DECEMBER 2018 SHOW N ’TELL by Bill Timoszyk

• At our meeting of Dec 4th, 2 members brought in items. Carl Chase brought in original paper from his Uncle. The first item, printed in 1950 was a service dept. brochure entitled “How to sell Shock Absorbers”. It was centered toward the older car service market, as it depicted Fords from 1928 thru 1941.

• Carl’s second item was an original 1954 sales aid for Genuine FoMoCo antifreeze. Interesting to note, that in 1954 Ford was selling both Methanol and Permanent types of anti-freeze. Thru the years I have seen the older yellow colored style of cans from “Genuine Ford” anti-freeze, but not the FoMoCo cans.

• Member Larry Wolohon brought in two recent issue books on the history of the Fruehauf Trailer Company, a mainstay in Detroit for years.

Roving Reporter - Craigslist by Lou Ironside

Since there were no swap meets this month, I will show something I found on the Flint edition of Craigslist. It is a Ford 16” wheel and tire made in to a coffee table. Please excuse the photo as it is less than perfect, since I printed it off the computer. The individual was asking $360. For the table which seemed a little high…until I did the math. A 16” wheel is probably $25., powder coating is another $35. The new hub cap would be in the $35. dollar range, a new 16” whitewall is over $100, then there is the tube. A big circle of glass isn’t cheap, and then the wrought iron base would have been hand made. Guess that $360. Wasn’t a bad price after all! I would have loved to buy it, but the question was where could I put it ? According to the wife, the living room was NOT an option! Swap meet season is only a few short weeks away; Jackson towards the end of January, Saginaw the following week, and then following that is the big Kalamazoo show. Will see you at any and all!!

At one time or another we have all visited a dealership showroom to look at or possibly buy a new car. There are the salespeople, the balloons, and all the other things which are in the showroom to tell you how great the deals are and how much the car belongs in your driveway. Did you ever wonder what it was like to buy a car over 100 years ago? Well, the attached photo is of a Chalmers dealership in the 1912 timeframe. Times were different than, and the dealership showroom certainly was different. Notice the lack of signs or photos on the wall, and certainly the way the salesman and customer are dressed. The Chalmers was built in Detroit, and if look closely, the vehicle is right hand drive. It wasn’t until the 1913/1914 that the automakers started to convert to the left hand drive we are accustomed to today. The Chalmers was a mid-priced car in its day, and eventually became a distant relative of the Chrysler Corporation. As to the photo, it was an advertising photo which was taken by an associate of my grandfather, and that is my grandfather acting as the customer. My grandfather ran a freelance photographic company, and Chalmers was a customer along with many other long gone makes and models of cars.

By 1941, Ford had sold more than 4 million . Changing over to war production resulted in the loss of consumer sales but a gain in experience building heavy-duty military truck and four-wheel-drive personnel carriers. A year after consumer production resumed in 1947, Ford leveraged that knowledge to provide even more innovations for its customers. “After the war, a lot of rural Americans moved to urban and suburban centers looking for work, and many took their Ford pickups with them,” said Kreipke. “Ford saw this as an opportunity, and began work on the next generation of trucks for 1948, what came to be known as F-Series Bonus Built trucks.” This first-generation F-Series covered Classes 2 through 7 capacities – from the half-ton F-1 to the much larger F-8 cab- over truck. Then, in 1957, Ford tested out a car-based truck – the Birth of a legend Falcon Ranchero. Marketed as “More Than a Car! More Than Nine years after the first Model T saw Ford customers asking for a vehicle a Truck!,” this light-duty truck brought car-like amenities to that could haul heavier loads and provide greater utility for work and deliveries. consumers. The Model TT came with a heavier-duty frame capable of carrying one ton of payload. The factory price was $600; 209 were sold that year. Trucks were fast becoming universal family vehicles, in addition to being work trucks, according to Kreipke. Instead of renting a truck for a big job or for towing, people now had ones they could use for work during the week, then hitch a trailer to and haul the family in for weekend getaways. Ford trucks were adapting to the changing, more active American lifestyle. Premium edition trucks, such as the Lariat package introduced in 1978, offered more comfort features including air conditioning, leather trim, and power windows and locks. In 1982, Ford charted a different course with an all-new compact truck – Ranger. Versatile and efficient, Ranger quickly built a reputation for being tough and capable, leading it to thrive in diverse markets around the world. Now, after a seven-year hiatus, Ford is reintroducing an all-new Ranger in North America in 2019. Expanding the Built Ford Tough Lineup Ford reset the benchmark again in 1998 with the introduction of F-Series Super Duty. Dearborn is always full of interesting Ford items, and rightfully so, as its Henry Ford’s Hometown. This month we are visiting the lobby of the Fordson Hotel, on the SE corner of Michigan Avenue and Jonathon in Downtown Dearborn. Now operated under the banner of “America’s Best Value Hotel”, this is located approximately 2 blocks east of the old Dearborn City Hall. In the lobby resides a restored 1927 coupe. A bit dusty but, but a good looking Model T none the less. The car carries 1927 Minnesota license plates. I inquired to the desk clerk about its history or longevity here, and he had no knowledge of either. When was the last time you saw a solo Model T parked in a heated and air conditioned room?
