EDITORIAL September 1984 .Vol.3.no.6 By the time these words appear the year 1984 will be three parts gone, and most of the musical events which took so long to plan will be pleasant memories. In the Autumn months there are still concerts and lectures to attend, but it must be admitted there is a sense of ‘winding down’. However, the joint meeting with the Delius Society in October is something to be welcomed, and we hope it may be the beginning of an association with other musical societies. -

Elgar and Me : North West Branch Donald Hunt & Tom Hunt, Saturday, 7 October 2017 Newsletter ”Elgar has been for me an inspiration, a pleasure and a comfort in difficult times.” That was the August 2018 summing up of a distinguished life in music by Donald Hunt, choir master, organist, festival organiser, conductor and Leeds United supporter, who held an audience of members with his fascinating reminiscences and his choice of music. Donald is a favourite of the North West Branch. Inspiration was a word that occurred more than once in Donald’s presentation, chiefly This is now the fourth year in which I have produced a branch newsletter which provides with reference to Herbert Sumsion, organist of Gloucester Cathedral and a personal friend of a retrospective look at our activities throughout the season which has now ended. I wish to Elgar. Worcester and the Three Choirs Festival – a 300-year journey, and counting… The first known Worcester festival was in 1719. The latest should have been this month. The 1719 festival most likely consisted of two days of music with the cathedral choirs singing in the cathedral with a small orchestra in the mornings and in secular concerts in the evenings with the music of Purcell much to the fore. This year should have seen a Gabriel Jackson premiere, The World Imagined, his first oratorio for full symphonic forces, and also one by Jonathan Dove, Gaspard's Foxtrot, an event specially designed for families. There was also to be a new anthem for the combined cathedral choirs by John Rutter, which would have been broadcast, and other premieres by Roddy Williams, James Francis Brown and Dan Howard. Let's hope most appear in 2021! Key Worcester dates: 1719. The first newspaper report, so far traced, referring directly to the Music Meetings of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester. It appeared in the Worcester Postman newspaper of August 1719 and makes it clear that there had been several similar musical assemblies before this time. 1788. Visit to Worcester Meeting by King George III and other members of the Royal family and their retinue. While in Cheltenham on a visit for his health, the King had learned that the Triennial Festival was to be held in Worcester during the last week of August. Not being able to make those dates he requested that the Festival be moved to a more convenient time earlier in the month. -

MISSION STATEMENTS OF THE MUSIC PROGRAM The MUSIC PROGRAM at Christ Church Cambridge is about community, outreach, education and pastoral care; but most of all, it is about worship of the Almighty. Liturgical music embraces the arts to lift the senses and to illuminate the themes of the Lectionary through Scripture and poetry rendered to enhance meaning and to help embed them in our memory. It encourages, and nurtures, a community that listens responsively, increasing active participation through emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual engagement. In addition to continual congregational participation, the Music Program at Christ Church consists of the Youth Choir, the Adult Choir, the Evensong Choir, the Handbell Choir, the Music Committee, and the Evensong Choir Tour Committee. In all, more than 100 volunteers serve in this regular capacity. The Concert Series is intended both as a community bond and as a channel for reaching people who may not have visited Christ Church previously. Music in worship is an integral part of prayer, a way of expressing thanks or lamentation, asking forgiveness; it is a source of familiarity and enjoyment, a participatory, accessible means of reaching people at a basic spiritual level transcending language. It is an ideal tool for all people to praise God. “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord: and to sing praises unto thy Name, O most Highest.” — Psalm 92:1 MUSIC COMMITTEE The Music Committee advises the Director of Music on policies regarding music at Christ Church. In addition to acting as extra eyes and ears for what works, and does not work so well, on a regular basis, the committee members also help with periodic tasks such as distributing publicity and recruitment materials, organizing the Concert Series, and gathering collective opinions from the congregation. -

True Artist and True Friend." There is one other name that we must esteem as high as Richter's in connection with Elgar, and that is Landon Ronald. Mr. Ronald is probably that greatest exponent of Elgar that has ever lived, up to the present. His work to make Elgar known has been even more untiring that Richter's. His efforts throughout Great Britain have been so per- sistent that his name has become almost a synonym of Elgar. His most striking achievements include the securing of appreciation of Sunday afternoon audiences at Albert Hall for the symphonies, each of which takes up best part of an hour to play, and his hard fight against an apathetic public to rescue the E flat Symphony from oblivion, culminating in the work being described as one of the finest symphonies since Beethoven's day. He has performed the first symphony in Rome and Paris, and given an orchestral concert devoted entirely to Elgar's works at Queen's Hall, London. The interpretations by Landon Ronald of Elgar are remarkable for their insight and wealth of ex- pression, and are generally accepted to be the most authoritative. The full extent of the famous con- ductor's work to make the British public understand the genius in their midst, we are expressly forbidden to mention, but should the facts ever come to light, His Career *3 the world will see yet another example of the self- sacrificing love of true genius for fellow genius. -

Organist of Gloucester Cathedral, 1896 – 1928)
An evaluation of the teaching career of Sir Herbert Brewer (Organist of Gloucester Cathedral, 1896 – 1928) with particular reference to his articled pupils Simon Carpenter A thesis submitted to the University of Gloucestershire in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts by Research in the School of Liberal and Performing Arts July 2018 This dissertation is dedicated to three people who between them have inspired me and helped bring it into being: Firstly to the memory of my mother, Janet Carpenter, who hearing me sing myself to sleep every night, and with a mother’s blind belief in the inherent intelligence of her child, was inspired to enter me in for a scholarship audition for Guildford Cathedral Choir. When successful I was therefore admitted into the world of cathedral and choral music, and into what soon became one of my life’s passions. Secondly, to Barry Rose, the inspirational director of music at Guildford Cathedral during my time there. He introduced me to the music of Howells, Brewer and Sumsion and so many others, and his dedication, passion and hard work inspired me so much then, and have had such a positive influence on my subsequent life. Thirdly to Adrian Partington, the current director of music at Gloucester Cathedral and conductor of my present choir, Gloucester Choral Society for his consistent and enthusiastic interest, support and encouragement for this research.
