RELEASE NUMBER 5 (Updated December 9, 2020) FOX (National) | KOA-RADIO | CUBUFFS.COM (Live Stats) BUFFALO BITS … The No. 21 (AP, CFP)/No. 22 (USAT/Coaches) Colorado Buffaloes (4-0, 3- league play for the first time in the Pac-12 and for just the fifth time in the 0 Pac-12), bowl eligible for the first time since the 2016 season, return home last 30 seasons, the first since opening 4-0 in Big 12 play in 2002 (7-0 in ’96, now for a Saturday morning affair against the Utah Utes (1-2, 1-2 Pac-12) 3-0 in ’91 and ’94 in the Big 8) and have won three Pac-12 games for just the in a 10:05 a.m. MST game at Folsom Field ... The Buffaloes are 4-0 for just the second time since CUBuffs.com/media is all things Buff (on-line media guide, live stats, etc.). opening 5-0 in 1998 (the Buffs were also 5-0 in 2018); the Buffs are 3-0 in DEPTH CHART ON PAGE 62; ROSTER PAGES 63-65; STAT PAGES 67-75 TV | CU-Utah Gus Johnson (play-by-play) / Joel Klatt (color) / Jenny Taft (sideline reporter) / Chuck McDonald (producer) CU & THE PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME Colorado can qualify to play in the Pac-12 Championship game in a single scenario: the Buffaloes must beat Utah and USC has to lose to UCLA. That would give CU a 4-0 record in Pac-12 games while USC would be 4-1; if CU wins and USC wins and gets to 5-0 (and ditto if both lose and wind up with one loss), the Trojans will be declared the South Division champion and would host the title game on Dec. 18 (CU would host if it wins the division, as the North will not have an undefeated team.) CU has had two scheduled games canceled due to COVID-19 issues in opponent programs, Arizona State in Boulder and at USC (but was able to replace USC with a non-league affair with San Diego State). USC’s only canceled game was its Nov. 28 home game with the Buffaloes. STAT(S) OF THE WEEK Feast-and/or-Famine. In CU’s 24-13 win at Arizona, big plays ruled the roost: he teams combined 12 plays of 20-plus yards that racked up 522 yards (CU 6 for 320, UA 6 for 202); the other 129 netted 399. Then add in 14 others in double-digits (CU 6-77, UA 8-118), the numbers change to 26 for 717 and 115 for 204. Do the math: those 26 plays averaged 27.6 yards per, the other 115, only 1.8. Passes? We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Passes! Against the Wildcats, CU had three touchdown drives totaling 17 plays that covered 253 yards. The Buffs ran the ball 15 times for 241 yards on those possessions, completing 1-of-2 throws for 12 yards. Then add in the field goal drive that featured eight plays, all runs, that ate up 94 yards, the plays on the scoring drives added to 25 for 347 yards (23 rushes, two passes). OBSCURE NOTE OF THE WEEK Dorrell Doing Well. How well? He has led the Buffs to a 4-0 start (3-0 in league play), and with CU entering the polls for the first time at No. 21 (AP; No. 22 USAT/Coaches), leading a team that many prognosticators were saying would win maybe one if any games (the over/under in Vegas was 1½ wins). He has become the first first-year head coach to take over the Colorado program starting the year unranked and coaching the team into the national polls. Only two of the other 22 new head coaches in 2020 did the same: Shawn Clark (Appalachian State) and Jimmy Lake (Washington); each entered the AP poll for one week.
