The seven-year-old made an impressive reappearance when winning the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle and warrants respect as she bids to defend her crown, but she looked flat when turned over by Silver Streak in the Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle last time and can be taken on with the other mare in the field, HONEYSUCKLE, today. Whereas the former arrives under a bit of a cloud, Henry De Bromhead's charge produced a career- best performance when bolting up in the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown last time, a jaw- dropping effort that convinced connections to have a crack at this. She turned over the very smart Benie Des Dieux in last season's Mares' Hurdle, so that ticks the travelling and handling Cheltenham boxes, and is fancied to maintain her unbeaten record this afternoon, to make it 11 out of 11 under Rules. Tom O'Brien has picked up a nice spare ride on the aforementioned Silver Streak and he could run into a place. Top Tip: HONEYSUCKLE (10) Watch out for: EPATANTE (9) © 2021 At The Races. Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.

2021 CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL PREVIEW A comprehensive preview with expert contributions from: • Steve Lewis Hamilton - Professional backer • Donn McClean - Racing writer and presenter Steve (SLH) assesses the home challenge whilst Donn (DMC) analyses the Irish contingent. Prices shown correct at the time of writing. • Richard Hoiles • John Hunt Top racing commentators provide their on-course insight. • Ten year trends The telling stats from Paul O’Hara • Exclusive horses to follow Direct from a variety of Lambourn trainers The going is expected to be Good to Soft with dry, mild weather over the four days. Tuesday 16th 1.20 Supreme Novices' Hurdle (Grade 1) 4yo+ 2m½f SLH: Metier, Soaring Eagle and at big odds Grumpy Charlie are the pick of the British trained horses. Metier was a decent performer on the flat in Ireland and has progressed from race to race over hurdles since moving to Harry Fry. He is a strong stayer who performs well on soft ground. It is taken as fact that the course will be prepared to ride no firmer than Good to Soft on the opening day. Soaring Glory showed marked improvement when impressively winning the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury. He appears to be less dependent on ground conditions than Metier and looks sure to figure. On soft ground Grumpy Charlie could run better than his odds suggest if allowed to take his chance. Despite not being totally straightforward, he is improving with racing experience. DMC: At the start of the season, it looked like Appreciate It was going to be Willie Mullins’ Ballymore Hurdle horse, and that Ferny Hollow was going to be his Supreme Novices’ Hurdle horse.

  • Faugheen Injured, Misses Cheltenham
THURSDAY, 18 FEBRUARY 2016 DWCC CONTINUES AT MEYDAN FAUGHEEN INJURED, The Dubai World Cup Carnival continues to crescendo with a MISSES CHELTENHAM little more than six weeks to racing’s richest day, and Thursday’s program is highlighted by the G3 Dubai Millennium S. for middle-distance turfers. Haafaguinea (GB) (Haafhd {GB}) could be the slight favorite in what figures to be a wide-open affair, assuming he doesn’t regress off a half-length victory in a 12-furlongs handicap Jan. 21 first-up for nearly 11 months. The chestnut, who will be ridden by Freddy Tylicki was a two-time winner at the Carnival in 2015, including a 3/4-length success over the distance last February before going missing. “We were very pleased with his winning return,” said trainer Saeed bin Suroor. “He is a horse who always tries his best and we thought he merited a step up in grade, so this looked a good opportunity. Obviously he will be facing stronger opposition, but he really likes Meydan and we are hoping for a good run.” Cont. p4 Faugheen in action at Kempton over Christmas | Racing Post Faugheen (Ire), (Germany) the reigning champion hurdler and previously a long odds-on favourite to defend his crown at Cheltenham in four weeks’ time, has picked up a suspensory ligament injury and has been ruled out of action for the rest of KY DERBY TOP 12, SPONSORED BY WINSTAR the season. Trainer Willie Mullins broke the news before racing Bill Finley’s top two are on track for a pre-Derby clash.

  • Cleeve-Racing-Cheltenham-Yankee-2021.Pdf
Introduction Cheltenham with empty stands… it's going to feel a bit bizarre but with the Irish set to come it's still going to be top class action and arguably racing has never had more importance than it has at the moment. Here at Cleeve we always put out an EW Yankee at this time of year. We see it mainly as a bit of fun that adds interest to the week as a whole. However we've used all of our expertise and put in as much time analysing the races in question, and should all the selections win (yes, we know it's a big 'if'!), while we wouldn't say that £79K is a life-changing amount of money… it certainly helps to keep the wolf from the door! Win, lose or draw 2021 was the year that we hope marked the bottom of the curve and that next year's Festival sees packed stands again and we hear the traditional 'roar' when the tapes go up on the Supreme Hurdle. Copyright Cleeve Racing 2021 Page 1 Tuesday 16th March Champion Hurdle Selection: Abacadabras Age: 7 Trainer: Gordon Elliott Owner: Gigginstown House Stud Best odds: 12/1 The top few in the market here; Epatante, Sharjah and Silver Streak look too short in the betting. Epatante disappointed behind Silver Streak last time but that was down to a canny ride on the winner. Sharjah is interesting if he can replicate his Leopardstown form here. He was second behind Epatante in this last year but the 7lbs mare's allowance for Epatante is likely to make the difference again.

  • Carroll Finds Success, Stability in New Role
SUNDAY, 7 JANUARY 2018 CARROLL FINDS SUCCESS, THE EAGLE DIGS DEEP FOR THIRD L'ORMARINS QUEEN'S PLATE by Liesl King STABILITY IN NEW ROLE In front of a large blue-and-white attired crowd, Legal Eagle (SAf) (Greys Inn) produced probably the best and most heart stopping victory of his career to win the R1.5-million G1 WFA L'Ormarins Queen's Plate S. over 1600m at Kenilworth on Saturday. It was Legal Eagle's third straight victory in the race, and while their hearts may have been in their mouths, the crowd cheered their favourite home. The early part of the race was uneventful as Legal Eagle with Anton Marcus in the saddle, slotted in on the rail from barrier two. From barrier nine, Corne Orffer was forced to bring Captain America (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) out wide, making his way around the field, before slipping in on the rail in front of Legal Eagle. Knowing Captain America is not blessed with a sprint finish, Orffer wasted no time idling in front and sent the strapping bay for home. With a quickly lengthening gap aided by an unusual tailwind, Anton Marcus had no choice but to give David Carroll | Coady photography chase and Legal Eagle was forced to dig deep as he chased down his old nemesis. By Bill Finley Racing for the first time in the yellow and purple silks of Braam His father, his brother and his nephew all turned out to be top van Huyssteen, William Henderson and Hedley McGrath, Legal riders, but David Carroll just wasn=t blessed with the jockey Eagle was closing the gap, but due to the fast pace, it was not as gene.

  • January 2014 Edition of the Monthly Newsletter from Donn Mcclean Racing
Welcome to the January 2014 edition of the monthly newsletter from Donn McClean Racing. Looking ahead We are into the depths of winter racing now with its hock-deep ground and its course inspections. (Time to start following the Venetia Williams horses then, and the progeny of Whipper.) As long as racing passes those inspections, we are in for some top- class racing this month. This weekend features the Classic Chase at Warwick, the Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle at Punchestown, and the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton, accompanied, as it is this year, by the Tolworth Hurdle, re-routed from abandoned Sandown last Saturday. No Sprinter Sacre in the Clarence House Chase (you might know it better as the Victor Chandler) at Ascot on 18th January, but the race could be all the more intriguing as a contest for his absence, while the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock on the same day may not be what it used to be, but it is still the Peter Marsh Chase. Then it is on to Gowran Park for the Thyestes Chase on 23rd, before the final weekend of the month brings with it the Argento Chase at Cheltenham on 25th and the Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown on 26th, for which all three big guns – Hurricane Fly, Jezki and Our Conor – are reportedly on track. Horses To Follow Several horses who have been noted as Horses To Follow are set to run this month. Sandown winner Deep Trouble holds an entry in both the Tolworth Hurdle and the two-mile handicap hurdle at Kempton on Saturday.
