Library Theme 2015 is to “Focus on Folklore” Cavan Football Legend Mick Higgins Mick Higgins was born in New York on 22nd August 1922. He returned to his mother's native town of Kilnaleck in Cavan when he was five years old and went on to play for the club before moving to Mountnugent, with whom he won a Cavan senior football club medal in 1946. His first All-Ireland Senior Football medal came as a member of the team that won the All-Ireland Football Championship final against Kerry played at the Polo Grounds in New York in 1947. Higgins recalled in later life: "There was no huge send-off for us in Cavan, but both teams got a good reception in New York when we arrived. I remember the team stayed in the Commodore Hotel, but I stayed with my relatives." He also remembered there was "oppressive heat" during the game itself. Cavan retained that title the following year and won it again in 1952 when Higgins was captain of the team. Mick Higgins surrounded by his team mates holds aloft the Sam Maguire Cup on the Hogan Stand, Croke Park October 18th 1952 Higgins also won the Ulster Senior Football Championship with Cavan, as well as both the National Football League and Railway Cup on two occasions each. He played with famous players such as Tony Tighe, Peter Donohue Bellamnt Estate and Connie Kelly. Rent Book Upon his death in 2010 Higgins was said by the Irish Independent’s Martin Breheny to have been "widely regarded as one of the greatest talents ever to emerge from Cavan". The Longford Leader’s Eugene McGee described him as "a man who became a GAA superstar of his generation, despite limited coverage of games he played". Seán Moran of The Irish Times described him as "one of the great football figures of the last century". When asked what he would like to be remembered for, Higgins replied: "That I never hit anyone, I played the game clean and I never was put off". A member of an Garda Siochana, Mick Higgins was married to Margaret & had one son and three daughters. He died on 28th January 2010 aged 87. • Tuarascail Bhliantúil 2009 the Year of Celebration for Our One Hundred
Tuarascail Bhliantúil 2009 The year of celebration for our one hundred and twenty five years of commitment and service to our Country, has been widely acclaimed and supported with many outstanding events and occasions, to ensure that the input of many great people over this period of time who dedicated to the development of the Gaelic Athletic Association were recognised. History is important and we must always be aware of where we have come from. It can be motivating and enlightening to the current times. Today is about knowing where we are now based on what has gone before. We need both these elements to inspire us to build for the future. We have strategies in place to guide us towards our goal but strategies alone cannot be the driving force for a vibrant tomorrow. The things that motivate members, Clubs, Counties, Provinces and an expanding Association is that idealism of extended community pride based on the core values of the GAA. These are what will take us to our future. The world of today is vastly different from our founding times and the intervening period has thrown up many varied challenges to the GAA. We have been and must remain relevant to the times that we are in, based on the essential commitment to our aims and ideals. We have changed in so many ways during the past one and a quarter Centuries that our Founders would have hardly imagined how we would have developed even with the best vision of Dr. Croke. The Association has democratically remained true to our core values, despite the variable of the difficulty of the times, and this is important when we envisage our future.

It is also hoped to Foreword give an insight to those new to the Sigerson Cup of what the competition means to those people who have been fortunate enough to wear the UCD jersey over the years. It is not intended to be a complete history of our participation, but rather a snapshot through the ages. The UCD GAA webpage will carry an archive of the history for those who wish to delve deeper: See www.ucd.ie/gaa. ‘Bliss was it that dawn to be alive This publication would not have being possible without the kind financial patronage of Dalkia Ireland and its managing director Patrick Gilroy But to be young was very heaven.’ (a Trinity graduate!), and of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Council.
