Introduction Introduction India is world’s largest produce and customer of sugar .India is second largest agro-based industry. Next only to cotton textile. this industry has a long tradition in this country .it started growing in an organized way during the 1930s after introduction of the sugar industry protection act in 1932.yadav.u.s.,sawant.b.s ,2012. As a result the number of factories significantly increased even during the first six years .from 32in 1930-31and 135 in 1935-36. During the initial period sugar industry was established almost entirely in the private sector. Maharashtra is bigger state in India .it has been all along a leading state in the industrial field . Of the country sugar industry occupies an important position on the industrial map of the state of Maharashtra. Kodkari G.U. 2012.The co- operative movement in Maharashtra has played significant role in the social and economic development of the state . Particularly in the rural areas. The first co-operative sugar factory was established in 1950 with the joint efforts of the renowned late Padmashri Dr. VitthalraoVikhePatil ,economist late Dr. DhananjayraoGadgil in Ahmednagar district The sugar factories played a major role in the socio-economic development of rural areas in Maharashtra .it has been increasing day by day. Todkari G .U 2012 The Ahmednagar district is bigger district in Maharashtra state. Ahmednagar district cover an area of 17,048 sqkm . There are 14 talukas in Ahmednagardistrict .namelyNagar,Akola, Jamkhed, Kopergaon , Karjat, Nevase , Parner , Pathardi, Rahuri, Sangamner, Shevgaon ,Shrigonda, Shrirampur, Rahata. Ahmednagar is known as sugar bowl of Maharashtra. Co-operative sector is dominant in its sugar industry. it has been playing significant role in overall socio- economic development of the district . The sugar industry has achieved spectader growth owing to the conducive environment in the district. Ahmednagar has a remarkable history and tradition of co-operative sugar industry. The district has been known as pioneer of co-operative movement .the fore co-operative sugar industry is deep rooted and grown in the state since 1950 When Pravara experiments took place in Ahmadnagar district. At present the district has 18 registered sugar factories .kadam S.M 2012. .

LOCATION & GEOGRAPHICAL DATA: Ahmednagar is the largest district of Maharashtra State in respect of area, popularly known as “Nagar”. It is situated in the central part of the State in upper Godavari basin and partly in the Bhima basin and lies between north latitudes 18°19’ and 19°59’ and east longitudes 73°37’ and 75°32’ and falls in parts of Survey of India degree sheets 47 E, 47 I, 47 M, 47 J and 47 N. It is bounded by Nashik district in the north, Aurangabad and Beed districts to the east, Osmanabad and Solapur districts to the south and Pune and Thane districts to the west. The district has a geographical area of 17114 sq. km., which is 5.54% of the total State area. The district is well connected with capital City Mumbai & major cities in Maharashtra by Road and Railway. It was a part and parcel of the Maratha and Peshvaj region, which had distinctive geographical personality. Shrigonda tahsil is located in southern drought prone zone of Ahmednagar district. It is situated partly in upper Saraswati basin a tributary of river Bhima and partly river Bhima and river Ghod another tributary of river Bhima. The length of the tahsil is 60 Km. from East to West and the width is 51 Km. from North to south. The average height of tahsil is 600 mt. (as per the toposheet) above the mean sea level. Generally slope of tahsil is from north to south. The water divide running from east to west is locally known as “Khkiba Donger”. Geographical area is about 1629.94 Km2 and it occupies 9.56 percent of the total area of the district. The total population of the Shrigonda tahsil is 315975 (as per the census of 2011). 2.2 Location Study area is located in the southern drought prone zone of Ahmednagar district.
