  • The Relationship Between Fame and Fortune in Performance Related Careers with A
International Journal of Health and Economic Development, 6(2), 36-46, July 2020 36 The Relationship between Fame and Fortune in Performance Related Careers with a Shorter Life Expectancy due to Accidents, Addiction, Homicide and Suicide S. Eric Anderson, Ginny Sim La Sierra University, Riverside, California, USA [email protected] Abstract Around 92% of the US population dies from natural causes. However, only 49% of famous musician stars die from natural causes resulting in performance related careers being one of the most dangerous professions in the United States. According to this study, musicians were 20 times more likely to die from an addiction, four times more likely to die from an accident, six times more likely to die of homicide and four times more likely to die of suicide than the general population. Why do dangerous profession lists fail to include musicians in the high risk career list categories? It is not the profession that is dangerous, but primarily the personality type gravitating towards the profession that creates risk. Should certain personality types be directed to non-performance related careers? Probably not, since performing on stage may be a more effective intervention than psychiatric treatment. Keywords: Accidents, Alcohol, Anxiety, depression, homicide, musicians and suicide. Introduction Is there a relationship between fame in performance related careers with the shorter life expectancy due to accidents, drug overdose, homicide and suicide? The number of musicians, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain, Amy International Journal of Health and Economic Development, 6(2), 36-46, July 2020 37 Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Prince who died of addiction is staggering.

  • Be My Baby”—The Ronettes (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Cary O’Dell
“Be My Baby”—The Ronettes (1963) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Cary O’Dell The Ronettes Original label Phil Spector Instantly infectious and memorable, “Be My Baby” has been described as the “Record of the Century” and the “greatest pop record ever made.” It was recorded by the Ronettes in 1963. It was written by Phil Spector, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich and was produced by Phil Spector. It was named to the National Recording Registry in 2006. The Ronettes were a group of girls from Spanish Harlem, sisters Veronica (“Ronnie”) and Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. Before becoming a trio, the young women were a group of five joined by two other cousins, Elaine and Diane. (Sometimes they were also joined by their male cousin, Ira.) They sang together and perfected their harmonies at their grandmother’s house before branching out to play local dances and talent contests. Along with refining their line-up and sound, the girls also defined their look. In his biography of Phil Spector, author Mick Brown says of the group: The standard demeanor of girl groups of the day was one of demure innocence…But the Ronettes looked as if it was a Saturday night and they were cruising for trouble—figure- hugging dresses, hair piled into improbable beehives and lashings of mascara, which transformed the youthful high school girls into vamps. Today, the Ronettes are nearly as remembered for their look (which would later be largely carbon-copied by Amy Winehouse) as for their sound. After first being signed by and recording for the Colpix label (under the name Ronnie and the Relatives), the Ronettes came to the attention of Phil Spector who immediately took a liking to the group and especially to its de facto leader Ronnie.

DOCUMENT RESUME ED 435 403 IR 057 553 AUTHOR Halliday, Blane TITLE An Examination of Essential Popular Music Compact Disc Holdings at the Cleveland Public Library. PUB TYPE Dissertations/Theses (040) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC04 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

  • AMERICAN LITERARY MINIMALISM by ROBERT CHARLES
AMERICAN LITERARY MINIMALISM by ROBERT CHARLES CLARK (Under the Direction of James Nagel) ABSTRACT American Literary Minimalism stands as an important yet misunderstood stylistic movement. It is an extension of aesthetics established by a diverse group of authors active in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that includes Amy Lowell, William Carlos Williams, and Ezra Pound. Works within the tradition reflect several qualities: the prose is “spare” and “clean”; important plot details are often omitted or left out; practitioners tend to excise material during the editing process; and stories tend to be about “common people” as opposed to the powerful and aristocratic. While these descriptors and the many others that have been posited over the years are in some ways helpful, the mode remains poorly defined. The core idea that differentiates American Minimalism from other movements is that prose and poetry should be extremely efficient, allusive, and implicative. The language in this type of fiction tends to be simple and direct. Narrators do not often use ornate adjectives and rarely offer effusive descriptions of scenery or extensive detail about characters’ backgrounds. Because authors tend to use few words, each is invested with a heightened sense of interpretive significance. Allusion and implication by omission are often employed as a means to compensate for limited exposition, to add depth to stories that on the surface may seem superficial or incomplete. Despite being scattered among eleven decades, American Minimalists share a common aesthetic. They were not so much enamored with the idea that “less is more” but that it is possible to write compact prose that still achieves depth of setting, characterization, and plot without including long passages of exposition.
