The appropriate scientific name for each orchid taxon is based on data published in the scientific or historical literature, and/or from study of the relevant type specimens or illustrations and study of taxa as herbarium specimens, in the field or in the living state. Structure of the index: Genera and species are listed alphabetically. Accepted names for taxa are in bold, followed by the author(s), place and date of publication, details of the type(s), including where it is held and assessment of its status. The institution(s) where type specimen(s) are housed are recorded using the international codes for Herbaria (Appendix 1) as listed in Holmgren et al’s Index Herbariorum (1981) continuously updated, see [http://sciweb.nybg.org/science2/IndexHerbariorum.asp]. Citation of authors follows Brummit & Powell (1992) Authors of Plant Names; for book abbreviations, the standard is Taxonomic Literature, 2nd edn. THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister’s delegate approved this Conservation Advice on 16/12/2016 . Conservation Advice Caladenia fulva tawny spider-orchid Conservation Status Caladenia fulva (tawny spider-orchid) is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) effective from the 16 July 2000. The species was eligible for listing under the EPBC Act as on 16 July 2000 it was listed as Endangered under Schedule 1 of the preceding Act, the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). Species can also be listed as threatened under state and territory legislation. For information on the listing status of this species under relevant state or territory legislation, see http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/sprat.pl The main factors that are the cause of the species being eligible for listing in the Endangered category are the species’ restricted geographic range, small number of locations, its fragmentation and the projected decline due to the threats it is facing. Description The tawny spider-orchid (Orchidaceae) is an herbaceous perennial geophyte which is 25 cm high, with a single leaf 12–25 cm long and one to two flowers. It is a deciduous orchid that dies back annually to a small, spherical, underground tuber (Backhouse & Jeanes 1995). The single leaf is narrow, green with reddish spots at the base and sparsely hairy (Entwisle 1994; Backhouse & Jeanes 1995). The erect hairy flower stem grows to 25 cm high and has one or two creamy white to pale yellowish flowers with variable red streaking to 8 cm wide (Backhouse & Jeanes 1995; Jeanes & Backhouse 2006). -
7Th International Orchid Conservation Congress
7TH INTERNATIONAL ORCHID CONSERVATION CONGRESS Jodrell Laboratory Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 28 May – 1 June 2019 Welcome to Kew! The International Orchid Conservation Congress (IOCC) series started in Western Australia in 2001, and subsequent meetings were held in Florida, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, La Réunion and Hong Kong. At the meeting in Hong Kong, it was decided that IOCCVII should be held at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The title for IOCCVII is “Orchid Conservation: the Next Generation”, and we hope that the focus will be on the importance of involving the next generation of orchid conservation biologists and on the use of next-generation techniques. We are delighted to welcome more than 150 delegates from around the world to share their experiences of orchid conservation with each other. Orchids are among the most highly threatened groups of plants, with threats to orchids including habitat destruction, legal and illegal trade and climate change. As a result, our mission to conserve orchids is of increasing importance – if we don’t act, then we may be the last generation to see some groups of orchids, notably slipper orchids, in the wild. We are grateful to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for the use of the venue and for logistical support. The Lennox Boyd Trust, the Linnean Society of London and Orchid Conservation International and friends and family of the late Amy Morris provided financial support which has allowed us to provide bursaries for orchid specialists from Developing Countries so that they can attend the congress. We have an exciting and busy programme – with many talks and posters and other events including a demonstration of orchid propagation, a “World Café” session on conservation planning (arranged with the Conservation Planning Specialist Group) and a meeting of the Orchid Specialist Group. -

Description The Coloured Spider-orchid is a deciduous, perennial, terrestrial orchid emerging annually from an underground tuber that grows 5–25 cm in height. The single leaf is linear-lanceolate, densely felted with a red base and grow to 10 cm in length. Flowers are about 5 cm across, generally cream-green with reddish or purple-brown markings, dark glandular tips to all segments. They are, however, variable and can sometimes be wholly purple-brown, pale cream-green with reddish labellum calli and marginal teeth, to wholly pinkish to dark reddish. -

Investigation into the Use of Molecular Methods to Distinguish between Species of Caladenia Subgenus Calonema Chutima Kongjaroon A thesis submitted in a fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Engineering and Sciences Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science Victoria University Melbourne Australia 2012 Thesis abstract The phylogeny of typical spider orchid (Caladenia subgenus Calonema) is investigated for the first time. The analyses were performed using 17 RAPD and 10 ISSR primers on 30 taxa representing the three spider orchid groups (the dilatata, patersonii and reticulata groups) yielding 135 RAPD and 63 ISSR polymorphic markers. The average number of polymorphic markers produced from 17 RAPD and 10 ISSR primers were 5.12 and 4.48, respectively. 76 RAPD markers and 38 ISSR markers were polymorphic within spider orchid species. The highest number of amplified DNA fragments were produced from OPE15 (8.77 fragments) and UBC 842 (6.71 fragments) while OPF04 (2.93 fragments) and UBC 825 (3.02 fragments) gave the smallest number of amplification products. The average Dice genetic similarity of pairs of individuals within a species ranged from 0.772 to 0.939 based on RAPD and from 0.770 to 0.976 for ISSR data. The 117 spider orchid individuals analysed by RAPD, ISSR and combined data using cluster analysis were classified into three groups that correlate with those based on morphological analysis: reticulata, patersonii and dilatata. The phylogenetic analysis based on three data sets, presented relationships at the intraspecific level that were well supported by bootstrapping. However, the interspecific relationships within the groups remained unclear. -
