THE WORD OF GOD ______

PRELUDE In dulci jubilo Dietrich Buxtehude

INTROIT

God is in his holy temple: Let all the earth keep silence before him.

The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in: From this time forth forever more.

Unto us a child is born: Unto us a Son is given, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Alleluia!

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. Amen

HYMN: VERSES 1-3, 6 O come, all ye faithful ADESTE FIDELIS

OPENING ACCLAMATION

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

Beloved in Christ, in this Christmastide let it be our care and delight to hear again the message of the Angels, and in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger.

Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by this holy Child; and let us make this place glad with our carols of praise.

And because this of all things would rejoice his heart, let us at this time remember in his name the poor and the helpless; the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and those who mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children.

Lastly, let us remember before God his pure and lowly Mother, and all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we for evermore are one.

The Almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life; and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of Angels bring us all. Amen.

HYMN Angels we have heard on high GLORIA

THE LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE

We light these candles in hope and expectation. Jesus is the light of the World.

Candles are lit

Leader We wait joyfully for the coming of Jesus. Into the world, into the Church, into our home Come, Lord Jesus, quickly come!

Let us pray O God of hope, peace, joy, and love. As Mary and Joseph welcomed you into the world, now help us welcome you into our lives. Give us courage to hope; strength to seek peace. Fill our spirits with joy; and our hearts with love. Through Jesus Christ, the Lord of all. Amen.

Opening from: Advent Prayers for a Household by Peter John Hobbs Prayer from: Advent Wreath Liturgy by The Rev. Matthew Kozlowski

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE FIRST READING Isaiah 62:6-12

A Reading from the Book of Isaiah

Upon your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted sentinels; all day and all night they shall never be silent. You who remind the Lord, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it renowned throughout the earth. The Lord has sworn by his right hand and by his mighty arm: I will not again give your grain to be food for your enemies, and foreigners shall not drink the wine for which you have labored; but those who garner it shall eat it and praise the Lord, and those who gather it shall drink it in my holy courts. Go through, go through the gates, prepare the way for the people; build up, build up the highway, clear it of stones, lift up an ensign over the peoples. The Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth: Say to daughter Zion, "See, your salvation comes; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him." They shall be called, "The Holy People, The Redeemed of the Lord"; and you shall be called, "Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken."

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM Salvation is Created Peter Tschesnakoff

Salvation is created in midst of the earth, O God. Alleluia.

THE SECOND READING Titus 3:4-7

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to Titus

When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HYMN While shepherds watched their flocks by night WINCHESTER OLD

THE GOSPEL Luke 2:1-20

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you, Lord Christ.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see-- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

SERMON The Rev. Wes Smedley Rector

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

DURING THE PREPARATION Sussex Carol Arranged by David Willcocks

On Christmas night all Christians sing to hear the news the angels bring: News of great joy, news of great mirth, news of our merciful King's birth. Then why should men on earth be so sad, since our Redeemer makes us glad? When from our sins he set us free, all for to gain our liberty. When sin departs before his face then life and health come in its place; angels and men with joy may sing, all for to see the newborn King. All out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night: Glory to God and peace to men, now and for evermore. Amen.

As we are gathered today in this unusual way for live-streaming services, we aim to engage in all of the important parts of our weekly worship services. One of those important worship elements is receiving the offering.

Our financial gifts to support what God is doing at St. Chrysostom’s make ministry possible every day of the year. In this season of rapid change, our church is providing ministry in new ways each day by offering livestream services, carillon concerts, prayer support, parishioner outreach, children’s ministries through online connections, small gathering opportunities and staff support.

I encourage you to take a moment right now and make a gift to support ministry at St. Chrysostom’s Church. You can easily make a one-time or recurring gift by: Texting GIFTSTC to 73256 Visiting our website at: https://onrealm.org/SaintC/give/offertory

THE HOLY COMMUNION ______

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who, by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your name:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Collegium Regale Harold Darke

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory, Glory be to thee, O Lord, Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

THE PRAYER OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

I believe that you, O Lord, are truly present in the holy sacrament, and since I cannot at this time receive communion, I pray you to come into my heart. I unite myself with you and embrace you with all my heart, my soul, and my mind. Let nothing separate me from you; let me serve you in this life until, by your grace, I come to your glorious kingdom and unending peace. Amen.

HYMN Silent night, holy night STILLE NACHT The Choir sings a verse in the original German, all then join to sing verses 1-3

THE POST-COMMUNION PRAYER

Let us pray. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BLESSING

May Christ, who by his Incarnation gathered into one things earthly and heavenly, fill you with his joy and peace; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.

We hear two organ settings of the lovely 14th Century German carol In dulci jubilo. Dietrich Buxtehude’s setting features a highly ornamented melody stated in his typically bright and ornamented manner. J. S. Bach’s setting is grand and improvisatory: the statement of each phrase of the chorale is surrounded by fantasia passages.

Peter Tschesnakoff (1877-1944) was a Russian Imperial and Soviet composer, choral conductor, and teacher. He composed more than 500 choral works, 400 of which are sacred and which were composed before the Russian revolution. Indeed, his music is a major part of the Russian Orthodox choral repertoire. Salvation is created is perhaps his most well-known choral work in the United States. Written for divisi choir, it sets just one line of text in its first half, with this music repeated for the Alleluia. The work begins in four parts for men’s voices, with treble voices joining, all moving in rich, slow-moving chords. The mysterious opening in the men’s voices moves toward a majestic and thrilling culmination. The work ends with a beautiful coda with the bass voices singing on a low D.

David Willcocks was the Organist-Choirmaster at King’s College Chapel, a tenure spanning the middle of the 20th century and remembered as a particularly “Golden Age” of choral singing at King’s. He was most well- known for leading the annual Service of Lessons and Carols for Advent and for Christmas. The LP recordings and radio broadcasts are legendary. He arranged many carols for choir and organ, also writing glorious arrangements with descants of carols for the congregations to sing at these services. His arrangement of the Sussex Carol, a traditional English carol, features a sparkling organ accompaniment accompanying brilliant and imaginative choral writing.

Harold Darke (1888-1976) was organist at St. Michael’s Cornhill beginning in 1916, remaining there until 1966. During the Second World War, he deputized for Boris Ord at King’s College Chapel. He founded the Cornhill Lunchtime Organ Recitals series in 1916 which continues to this, widely accepted to be the longest-running lunchtime organ concert series in the world. He wrote several well-known choral and organ works in a beautiful, mid-20th century idiom influenced by Stanford, Parry and Vaughan Williams. The Communion Service in E (Collegium Regale) was written for the King’s College Chapel choir. It is notable for its contrasts of quiet lyricism and dramatic splendor.

Franz Gruber’s charming and original setting of Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht features a charming triple-metre rhythm called Ländler, the Austrian dance. Everyone is acquainted with the story of this beloved Christmas carol and its creation at the last minute after the organ had failed for soloist and guitar. Gruber later expanded the carol with vocal parts for choir and soloists, strings, French horn, and, of course, guitar. We hear the original melodic line with its graceful embellishments.

The arrangements of O come, all ye faithful, While shepherds watched their flocks, and Hark! The herald angels sing are by David Willcocks. The third verse of Silent night is arranged by Richard Hoskins. The descant to O come, all ye faithful is by Richard Hoskins.
