As I outlined in my piece last month, each Vice President: Hermann Scheidler 0403 255 909 instrument has its role in the ensemble and much of what is played is spontaneous in response to what is happening at Secretary: Mike Lowe 0424 291 770 the time musically. Treasurer: Keith Terry 0419 965 891 When good musicians who are compatible stylistically and familiar with each other’s musical predilections get together to Assistant Treasurer: Graham Jamison 0411 185 361 play, the result can be a beautiful thing which could not be produced by any of them alone. The whole is greater than the Membership Officer: Angela Fairbairn 0419 246 316 sum of the parts as the saying goes. This was jazz for about the first ten years until the magic of Band Coordinator Hermann Scheidler 0403 055 909 Louis Armstrong started the trend towards the individual solo becoming more important. Louis was such a prodigious and Raffle Coordinator Beth Forbes 9447 9714 powerful soloist that bands started to become more a showcase for his improvisational flights than relying on the Committee Members: Tony Moore 0414 352 067 power of group improvisation. Vacant x2 By the time the 1930s swing era came along the cult of the soloist was well established and people like Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Bunny Berrigan and Harry James became superstars who bands were built around. Of Louis Armstrong remained a superstar until his death. Caterina’s chatter continued from previous page However, for me, there’s nothing more thrilling than hearing, going. Club members, the majority being seniors and or playing in, a great traditional band in full cry, everyone because it has been asked many times, the Committee have playing together with empathy. The energy and feeling discussed in depth and decided that we must at least try it. produced says something about the human spirit which we all share. Maybe it’s the ultimate example of democracy? Long Getting home at 11 pm or later is a deterrent for some not may it live! to come to their loved jazz. We are doing our best, keep those suggestions coming, don’t be shy. OUR MONTH OF OCTOBER BANDS Page 3 OCTOBER 5 HILLS BIG BAND The HILLS BIG BAND a community based non-for-profit big swing jazz band playing a popular variety of well known tunes both old and new , including two vocalists. Formed in 2002 we have performed at many community events across the Perth area nd the Ellington and Fremantle Jazz clubs. Nothing beats the sound of a big band in full flight. OCTOBER 12 KENT STREET RIVERSIDE STOMPERS The Kent St Riverside Stompers were actually formed to play the music of the 1920’s . This was an era of celebration after the dreadful times of the First World War. It is the only era where some bands used the bass saxophone which pushes the band along with the happy music of the Charleston era. The band has the usual lineup - Barry Bruce on piano, Martin Jones on bass saxophone, John Lee on banjo, Peter Groos on reeds and Herman on trombone, Steve Searle on trumpet, but we have changed our drummer. We needed someone who can handle all the Roaring Twenties songs and who better than Bob Appleyard who has so much experience of cabaret singing. So girls get out your boas and beads, and guys “shine your shoes and slick your hair and get yourself a boutoniere” and all be prepared to try a Charleston. We look forward to entertaining you for a fun evening. OCTOBER 19 THAT’S JAZZ “This Band was born in Mandurah as a Trio (John Twycross, Harry Horne and Don Slaughter) in late 2003. This was increased to 7 piece and the Mandurah Jazz Club commenced on 28th March 2004. We’ve now performed 181 Jazz Club gigs in such venues as the Atrium Basement and then Ballroom, Silver Sands Hotel, Mandurah R.S.L., Bowling Club, Leslie Street Hall and the Bridgewater Lifestyle Village Auditorium. On quite a few occasions we have even been known to have ventured as far afield as Downtown Yokine, where we have all enjoyed playing at the renowned Jazz Club of W.A. Our present group consists of: Trumpet: Rob Watt, Reeds: Martin Jones, Trombone: Bob Benton, Vocals: Bob Appleyard, Bass: Elph Hensler, Drums: Mark Hastings and Piano: Don Slaughter OCTOBER 26 POWERHOUSE JAZZ BAND The popular Powerhouse Jazz Band was formed in Perth in early 1997 with the commitment to perform a variety of popular jazz styles, but playing mainly dixieland, swing and some latin.
