The Operation of Cyprus Evening Technical Schools for Vocational THE OPERATION OF CYPRUS EVENING TECHNICAL SCHOOLS FOR VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR ADULTS PRESENTED BY: YIANNIS KAPITANIS, ASSISTANT HEAD TEACHER AND SUPERVISOR OF AFTERNOON AND EVENING CLASSES OF TECHNICAL SCHOOLS OF LARNACA 1 To give a chance to adults who: • Would like to update their skills and competencies in their profession • have dropped out of school and are employed in professions without the necessary qualifications • want to get into a new profession and acquire new skills • have never had the opportunity to attend a Technical School in the past • want to further their education and training in higher Institutes, Colleges and Universities 2 • to provide quality education and training • enhance skills and competencies • help people enter the labour market with new skills • improve people as individuals and community members • assist individuals to keep their jobs • help people avoid unemployment and social exclusion 3 Based on the needs of the adults VET offers two different types of Education and Training: 1. Afternoon and Evening Classes of Technical Schools 2. Evening Technical Schools Both are offered and administrated by the Technical and Vocational Education Department, which is under the Ministry of Education and Culture. 4 Two Programs Running A. Three Year program: • duration is 3 academic years • classes take place in the evening twice a week • teaching and training is offered only in the specialization chosen by the adults • final exams take place at the end of every year • adults receive a Diploma on their specialization • diploma is only recognized in the work market 5 B. One Year program: • lasts 80 hours yearly • classes take place in the evening once a week • includes only training • no final examination • adults receive a Certificate of attendance Major characteristic: All adults pay tuition fees for their education and training 6 For adults who: • have a good command of the Greek language • dropped out of school a) in their initial secondary education or b) in the upper secondary education (before graduation) • graduated from upper secondary general education • graduated from Colleges and Universities • graduated from any secondary private schools Almost everyone can enroll 7 take place: • in all VET schools across Cyprus • in classrooms and training labs where the infrastructure is modern and meets the labour market’s standards Thus teaching is enhanced by the use of technology (computers, projectors, television, internet access, etc.). In addition, VET teachers have professional experience prior to teaching, therefore it ensures the quality of teaching and learning outcomes. 8 History First Evening Technical School • established in Nicosia in September of 1999 • operating and servicing adults the last 14 years • 160 students are currently enrolled Second Evening Technical School • established in Limassol in February 2012 • Currently is operating with 94 adults 9 One Program Running: Prerequisite to attend: adults must complete their compulsory education (lasts 9 years) • duration of program is four 4 academic years • classes take place in the evening • adults attend school five days a week • teaching includes General and Technical education courses • The curriculum is the same as the one offered in the morning classes 10 • curriculum can some times be adapted to the particular needs and characteristics of the students who attend the evening classes • final exams take place at the end of every year • Graduation Diploma is awarded and is equivalent to the one awarded by the morning Technical Schools and General High Schools Major characteristic: Education and Training is free 11 Initial Secondary • provided that they hold an initial Education Graduates Secondary Education Certificate • Adults are only obligated to Upper Secondary attend the technological and Education graduates laboratory classes of their chosen field of study or specialization Apprenticeship • Adults are entitled to enroll graduates provided they succeed in the written admission exams Adults who attended private schools and the • provided they succeed in the language of instruction written admission exams is other than Greek 12 After completing their studies adults have the opportunity to: • be employed directly into the labour market with favourable terms of employment • pursue further studies in private Institutions of Tertiary Education in Cyprus, or overseas • compete in the National examinations for acceptance in public Institutions of Tertiary Education, either in Cyprus or in Greece 13 Our success in both programs of VET relies mostly on the methodology we apply in both the teaching and training methods we use. Methods of teaching: Combination of Theoretical and practical part Stages: 1. Theory 2. Demonstration 3. Students Practical training 4. Evaluation 14 Instructor teaches the theoretical part of the lesson by using various tools such as: • projector • tv • computers • internet • CDs • videos etc. 15 Instructor demonstrates the practical part of the method to be used for the particular lesson 16 Students practice what they have learned during the practical demonstration by the instructor. The instructor assists and guides the students 17 At the end of the class, students: 1. get evaluated by the instructor 2. evaluate themselves 3. evaluate the training process and the product 4. make suggestions on how to improve: a) the quality of training and b) the quality of the finished product 18 THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION THE END 19 .

    Published on Eurydice (https://eacea.ec.europa.eu/national-policies/eurydice) 2020 Responses by the Ministry of Education to the Covid-19 outbreak In order to counter the Covid-19 emergency, the government of Cyprus decided to suspend the in- school operation [1] of all public and private schools at all levels on March 11, 2020. Within a few days after school closure, teachers were recalled to schools to teach through distance synchronous and asynchronous methods. Teachers worked mainly from home using online tools and were present at the school only when necessary. Existing infrastructure was used to support distance learning. Priority was given to students’ access to a computer/tablet and internet at home. A distance synchronous education programme had been implemented using Microsoft Teams with more than 110 000 teachers and students having access to the software. Intensive online teacher training courses were provided by the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus. Supportive educational material for all students was uploaded onto the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, (MECYS) web page and on individual school web pages. Public and private television channels supported overall efforts by broadcasting lessons and other educational programmes, especially for younger students. In addition, the website [2]was created in order to support students and to help teachers' efforts in distance learning. The material posted, as well as guidance from other sources, has been useful to parents and guardians trying to support children living at home. According to the government plan for reopening schools, priority was given to the final year of upper secondary education.

The question that this re- search is trying to find out is who the pre-school language learners are. The data are gathered us- ing two different kinds of research methods: observation and interview. It is a case study in which 20 kindergarten children are taught English with a puppet named Pepe and students are observed whether or not they learn the language. In addition, two kindergarten teachers are interviewed about the use of puppets in English language classrooms. The data show that puppets are engaging and motivating for young learners. They are effective tools, which can be used in English language classrooms. However the study is limited to the role of puppets in kindergarten education in Eng- lish language classrooms. Further studies may focus on the role of puppets in kindergarten educa- tion in other fields such as science, art, and so on. To continue to fulfil the expectations of the Cypriot economy and society, VET is undergoing essential reforms. The structure of VET is being transformed by the introduc- tion of a new modern apprenticeship, an alternative pathway for young people between 14 and 20, and the establishment of post-secondary institutes for technical and vocational education and training, which will offer students an intermediate level of education. The imple- mentation of the new modern apprenticeship has begun and it will become fully operational by 2015. Secondary technical and vocational education provides a broad range of initial training programmes in Cyprus. Its new curricula, expected to be developed by 2015, will enhance the attractiveness of VET and match specialisa- tions with the current needs of the labour market. VET is an important part of and features prominently in the Cyprus lifelong learning strategy. Its main actions include the enhancement of lifelong guidance and counselling services, and the development of a national qualifications framework (NQF).     Vol:8 No.1 2014 www.mreronline.org The institution of compulsory preschool education in Greece Vasilios Oikonomidis University of Crete, Faculty of Education, Department of Preschool Education, University Campus, Rethymno, Greece Email: [email protected] Abstract: Compulsory preschool education for 5-year-old children was instituted by law in Greece in 2006. However, the implementation of the law encountered several problems. This article, on the occasion of the recent institution of compulsory preschool education in Greece, discusses in a critical manner the views that have been voiced in favour and against it and offers an insight of the corresponding situation in other European countries. This article analyses the corresponding legislative course in Greece, focusing on data from the last three years. It identifies and presents oversights and omissions that characterize the implementation of the aforementioned law. Finally, the article offers suggestions that can contribute to the improvement of preschool education in Greece. In this way, the article criticizes the Greek government policy, a policy that governments from other countries must avoid during their efforts to institute compulsory preschool education. Stavroula, Kyriakides Leonidas, Koutselini Mary Abstract This paper presents the results of a study concerning the application of differentiated instruction in mixed ability classes, in which 24 elementary classes of 479 Cypriot pupils participated. The study provides evidence about the effect that systematic differentiated instruction in mixed ability classes has on students’ achievement. The results of the experimental group of the research that had received differentiated instruction were compared by multilevel regression with the results of the control group that had not received differentiated instruction. The comparison aimed at investigating the difference in achievement between the two groups and the identification of other factors that affected students’ achievement between and within these groups. A multilevel structure equation model was used to demonstrate the relations and the impact of the change of teaching practices, monitored by a differentiated instruction observation key, over students’ achievement. Along with the main research question determining the impact of differentiated teaching on students’ achievement, research results gave substantial evidence over the dimensions of quality and equity of education effectiveness. Quality and equity dimensions of education effectiveness consists of main conflict issues for differentiation instruction in mixed ability classrooms.
