New Dances Edition 2020–21
New Dances Edition 2020–21 Welcome to New Dances at Juilliard! After nearly a year of working through the pandemic, I have been reflecting on what I have learned as the dean and director of Juilliard Dance. First, and most obviously, I have learned that our dancers thrive on opportunities to move within the spaces in our building. The chance to be together, even in small groups, makes all the difference. The transference of energy from one artist to another has a cumulative effect, leading to an environment steeped in generosity and gratitude. Second, I am proud of how we, as a community, have problem-solved and found creative solutions despite the restrictions. In fact, the restrictions and challenges have amplified our innovative thinking. And last, this time has solidified my belief that we are an incredibly resilient group of artists who are going to seize the day, and live boldly in each moment. The work that I see unfolding at Juilliard is nothing short of remarkable. All of the works that you will see have been created in pods of no more than eight dancers. The choreographers have collaborated with the students both on Zoom and in-person, finding ways to generate movement without touching or partnering. Everyone from our Dance Division staff to our production team dedicated their energies to giving the dancers a meaningful learning and performance experience. In turn, the dancers gave their all. Seeing these performances, beautifully documented on film, reminds me of the power of dance and music to tell stories and communicate in the universal language of the soul. -

Welcome to the Joffrey Ballet School’s Trainee Program Catalog for 2020-2021! At the Joffrey Ballet School, we focus on preparing students for a professional career as a dancer. We offer two programs: a Ballet Trainee Program, and a Jazz and Contemporary Trainee Program. The Joffrey Ballet School is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), meets the U.S.A. Department of Education standards for a school of vocational training, and is a Licensed Private Career School in the State of New York (under the supervision of the New York Education Department’s Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision). In this Catalog, you will find a range of material about our two programs, including details about auditions, course descriptions and performance opportunities, career planning and mentoring, as well as information on housing arrangements, fees and financial assistance. If you have any further questions after reading the Catalog, please contact one the program’s Directors or Coordinators, listed in the Contacts section. Questions related to the process of enrollment should be director to one of our Enrollment Agents listed in the Contacts section. The student should be aware that some information in the catalog may change. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Grew from a Now-Fabled Performance in March 1958 at the 92Nd Street Y in New York City
ALL ABOUT AILEY Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance. The Ailey company has gone on to perform for an estimated 23 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents -- as well as millions more through television broadcasts. In 2008, a U.S. Congressional resolution designated the Company as “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world,” one that celebrates the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance heritage. When Mr. Ailey began creating dances, he drew upon his "blood memories" of Texas, the blues, spirituals and gospel as inspiration, which resulted in the creation of his most popular and critically acclaimed work, Revelations. Although he created 79 ballets over his lifetime, Mr. Ailey maintained that his company was not exclusively a repository for his own work. Today, the Company continues Mr. Ailey's mission by presenting important works of the past and commissioning new ones. In all, more than 200 works by over 80 choreographers are part of the Ailey company‟s repertory. Before his untimely death in 1989, Alvin Ailey designated Judith Jamison as his successor, and over the next 21 years, she brought the Company to unprecedented success. New Dances Edition 2019 Welcome to New Dances: Edition 2019 Earlier this fall, four highly regarded choreographers stepped into our studios and began to experiment with ideas and phrases with our very eager and talented students. The dance studio, abuzz with anticipation, transformed into a lab of sorts. Improvisation, creation, editing, expanding, and exploring were at the very heart of the creative process, where the relationship between choreographer and dancer revealed a reciprocal partnership that produced something wholly unique and exciting. Creating new dances is a tricky business for sure; there is no guarantee that all of the elements will come together with a perfect synergy, but the task is to take the risk and have faith that with experienced ingenuity, the magic of theater and movement will bubble to the surface. With this edition’s choreographers, Stephen Petronio, Andrea Miller, Jamar Roberts, and Amy Hall Garner, the New Dances formula is already tried and true. Add the excellence of Juilliard Dance, the students of the Juilliard music division, and our production team, and you have an undeniably astounding compounding of talents. The New Dances series offers an exciting glimpse of the progression of technical and artistic growth from the first- to the fourth-years of Juilliard Dance. I couldn’t be more proud of our students—the generative, creative spirit that is so crucial to the vibrancy of our world is wonderfully alive in these hallowed halls. She served on the editorial collective of The Feminist Wire and is a member of the Jang! Collective providing popular education tools, platforms, and accompaniment to activists working for radical transformation. Abbas has served on the board of Greenpeace Africa, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Eastern Africa, the African Sex Workers Alliance, and the Center for Citizen Participation in the African Union, and in advisory roles to UHAI – the East African Sexual Health and Rights Initiative, the Heartland Alliance, and The Other Foundation. Ursula Burns, Chairman and CEO of VEON Ursula Burns is chairman and chief executive officer of VEON. She began her career at Xerox in 1980 as a mechanical engineer intern, moving up the ladder until being named CEO in 2009, the first black woman ever to head a Fortune 500 company. President Barack Obama appointed Burns vice chair of the Pres- ident’s Export Council in 2010, and she is vice chair of the Business Roundtable. Choreographers & Composers 2020 Welcome to Choreographers & Composers! After nearly a year of working through the pandemic, I have been reflecting on what I have learned as the dean and director of Juilliard Dance. First, and most obviously, I have learned that our dancers thrive on opportunities to move within the spaces in our building. The chance to be together, even in small groups, makes all the difference. The transference of energy from one artist to another has a cumulative effect, leading to an environment steeped in generosity and gratitude. Second, I am proud of how we, as a community, have problem-solved and found creative solutions despite the restrictions. In fact, the restrictions and challenges have amplified our innovative thinking. And last, this time has solidified my belief that we are an incredibly resilient group of artists who are going to seize the day and live boldly in each moment. The work that I see unfolding at Juilliard is nothing short of remarkable. Led by Juilliard faculty Janis Brenner, Jerome Begin, and Daniel Ott, Choreographers & Composers is a celebrated cross-divisional course. Six choreographers from the Class of 2022 were paired with six composers in the spring semester of 2020. The initial conversations and seeds of music and movement were generated via Zoom. Finally, in October, the choreographers were able to work with the second-year class of dancers, in small groups of four, in our studios at the school. Everyone from our Dance Division staff to our production team dedicated their energies to giving the students a meaningful learning and performance experience.
