Hymn to the Theotokos, Tone IV — The mystery of all eternity, / unknown even by angels, / through you, O Theotokos, is revealed to those on earth: / God incarnate, by union without confusion. / He voluntarily accepted the cross for us, / by which He resurrected the first-created man, / saving our souls from death. Kontakion of St. Hermogenes, in Tone VI — Wasting away in imprisonment and starvation, thou didst remain faithful even unto death, O blessed Hermogenes, driving faintheartedness from the hearts of thy people and calling all to the common struggle. Wherefore, thou didst set at nought the rebellion of the ungodly and make our land steadfast, that all might cry out to thee: Rejoice, O helper of the Russian land! Epistle Romans 13:11-14:4 11 And this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof. 1 Receive him that is weak in the faith, but not for passing judgment. 2 For one believes that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eats herbs. 3 Let not him that eats despise him that eats not; and let not him who eats not judge him that eats: for God has received him. 4 Who are you that judge another man's servant? to his own master he stands or falls. Yea, he shall be held up: for God is able to make him stand. Gospel Matthew 6:14-21 14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16 Moreover when you fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your Forgiveness Sunday/Cheesefare 01 March 2020 face; 18 That you appear not unto men to fast, but unto your Father who is in secret: and your Father, who sees in secret, shall reward you openly. 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. • The Holy Great Martyr Barbara Commemorated on December 4
The Holy Great Martyr Barbara Commemorated on December 4 The Holy Great Martyr Barbara lived during the reign of Emperor Maximian (305-311). Her father, the pagan Dioscorus, was a rich and illustrious man in the Syrian city of Heliopolis. After the death of his wife, he devoted himself to his only daughter. Realizing Barbara’s extraordinary beauty, Dioscorus hid her from the eyes of strangers. He built a tower where only her pagan teachers were allowed to see her. From the tower, there was a view of hills stretching into the distance. By day she was able to gaze upon the wooded hills, the swiftly flowing rivers, and the meadows covered with a blanket of flowers; by night the harmonious and majestic heavens twinkled and provided a spectacle of inexpressible beauty. Soon she began to ask herself questions about the Creator of so splendid a world. Gradually, she became convinced that the soulless idols were merely the work of human hands. Although her father and teachers offered them worship, she realized that the idols could not have made the surrounding world. The desire to know the True God so consumed her soul that Barbara decided to devote all her life to this goal, and to spend her life in virginity. The fame of Barbara’s beauty spread throughout the city, and many sought her hand in marriage. Despite the entreaties of her father, she refused all of them. Barbara warned her father that his persistence might separate them forever. Dioscorus decided that his daughter’s temperament had been affected by her life of seclusion.

SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH november 19, 2017—9th sunday of luke he Holy Prophet Obadiah [or Abdia] is the fourth of the Twelve Minor Prophets, and he lived during the ninth century B.C. He was from the village of Betharam, near Sichem, and he served as steward of the impious Israelite King Ahab. In those days the whole of Israel had turned away from the true TGod and had begun to offer sacrifice to Baal, but Obadiah faithfully served the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in secret. When Ahab’s wife, the impious and dissolute Jezebel, hunted down all the prophets of the Lord (because of her quarrel with the Prophet Elias), Obadiah gave them shelter and food (3/1 Kgs 18:3 ff). Ahab’s successor King Okhoziah [Ahaziah] sent three detachments of soldiers to arrest the holy Prophet Elias (July 20). One of these detachments was headed by Saint Obadiah. Through the prayer of Saint Elias, two of the detach- ments were consumed by heavenly fire, but Saint Obadiah and his detachment were spared by the Lord 4/2 Kgs 1). From that moment Saint Obadiah resigned from military service and became a follower of the Prophet Elias. Afterwards, he himself received the gift of prophecy. The God-inspired work of Saint Obadiah is the fourth of the Books of the Twelve Minor Prophets in the Bible, and contains predictions about the New Testament Church. The holy Prophet Obadiah was buried in Samaria. The Holy Martyr Barlaam lived in Antioch of Syria. During Diocletian’s persecution against Christians, the aged Saint Barlaam was arrested and brought to trial, where he confessed himself a Christian.

Branislav Golic July 30, 2017 Webpage: stelijahaliquippa.com +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Greatmartyr Marina (Margaret) of Antioch in Pisidia The Holy Great Martyr Marina was born in Asia Minor, in the city of Antioch of Pisidia (southern Asia Minor), into the family of a pagan priest. In infancy she lost her mother, and her father gave her into the care of a nursemaid, who raised Marina in the Orthodox Faith. Upon learning that his daughter had become a Christian, the father angrily disowned her. During the time of the persecution against Christians under the emperor Diocletian (284-305), when she was fifteen years old, Saint Marina was arrested and locked up in prison. With firm trust in the will of God and His help, the young prisoner prepared for her impending fate. The governor Olymbrios, charmed with the beautiful girl, tried to persuade her to renounce the Christian Faith and become his wife. But the saint, unswayed, refused his offers. The vexed governor gave the holy martyr over to torture. Having beaten her fiercely, they fastened the saint with nails to a board and tore at her body with tridents. The governor himself, unable to bear the horror of these tortures, hid his face in his hands. But the holy martyr remained unyielding. Thrown for the night into prison, she was granted heavenly aid and healed of her wounds. They stripped her and tied her to a tree, then burned the martyr with fire.

Julian the Apostate (331 - 363) A.D. Julian’s Origin and Education14 Julian, the nephew of emperor Constantine the great, was born in Constantinople in 331 A.D.. He grew up in Constantinople and studied under the supervision of enunch Mardonius and Ecebolius the Sophist, who taught him rhetoric and who was a Christian at that time. The emperor made sure that Julian had no pagan masters lest he should be influenced by pagan superstitions and thus Julian grew up as a Christian. His proficiency in literature soon became so remarkable that it was said that he was capable of governing the whole Roman empire. 14 See NPNF, vol II, 2nd series, pp. 76-78 The Life of the Great Martyr St. Philopater Mercurius The holder of two Swords (Abu Seifein) On Mardonius’ death, emperor Constantius II, the son of Constantine the great and also Julian’s cousin, ordered that Julian and his half brother Gallus be sent to Macellum15 where Julian studied classics and Gallus came closer to Christianity. In 348 A.D., the two princes were summoned back to Constantinople. There, Julian came in contact with Libanius and other pagan philosophers and from that time onwards he became devoted to the pagan classics. Hearing about the influence of pagan philosophy on Julian, the emperor’s worry was aroused. Julian, between hope and fear, and anxious to lull the awakened suspicions pretended to live a monastic life, yet in private he pursued his philosophical studies. He was even appointed as a deacon in the church where he used to read the sacred writings of the Christians.
