Membership Book Cork Constitution Football Club Founded 1892 Membership Book SEASON 2016-2017 ! 1890 400 150 ZURICH INSURANCE. FOR THOSE WHO TRULY LOVE. Zurich Insurance plc is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It is an honour and a privilege for me to have been elected President of Cork Constitution for the 2016/2017 Season, the 125th anniversary of the founding of our great club. Cork Constitution Football Club is a Rugby Club with a proud history and tradition which is a great source of pride to all involved. As part of our 125 year celebration we embarked on a pre season tour to Canada that included visits to St Johns in Newfoundland and also Montreal. The tour party comprised 24 players and 12 club officials and we had two games with some very promising young talent emerging who grasped the opportunity to lay down a marker for the season ahead. It was a highly successful tour and the players really enjoyed the experience and they were wonderful ambassadors for the club. Last season was a tremendous success both on and off the field culminating in our Senior Team winning the All-Ireland Bateman Cup and Munster Senior Cup Double and our Under 20’s winning the Munster Donal Walsh trophy and the Frazer McMullen. These fantastic achievements do not come without extreme hard work, sacrifice and determination from players and coaches alike which is a credit both to them and the club. We have set the standard for Youth and Juvenile rugby for many years and I would like to thank the unsung heroes, our coaches and trainers, for all the generous time and effort they put into developing our future players. The care and attention dedicated to teaching our Juveniles on a Saturday morning is a credit to parents and coaches alike, and the contribution our club makes to our local community is often overlooked. I offer sincere thanks to all of our sponsors and those who support us through advertising and other means, we are really grateful for without your help we would be unable to run our club. I believe that the more members put into the club, the gains on a social and a personal level are far greater and I would encourage all members to get involved. The club have reinvested significantly in developing the new Clubhouse and upgrading the pitches, with new floodlighting for all three pitches installed this year, this investment in our facilities can only continue with your help. I would like to wish all the Players, Coaches and Management of all teams from our Under Six Squad up to or our Senior Squad the very best in the coming season. I congratulate our Club Captain Niall Kenneally on his appointment, and wish him every success in the season ahead and look forward to working with him. We have pride in our reputation for being one of the friendliest clubs in Ireland. Cork Constitution has always been a family Club and I would like to extend a warm welcome to one and all who visit Templehill this season, be it on a match day or not. And I sincerely hope you have an enjoyable experience. Cork. ii AUTHORS NOTE & ACKNOWLEDGEMENT When the Cork Constitution Club celebrated the centenary of its foundation I had the privilege of writing the history. Now I have been entrusted with updating that chronicle. While obviously the emphasis will be on the events of the last twenty-five years - the most momentous period in the history of rugby union - as a tribute to the founding fathers, the first chapter of the original history will yet again appear. While it would not be practical to include a detailed history of the first 100 years chapter two is a brief resume of the achievements of the first fifty years and likewise chapter three embraces the significant events of the second fifty years in the illustrious history of one of Ireland’s great sporting institutions. There follows the detailed history and achievements, and they were considerable, of the last twenty five years. I owe a considerable debt of gratitude to many people for their help during the compilation of this book. In that regard I would particularly like to thank Noel Walsh, the man with whom I liaised during the writing of the book.

Zurich Insurance plc is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland. 2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Member, It is my honour to write to you as our Club embarks on the challenges of the 2017/18 Rugby Season. It was most appropriate that in our 125th Year the Club enjoyed the level of success achieved and, as always with Cork Constitution, we must strive to emulate the performances and campaigns of previous years, thus maintaining the traditions of our Club. Our Club Captain Niall Kenneally leads the senior squad for another year and they are really looking forward to the challenge before them with great enthusiasm. Our Juvenile and Youth Sections, the future of our Club, are also back in action and it is my pleasure to confirm that in the Spring of 2018, it is hoped that both our Under 13s and Under 18s will undertake trips overseas to France and Canada respectively. Much hard work is required in the planning and funding of these tours and I would encourage all members to assist where possible. A special word of thanks to our Sponsors who continue their vital financial support, all of which they have seen put to very good use. We very much appreciate their help and we are confident that, in like fashion, their association with Cork Constitution continues to be of benefit. Peter O’Mahony’s selection as Lions Test Captain last June brought a further most significant chapter in our Club’s history with Peter joining Tom Kiernan amongst a very select group of Con and Irish rugby players who have been chosen to lead a Lions Test team.

Con has a long and proud tradition of rugby in Cork, in Munster, in Ireland and across the rugby playing world. The club has provided some exceptional individuals as players, coaches and administrators throughout the 125+ year history of CCFC. One of my main objectives for the year ahead, is to continue that tradition of aligning the club's considerable resources, to support all our players -- juveniles through youths, U20s and adults -- to achieve their full potential, both on and off the rugby field.
