I am extremely grateful to Francesca Llewellyn for her information on Stourport and Astley; Simon Wilkinson for notes on Upton-upon-Severn; Gordon Sawyer for his enthusiasm in locating sites in Strensham; David Viner (Canal and Rivers Trust) in accessing records at Ellesmere Port; Bill Lambert (Worcester and Birmingham Canal Trust) for involving me with the Tardebigge Limekilns Project; Pat Hughes for her knowledge of the lime trade in Worcester and Valerie Goodbury

It was first collected in 1693 and continued to be collected until 1963. Before 1780 Land Tax Assessments are rare but from then until 1832 duplicates of the Land Assessments had to be lodged with the Clerk of the Peace and are to be found in County Quarter Sessions records. In 1798 the tax was fixed at 4 shillings in the pound and this was made as a permanent charge on the land. The landowners were given the choice of paying 15 years of tax in a lump sum and by 1815 one third of landowners had taken this option. Worcestershire Land Tax Returns can give: Rental value of the owner’s property. Names of owners and copyholders. Names of occupiers. Names or description of property or estate. The amounts of tax levied. Those owners exonerated from paying the tax annually.
