He was also awarded with an E.P. Thompson Memorial Bursary, granted by the Society for the Study of Labour History, which was used for the same purpose. The picture on the cover of this book was taken on 24 July 1937, on the occasion of the opening of the labour movement’s open air theatre at ‘De Paasheuvel’ in Vierhouten, the Netherlands. The VARA was present at this occasion to broadcast a report of the festivities. The picture comes from the collection of the International Institute of Social History (IISH), Amsterdam. Conclusion 371 Samenvatting 399 Dankwoord 407 Curriculum vitae 411 Sources and literature 413 Index 423 INTRODUCTORY PART INTRODUCTORY 8 Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 An empty void As a former Director of Talks of the BBC Hilda Matheson was well informed about the secrets of broadcasting, but in the mid-1930s she confessed that radio was still something of an enigma to her.1 Matheson had left the BBC in late 1931, but in the years before she had established her reputation as someone with a keen eye for the innovative potential of broadcasting and a strong belief in its value as a means of education and enlightenment. Her resignation did little to curb her interest for broadcasting, and she continued to write about the subject in the following years for various publications.2 Among these was the left-leaning political journal The Political Quarterly, which in 1934 had asked her to elaborate on the relationship between politics and broadcasting. In taking up the invitation, Matheson opened her article by reflecting on the medium-specific qualities of radio: ‘of all forms of communication broadcasting is the most elusive’: ‘you cannot see it, nor feel it, nor hear it, except at the fleeting moment of its first projection into the ether’.3 With politics being an equally elusive category, Matheson continued by arguing that the interplay between politics and broadcasting was a highly slippery one.

    CM/PO 350 MEDIA & UK POLITICS IES Abroad London DESCRIPTION: The British public is offered full coverage of political issues and events with half a dozen national daily ‘broadsheet’ and several tabloid newspaper, satellite and terrestrial broadcasting networks including the well-respected BBC. This number of British media means that political stories are told in multiple versions and are submitted to multiple interpretations. While journalists claim that they seek to report the facts, politicians gripe that the facts take second place in the media race to report ‘news.’ This stimulating course examines a number of issues and current topics in the news that demonstrate the long-term struggle for power between the conventional media (press, TV, radio news media as well as social media and digital channels), UK politicians and political institutions. Additional questions to be explored are: How does this struggle affect the delivery of news to the British public; what are the opportunities and challenges of media coverage of parliament’s proceedings, and whether the UK model of public service broadcasting has a future. Drawing on topics from current affairs, students will be encouraged to probe the consistency and contradictions of Britain's political leaders, appraise party political agendas, and explore how interest groups exercise influence in a mature democracy. Molendijk University of Groningen, Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, Oude Boteringestraat 38, Groningen, 9712GK, The Netherlands [email protected] Abstract In 1947 the liberal Protestant minister Willem Banning drafted a new programme for the Labour Party, in which the party dropped the Marxist view of history and class struggle. New Labour in the Netherlands was envisioned as a party that strove for a democratic and just society. Banning’s role in reforming the Labour Party was part of his broader project of breaking down structures of socio-political segregation that had existed since the end of the nineteenth century. Banning argued that the Labour Party had to abandon its atheist ideology to open up to Protestants and Catholics. This article will examine Banning’sviewsandideals and show how he contributed to the transformation of Labour into a social democratic party and seek answer to the question: how could a liberal Protestant minister become the main ideologue of the Labour Party? Introduction A touching photograph shows Willem Banning being decorated by Prime Minister Willem Drees on the occasion of his sixty-firth birthday in February 1953. The demeanour of the two social democrats displays a degree of ambiguity: they both seem to be fully enjoying this special moment, while at the same time being sceptical of such honours. In his words of gratitude Banning said that his resistance had been over- come by his friends’ insistence that he should accept the distinction.1 The Dutch Labour Party could not have been what it was in the 1950s without the decisive input of Drees and Banning.

    Kiezers en kabinetten De PvdA als Tarool-ideaal' Spaanse burgeroorlog George van den Bergh Tegen de achtergrond van de naderende parlementsverkie­ zingen, die over de eventuele doorbraak van de Partij van de Arbeid naar een ‘40 procent-partij’ uitsluitsel moeten geven, wordt in dit jaarboek aandacht besteed aan de plaats van de PvdA in het naoorlogse politieke systeem. Andeweg en Hille- brand nemen een nooit gepubliceerde studie van Den Uyl uit 1951, ‘het eerste professionele verkiezingsonderzoek in ons land’, tot uitgangspunt voor een verkenning van de elec­ torale lotgevallen van de PvdA sinds 1945. In aansluiting daar­ op gaat Anneke Visser in op de naoorlogse kabinetsforma­ ties in ons land, waarbij de sociaal-democraten, althans na 1958, nogal eens buiten spel kwamen te staan. En dat, volgens de auteur, niet alleen door andermans toedoen... Madelon de Keizer belicht een hoofdstuk uit de geschiedenis van het ontstaan van de naoorlogse politieke verhoudingen in ons land. Hoe groot, vraagt zij zich af, was de invloed van Het Parool— in de oorlog als verzetsblad opgericht — op de vorming van de PvdA in 1946? Daarbij komen onder andere de meningsverschillen ter sprake — bijvoorbeeld tussen Koos Vorrink en Paroo/-voorman Frans Goedhart — die al tijdens de bezetting ontstonden over de wijze, waarop de vooroor­ logse partijpolitieke structuur doorbroken moest worden. Voorts in dit jaarboek, in de vorm van artikelen van Gerrits en Prak, aandacht voor de Socialistische Internationale van het interbellum, desai, die aan interne strijd over de hou­ ding tegenover het communisme ten onder ging, en voor de opstelling van de Nederlandse sociaal-democratie tegenover een van de voor links meest traumatische gebeurtenissen in deze periode, de Spaanse burgeroorlog.

    “ON AN EQUAL FOOTING WITH MEN?” WOMEN AND WORK AT THE BBC, 1923-1939 Catherine Murphy Goldsmiths College University of London PhD 2011 1 Declaration of Authorship I, Catherine Murphy, hereby declare that all the material contained in this thesis is my own work. 2 Abstract This thesis is a study of women’s employment in the BBC during the 1920s and 1930s and poses the questions – what was the BBC like as a place for women to work, and how equal were they? While there has been wide research into a variety of aspects of the BBC during the inter-war years, to date there has been only cursory consideration of the role of women in the Company/Corporation. The BBC is a particularly significant organisation to study because women worked at all levels, apart from the very top; as charwomen and kitchen hands; as secretaries and clerical staff; as drama producers, advertising representatives and Children’s Hour Organisers. Prior to the Second World War, three women, Hilda Matheson, Mary Somerville and Isa Benzie, attained Director status. The BBC viewed itself as a progressive employer, one that supported equal promotion prospects and equal pay. However, understated sexual discrimination was commonplace and in 1932, a Marriage Bar was introduced. The practice of marriage bars was widespread in the inter-war years yet the BBC was never fully committed to its bar and ‘exceptional’ married women and women judged to be useful to the Corporation continued to be employed and retained. This study considers the many different experiences of women and work at the BBC: married and single, waged and the salaried, young and old; graduate and non-graduate.
