It includes data tables containing the number of casualties among American military personnel who served in principal wars and combat operations from 1775 to the present. The tables are compiled from various Department of Defense (DOD) sources. That means, that if the casualties from WWI were applied to the United States today, one in every nine people would be dead or wounded. Atomic Bomb I INTRODUCTION Atomic Bomb, extremely powerful explosive weapon whose force is fuelled by the splitting, or fission, of the nuclei of specific isotopes of uranium or plutonium (uranium-235, uranium- 238, and plutonium-239) in a chain reaction. The process of fission releases enormous energy in the form of extreme heat and a massive shock wave. A slow, carefully controlled fission reaction generates power for electricity companies worldwide, but in an atomic bomb the release of energy continues unabated until all fissile material is exhausted. In addition to its virtually limitless destructive effects —flash burns, and widespread destruction through pressure waves, and high winds—a nuclear explosion also produces deadly radiation in the form of gamma rays and neutrons, which destroy living matter and contaminate soil and water. II FISSION AND FUSION Atomic bombs are nowadays called nuclear weapons, which are of two general types: fission or fusion. Fission weapons were the first atomic bombs to be developed, tested, and used in war, when the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in 1945, at the end of World War II. Fusion bombs, also called hydrogen or thermonuclear bombs, are vastly more powerful than fission bombs. They were developed and tested in the early 1950s, but these have never been used in warfare. A thermonuclear device depends on a fission reaction to produce extreme heat that causes hydrogen isotopes of deuterium and tritium to come together, or fuse. This process yields energy many times greater than that of fission-type devices. Most nuclear weapons in present-day stockpiles are thermonuclear devices. -

Reese and Seth C. Lewis University of Texas, USA ABSTRACT The War on Terror was the label assigned by the Bush administration to its national security policy, launched in response to the attacks of 9/11. The cultural construction and political rationale supporting this slogan represent a powerful organizing prin- ciple that has become a widely accepted framing, laying the groundwork for the invasion of Iraq. We examine this framing where its sponsors intersect with US jour- nalism, as illustrated by news texts. Broadly, we examine trends in how news reports refer to the War on Terror and provide an interpretive analysis of stories in USA Today. From the period of September 2001 to early 2006, these news texts suggest that the frame was internalized by the US press. News and editorial reports went beyond ‘transmitting’ the label as shorthand for administration policy, to ‘reify’ the policy as uncontested, and ‘naturalize’ it as a taken-for-granted common-sense notion. The Battle of the Bulge Loomed Large 70 Winters Ago Men of the 83rd Division move toward the front in the Houffalize sector, Belgium, January 15, 1945. he Germans called it the T“Operation Watch on the Rhine.” The French named it the “Battle of the Ardennes.” And the Western Allies termed it the “Ardennes Counteroffensive.” But because of the way the map of Western Europe looked at the height of the battle, it became known to his- tory as the “Battle of the Bulge.” It was the winter of 1944–1945, Above: German infantrymen run across a Belgian road strewn with Allied armor and months before the war in Europe artillery. Despite the protestations of his generals, Adolf Hitler decided on one final attempt to turn World War II in favor of his German Third Reich. For this, he ordered resources diverted from other bat- tle fronts—including his losing campaign against the Russians in the east. The Allies were caught off guard, as Hitler had hoped. Thousands of U.S. troops were surrounded at one point. In the end, the Allies committed enough troops that the tired, ill- equipped German army was overwhelmed. Indeed, the Battle of the Bulge was an important turning point in the war in the Allies’ favor, but it was not without its cost. The Battle of the Bulge is considered one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. -

Can the War on Terror Be Won? How to Fight the Right War Philip H. Gordon Less than 12 hours after the 9/11 attacks, George W. Bush pro- claimed the start of a global war on terror. Ever since, there has been a vigorous debate about how to win it. Bush and his supporters stress the need to go on the oªensive against terrorists, deploy U.S. military force, promote democracy in the Middle East, and give the commander in chief expansive wartime powers. His critics either challenge the very notion of a “war on terror” or focus on the need to fight it diªerently. Most leading Democrats accept the need to use force in some cases but argue that success will come through reestablishing the United States’ moral authority and ideological appeal, conducting more and smarter diplomacy,and intensifying cooperation with key allies.They argue that Bush’s approach to the war on terror has created more terrorists than it has eliminated—and that it will continue to do so unless the United States radically changes course. Almost entirely missing from this debate is a concept of what “victory” in the war on terror would actually look like. The traditional notion of winning a war is fairly clear: defeating an enemy on the battlefield and forcing it to accept political terms. But what does victory—or Philip H. Gordon is Senior Fellow for U.S. Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution. His latest book is Winning the Right War:The Path to Security for America and the World (Times Books, 2007), from which this essay is drawn. -

Time Life Pictures—The LIFE Picture Collection/Getty Images BY MELISSA CHAN SEPTEMBER 22, 2017 North Korea warned this week that it might test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean, after saying the country had already successfully detonated one. A hydrogen bomb has never been used in battle by any country, but experts say it has the power to wipe out entire cities and kill significantly more people than the already powerful atomic bomb, which the U.S. dropped in Japan during World War II, killing tens of thousands of people. As global tensions continue to rise over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, here’s what to know about atomic and hydrogen bombs: Why is a hydrogen bomb stronger than an atomic bomb? More than 200,000 people died in Japan after the U.S. dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima and then another one three days later in Nagasaki during World War II in 1945, according to the Associated Press. The bombings in the two cities were so devastating, they forced Japan to surrender. But a hydrogen bomb has the potential to be 1,000 times more powerful than an atomic bomb, according to several nuclear experts. The U.S. witnessed the magnitude of a hydrogen bomb when it tested one within the country in 1954, the New York Times reported.
