Base game Manual V0.4 Environment Remove any objects in the playing area that you might touch or hit while playing with your body. Without VR glasses, the game will not run. A (free) Steam account is also required. Also installed must be the VR software "SteamVR" (when using HTC VIVE or the Valve Index) or the additional software "Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR" for the use of Windows Mixed Reality glasses on Steam with "SteamVR". Before the first launch, a room measuring should also have been done in SteamVR (when using the HTC VIVE or the Valve Index). When using Windows Mixed Reality glasses, there is an option to change the position of the floor from the height. The controllers of the VR headset should also be connected to the VR system and be charged. Despite year-long efforts in education, studying and under- standing physical phenomena still proves to be a challenge to both learn- ers and educators. However, with the current rise of Virtual Reality expe- riences, interactive immersive simulations in 3D are becoming a promis- ing tool with great potential to enhance and support traditional class- room setups and experiences in an engaging and immersive way. The paper describes the evaluation of the physics laboratory Maroon pre- sented on two distinct VR setups: first, a mobile and cost-efficient but simpler VR experience with the Samsung GEAR and second, a more interactive room scale experience with the HTC VIVE. First results of both preliminary empirical studies indicate that the VIVE environment increases user interactivity and engagement whereas the GEAR setup benefits from portability and better flexibility. In this paper we discuss device-specific design aspects and provide a comparison focusing on as- pects such as immersion, engagement, presence and motivation. One of these innovations is the development of Virtual Reality (VR) hardware. Innovations in hardware and software have made this technology broadly accessible with options ranging from cell phone based VR kits made of cardboard to dedicated headsets driven by computers using powerful graphical hardware. VR based educational experiences provide opportunities to present content in a form where they are experienced in 3 dimensions and are interactive. This is accomplished by placing users in virtual spaces with content of interest and allows for natural interactions where users can physically move within the space and use their hands to directly manipulate/experience content. VR also reduces the impact of external sensory distractions by completely immersing the user in the experience. These interactions are particularly compelling when content that is only observable through a microscope (or not at all) can be made large allowing the user to experience these things at scale. This has great potential for entomological education and outreach as students can experience animated models of insects and arthropods at impossible scales. VR has great potential as a new way to present entomological content including aspects of morphology, physiology, behavior and other aspects of insect biology. This demonstration allows users of all ages to view static and animated 3D models of insects and arthropods in virtual reality. -
