Our Youth Symphony I had such a moment in June, at the year-end performance of the Hochstein Youth Singers. Orchestra in concert Connections One young woman, a senior in high school, was performing with the Youth Singers for the last time. She had a solo in the song “For Good” (from Wicked), and she sang beautifully! But when she got to the line “because I knew you, I have been changed for good” (what a wonderful lyric!)—she began to cry. So did I, and so did nearly everyone in the audience. It was powerful to see how much this student’s experience—singing with others, supported and inspired by the wonderful work of her director, Maryellen Giese —meant to her. In 2012-13, through all our programs, events, and outreach, we worked together to provide opportunities for students of all ages, all levels of experience and abilities, and ϐ ǡǡ our community of musicians and dancers. SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS OF THE YEAR INCLUDE: Ȉ ͶǡʹͲͲ ǡ ǡ programs, onsite and off. Ȉ and events of all kinds. Ȉ RocMusic, a new community-based after-school program for City of Rochester children and youth, in collaboration with Eastman School and Eastman Community Music School, Rochester City School District, the City of Rochester, and Ǥ Ȉ supported our Hochstein at Canandaigua extension program for the past six Ǥ ϐ ͵ͲǡʹͲͳ͵Ǥ Ȉ ̈́ʹ͵ǡͲͲͲ ͳǡͲͲ music, dance, and music therapy programs who could not have participated without this support. Ȉ ǡ ǡ ϐ Ǥ Special appreciation goes to our dedicated, talented faculty and staff, who keep the mission of the School foremost in their minds and hearts, and who embrace the many challenges of our work with enthusiasm.
