Hsu ©2011 Jonathan Paul O'Conner ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT JONATHAN O'CONNER: Diego López de Ayala and the Intellectual Contours of Sixteenth-Century Toledo (Under the direction of Lucia Binotti) This dissertation focuses on one of the protagonists in the political, religious and intellectual life of sixteenth-century Toledo, the largely forgotten Diego López de Ayala (c. 1480-1560). He was a member of one of the era's most influential noble families and a stand-in and envoy of the Archbishop of Toledo, Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, to the court of Ferdinand the Catholic in Spain and that of the future Emperor Charles V in Flanders. Afterwards, he played an influential role in the spread of Italian Renaissance aesthetics in Spain as superintendent of works at the Toledo Cathedral for nearly forty years. He also translated into Spanish the prose sections of two Italian works, the Questioni d'amore of Giovanni Boccaccio's Filocolo (Treze questiones) and the Arcadia of Jacopo Sannazaro. Past scholarship on López de Ayala has often considered minimal his political and literary roles. Others have recognized his importance as a contributor to Toledo's cultural life, but say little beyond noting that we know too little about him. My research reaffirms the prominent political and cultural presence of this highly significant figure and fills in many of the gaps left by previous scholarship. Diego López de Ayala figured prominently in the cultural and political life of Toledo after the death of Cardinal Cisneros. Additionally, the dissertation examines the significance of López de Ayala's published translations to the Spanish print culture and canon of courtly iii literature with special emphasis on the performance elements and socialized reading practices of the period. The dissertation begins to reconstruct the humanistic intellectual community, whose Erasmian leanings were destined to disappear with the coming of the Counter-Reformation. iv For Eric, whose encouragement, incredible patience and loving dedication have made this possible. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I have had much kind assistance and support during the completion of this dissertation. Before the new King's arrival in Spain, the Archbishop of Toledo, Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros, served as regent after Ferdinand the Catholic's death in 1516, while the young Charles was still in Flanders. After the King's arrival, the imperial court resided in Toledo in 1525 and 1538-39. The city was a center of intellectual and cultural activity throughout the period, playing host to influential authors and humanists. One of the protagonists in the political, religious and intellectual life of Toledo was the relatively unsung Diego López de Ayala (c. 1480-1560). López de Ayala was a member of one of the era's most influential noble families of the city and a descendant of the Canciller Pero López de Ayala. He was a canon at the Toledo cathedral from 1506 and held the dignity of vicario del coro from 1525 and the office of obrero mayor (superintendent of the cathedral works and building) from 1518 to 1557. Prior to these ecclesiastical appointments, he had served as the envoy of the Cardinal Cisneros at the court of Ferdinand the Catholic in Spain and that of the future Emperor Charles in Flanders. Additionally, he was one of the founders of the Colegio de Santa Catalina in Toledo, which would later become the Real Universidad de Toledo. López de Ayala also translated into Spanish the prose sections of two Italian works. The first was the Questioni d'amore, extracted from the fourth book of Boccaccio's Filocolo. López de Ayala's translation of this work appeared in print under two titles: Laberinto de Amor (Seville, 1541 and 1546) and Treze questiones (Toledo, 1546 and 1549; Venice, 1553). The second translation was of Jacopo Sannazaro's Arcadia, which also resulted in five editions: Toledo, 1547 and 1549; Estella, 1562; and Salamanca, 1573 and

Amid the effigies of saints, holy bishops, abbots, and Christian monarchs—defenders of the faith—there stands a fine polychrome statue of an Islamic doctor of theology. This cathedral was not begun until the early thirteenth century; but the memory of the saintly Mussulman was still held in such regard at Toledo a century and a half after the reconquest of the city from the Arabs, that his image was set up in one of the two most prominent positions of honour. These two conspicuous sites are the two pillars which, with the two others beside the twin pulpits, sustain the vault of the main chapel. The one on the Gospel side has a statue of the mysterious Shepherd of Las Navas—thought by some to have been an apparition of St. Isidore the Farm-Hand, Patron of Madrid—who showed King Alfonso the Good the secret mountain pass that enabled the Christian army to win the decisive victory of the Reconquest at Navas de Tolosa in 1212, and who vanished after showing the path to the leaders; the statue is said to have been made from a rough sketch drawn by the king himself. And in the corresponding position on the Epistle-side pillar stands the Moslem who won the great victory of renunciation and peace.

Se dedicó fundamentalmente a la pintura y a la fotografía. Fue profesor de la Escuela de Artes y Oficios Artísticos y uno de los fundadores de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes y Ciencias Históricas de Toledo, llegando a ser Director. Aficionado a la arqueología, plasmó en la fotografía y en la pintura una serie de yacimientos muy importantes, lo que resultó ser muy útil para su conservación posterior. Pero es gracias, fundamentalmente, al trabajo de su nieto Lorenzo Andrinal Román, investigador tenaz que ha sabido recopilar minuciosamente datos y documentos, con el respaldo de la Diputación Provincial de Toledo, que la obra de este artista está viendo la luz, mediante exposiciones fotográficas, publicaciones y conferencias. 1 A principios de 2010 la Diputación Provincial de Toledo y la familia del artista firmaron un Protocolo para la constitución del Fondo Pedro Román Martínez.

In this talk, a membrane system based general framework for modeling the dynamics of population biology computationally is presented, and some applications to phenomena at micro (quorum sensing) and macro (real ecosystem) levels are described.

El paramento externo muestra en su parte superior los escudos de la ciudad y de los almirantes, muy deteriorados y borrosos. El coronamiento aparece re- cortado por una crestería de merlones rectangulares con remate alanceolado, que dan cierta prestancia militar a la puerta. En fecha desconocida sufrió un derrumbamiento que afectó a gran parte de un arco y a la capilla que mon- taba sobre él. En la capilla que se conserva recibe actualmente culto una imagen del Cristo de las Puertas. Aunque hemos definido la Puerta de San Sebastián como esencialmente decorativa, no falta en ella una inspiración funcional que se refleja en el desdoblamiento de los arcos, singularidad acaso única en las puertas de ciu- dades del siglo xvi 9. La puerta tiene también una significación religiosa debido a la existencia de capillas en su interior y cierto matiz honorífico por la pre- sencia de emblemas heráldicos e inscripción al modo romano 10 . Generally, from a historical point of view, the choir is a semi-enclosed and privileged area reserved for the clergy, whose position and configuration gives it a private character. Regarding the generation and transformation of ecclesial interior spaces, the choir commands a role of the first magnitude. Its shape and location produce, on occasions, major modifications that significantly affect the acoustics of these indoor spaces. In the case of Spanish cathedrals, whose design responds to the so-called “Spanish type”, the central position of the choir, enclosed by high stonework walls on three of its sides and with numerous wooden stalls inside, breaks up the space in the main nave, thereby generating other new spaces, such as the trascoro. The aim of this work was to analyse the acoustic evolution of the choir as one of the main elements that configure the sound space of Spanish cathedrals. By means of in situ measurements and simulation models, the main acoustic parameters were evaluated, both in their current state and in their original configurations that have since disappeared.
