Florida, California and Texas Dominate Future Population Growth, While Michigan’s Slow Growth Moves It Out of the Top 10 Three states — Florida, California and Texas — are projected to account for nearly one- half (46 percent) of the total U.S. population growth of 82 million persons between 2000 and 2030, according to Census Bureau state population projections released today. Florida, now the fourth most populous state, would edge past New York into third place in total population by 2011; California and Texas would continue to rank first and second, respectively, in 2030. Rounding out the top 5 gainers are Arizona and North Carolina. Top five fastest-growing states between 2000 and 2030 would be Nevada (114 percent), Arizona (109 percent), Florida (80 percent), Texas (60 percent) and Utah (56 percent). Only West Virginia, North Dakota and the District of Columbia are projected to lose population over this period. (See Table 1) Michigan is projected to gain 755,728 residents over the 30-year period. This increase places it 21st among the 50 States and District of Columbia. The 7.6 percent population increase that this represents ranks 40th. Further analysis of Michigan’s projections shows that the Census Bureau expects a slowing of growth over the 30-year period, culminating in losses between 2025 and 20301. The 5-year population change rates projected for Michigan, starting with 2000-2005 are: 2.7%; 2.2%; 1.6%; 0.9%; 0.2%; and –0.2%. The results of these changes on Michigan’s ranking among the States are shown in Table 2. -

ARNADE HOUGH FLORIDA had been discovered by Ponce de Leon in T 1513, not until 1565 did it become a Spanish province in fact. In that year Pedro Menendez de Aviles was able to establish a permanent capital which he called St. Augustine. Menendez and successive executives had plans to make St. Augustine a thriving metropolis ruling over a vast Spanish colony that might possibly be elevated to a viceroyalty. Nothing of this sort happened. By 1599 Florida was in desperate straits: Indians had rebelled and butchered the Franciscan missionaries, fire and flood had made life in St. Augustine miserable, English pirates of such fame as Drake had ransacked the town, local jealousies made life unpleasant. -

DESCRIPTORS *American Indian History; *Black History; *Colonial History (United States); Higher Education; *Indigenous Populations; Secondary Education; *Slavery; State History IDENTIFIERS *Florida ABSTRACT The history of the lives of non-white peoples in the United States largely has been neglected although the Spanish bureaucrats kept meticulous records of the Spanish Mission period in Florida. These records represent an important source for the cultural history of these groups and offer new perspectives on the tri-racial nature of frontier society. Africans as well as Indians played significant roles in Spain's settlement of the Americas. On arrival in Florida the Africans ran away from the," captors to Indian villages. The Spanish, perceiving an alliance of non-white groups, sought to separate them, and passed special legislation forbidding living or trading between the two groups. There were continuous episodes of violence by the Indians who resisted Spanish labor and tribute demands, efforts to convert them, and changes in their social practices. Villages were reduced to mission sites where they could more readily supply the Spaniards with food and labor. Indian and black surrogates were used to fight the English and helped build the massive stone fort at St. Augustine. The end of the Spanish Mission system came with the war of 1700, English forces from the Carolinas raided mission sites killing thousands of Indians and taking many into slavery. -

COVINGTON * HE SEMINOLE INDIANS were relatively late arrivals to the Florida peninsula; the Apalachees, Calusas, Timucuans, and smaller tribes had settled the area much earlier. The Seminole migrations into Florida came in three distinct phases: in the period between 1702-1750, they made raids against the Spainards and their Indian allies, and although the Seminoles acquired much knowledge of the Florida terrain, no significant settlements were made. In the period 1750-1812, six or more villages were estab- lished in the northern part of Florida, and small parties explored the entire peninsula in search of deer, bear, and other game, and to make contact with Cuban fishermen. The third phase came between the years of 1812-1820, when pressures in Alabama and Georgia forced the Upper and Lower Creeks to move south into Florida. -

Title: Comparison of Spanish Colonization—Latin America and the Philippines Teacher: Anne Sharkey, Huntley High School Summary: This lesson took part as a comparison of the different aspects of the Spanish maritime empires with a comparison of Spanish colonization of Mexico & Cuba to that of the Philippines. The lessons in this unit begin with a basic understanding of each land based empire of the time period 1450-1750 (Russia, Ottomans, China) and then with a movement to the maritime transoceanic empires (Spain, Portugal, France, Britain). This lesson will come after the students already have been introduced to the Spanish colonial empire and the Spanish trade systems through the Atlantic and Pacific. Through this lesson the students will gain an understanding of Spanish systems of colonial rule and control of the peoples and the territories. The evaluation of causes of actions of the Spanish, reactions to native populations, and consequences of Spanish involvement will be discussed with the direct correlation between the social systems and structures created, the influence of the Christian missionaries, the rebellions and conflicts with native populations between the two locations in the Latin American Spanish colonies and the Philippines. Level: High School Content Area: AP World History, World History, Global Studies Duration: Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to: Compare the economic, political, social, and cultural structures of the Spanish involvement in Latin America with the Spanish involvement with the Philippines Compare the effects of mercantilism on Latin America and the Philippines Evaluate the role of the encomienda and hacienda system on both regions Evaluate the influence of the silver trade on the economies of both regions Analyze the creation of a colonial society through the development of social classes—Peninsulares, creoles, mestizos, mulattos, etc. -
