Greetings from the Plane of Radiance. By opening this tome, you've taken your first step toward the light that underlies the multiverse, a power to be embraced by those of sense and good conscience. Among my fellow nur—those genies indige- nous to the radiant plane—I have been gifted a great honor by our Grand Sul- tana, Almaeia al-Almas ibnat Alfajr (may she be illumined). For she has chosen me from among her sages to make a record of our knowledge of radiance, a work to have pride of place in mortal libraries and academies. I am equally pleased to have made the acquaintance of one particular mortal, Zahra yr Hama, into whose possession the Grand Sultana (may she be illumined) has placed a magical ring letting Zahra summon me as needed to record my thoughts and otherwise collaborate with me on this volume. Foremost among those warlocks with the patronage of the Grand SUltana (may she be illumined) and vizir to the noble Jassan family of Calimport, Zahra is a scholar with an expertise in radiance in her own right and may be considered my worthy co-author in this endeavor even if her name does not appear in its title. As you turn the page to begin your journey, pause to consider the many ways radiance drives existence. Sunlight grows crops that feed worlds, celestial radiance heals the sick and injured, and bioluminescent life brings light to deep sea and Underdark realms that only ever otherwise know deepest gloom. Radiant energy fuels powerful spells and artifacts, drives off those twisted by , and daz- zles with prismatic beauty. In its most basic form, light lets us see, finds what is hidden, exposes lies and reveals Truth. Its absence is a terrible thing, permitting beings of great evil to flourish as they blind and stalk prey. But whenever there is light—even a lone candle—in the darkness, that light is a beacon of hope. Ruea of the Nur \ Court Sage of the Shimmering Alcazar `L4L4 \\CC

I' VE ONLY FALLEN IN LOVE ONCE, AND AS LUCK HAD it, my beloved was a darkling named Hamara who made his home in a deep cave near my parents' keep. We dreamed of running off together once he underwent transformation into an elder of his kind, but alas, he did not survive the ritual. I keep a pinch of his ashes in a cameo clasp, with which I bind my cloak. — Kallista, Levistus tiefling sorcerer

Ages ago, a seelie fey being dwelt at the Summer Court, where he delighted in the pageantry and wondrous spectacles with which he and his fel- low courtiers diverted themselves. This fey was himself a creature of uncommon beauty even among the fey, and it was widely acknowledge he had both celestial and primal elvish ancestry. A day came, however, when this being made the mistake of betraying Titania, the court's Sum- mer Queen, and her wrath was so great that she cursed him and every member of his house, striking his name and deeds from history so he would ever after only be known as Dubh Catha ("Dark Crow" in the Common tongue). Other fey refer to the Dubh Catha's descen- dants as the dubh sith—darklings. Darkling Names At birth, all darklings are given a name, and for the most part little thought is put into this name, as parents see it as something of a placeholder—a designation of convenience to use until that day decades or even centuries hence when their child might be transformed into an elder.
