Vatican donates masks to China to combat coronavirus outbreak VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The Vatican donated thousands of protective masks to several Chinese provinces affected by the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus. In an email to Catholic News Service Feb. 3, the Vatican press office confirmed a report that appeared in the Chinese newspaper The Global Times, which said that since Jan. 27, the Vatican has sent 600,000-700,000 protective masks to China. “The masks are destined to the provinces of Hubei, Zhejiang and Fujian,” the press office told CNS. “It is a joint initiative of the Office of Papal Charities and the Chinese Church in Italy, in collaboration with the Vatican pharmacy.” According to the Global Times report, Chinese Father Vincenzo Han Duo, vice rector of Rome’s Pontifical Urbanian College, said the donation was made possible with the help of Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner. The masks were paid for by the Vatican and Chinese Christian communities in Italy, while airline companies, including China Southern Airlines, provided free shipment, the report said. “I hope the supplies could reach where they are needed as soon as possible, so that people who are suffering the disease could feel the concern from the Holy See. The whole world is standing together to fight the virus,” Father Han told The Global Times. During his Sunday Angelus address Jan. 26, Pope Francis expressed condolences to the victims of the virus and his support for efforts to fight its spread. “I wish to be close to and pray for the people who are sick because of the virus that has spread through China,” the pope said. “May the Lord welcome the dead into his peace, comfort families and sustain the great commitment by the Chinese community that has already been put in place to combat the epidemic.”.

The commission’s first working group, which is dedicated to “listening and supporting local churches,” will work in cooperation with Caritas Internationalis, as well as the office of the papal almoner, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Vatican pharmacy.

Papal charity to run Holy Week vaccination clinic for the poor VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The Office of Papal Charities has purchased enough doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to offer inoculations in Rome to 1,200 of “the poorest and most marginalized people who, because of their situation, are the most exposed” to the coronavirus. The office, run by Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, said in a statement March 26 that the first doses would be administered during Holy Week in the atrium of the Vatican audience hall, which is where Vatican employees have been receiving the Pfizer shots since mid-January. Cardinal Krajewski’s office also encouraged people to buy a vaccine for “our poorest and most vulnerable brothers and sisters” by making a donation online at www.elemosineria.va, the address of the papal almoner’s office, which distributes charity in the name of the pope. Soon after Pope Francis and retired Pope Benedict XVI received their first Pfizer shots in mid-January, Pope Francis asked the Vatican health service to not only vaccinate Vatican residents and employees, but also the poor who live in three homeless shelters nearby. Fifty residents were vaccinated, the almoner’s office said. The Vatican also vaccinated journalists who traveled with Pope Francis to Iraq in early March and has been offering the vaccine to ambassadors accredited to the Holy See. As of March 26, the Vatican had not said how many people total had been vaccinated there. 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal
A couple of things that got my attention this past week… First, was the news coverage of the German experimental filmmaker, Wim Wenders, who is a lapsed Catholic at that, who was chosen the Vatican to produce a powerful Documentary - titled Pope Francis -- A Man of his Word. 60 Minutes did an extensive interview with him two weeks ago. The movie was released a week ago and gives a very interesting, unscripted view of Pope Francis. If you haven’t see the interview, I would recommend it. Catholic News Service described: Pope Francis: A Man of His Word, As well- crafted, sometimes moving documentary in which the pontiff largely speaks for himself, touching on a wide variety of topics of interest to believers and nonbelievers alike and setting out his vision for the future of the church. My wife and I hope to see it this weekend. Secondly, was Pope Francis’ announcement of the appointment of 14 new Cardinals. The College of Cardinals members who are under age 80 will elect the new pope. He added 11 elector Cardinals. He appointed Cardinals from Poland, Portugal, Madagascar, Iraq, Pakistan, Japan, Peru, Spain and Italy. Procurator General 7.VII.2004 Introduction When your Procurator General came to Rome more than six years ago, he had to take over the jobs of Procurator General and of Archivist from two confreres, Fr. Modesto Lo´pez of Spain and Fr. Thomas Davitt of Ireland, respectively. The ﬁrst year was lonely, hard, and challenging because he had to adjust to a new environment, learn three languages at the age of 58, and decode the mysteries of computers and information technology. Thanks to God’s grace and the very supportive and helpful Superior General and the other members of the Curia, he survived those difﬁcult years and was able to serve the provinces, confreres and the Vincentian Family in dozens of small ways. How does a Procurator General serve the provinces? 1. When the provinces write the Superior General for an invitation for obtaining a visa to come to Rome, the Procurator General is called to serve. Once the Superior General has written the letter, it is given to the Procurator General who takes the bus to the Vatican, waits in line with a dozen other Procurators General and sisters for a stamp of a seal from the Congregation for Religious, jogs to the Secretariat of State for another falling in line and stamping. Then he returns home, after doing other business, gives the letter to the secretariat which sends the letter to the province by fax or mail.

Wezwał też do modlitwy o ogólnoświatowe braterstwo. 23. marca, papież senior Benedykt XVI spotkał się w Castel Gandolfo z urzędującym papieżem. 2. maja 2013 r. emerytowany papież, po pobycie w Castel Gandolfo, powrócił do Watykanu. Zamieszkał tu w klasztorze Mater Ecclesiae.
