100 WOMEN IN HEDGE FUNDS Building with Books was founded in 1991 with a mission to enhance education and empower youth in the U.S. to make a positive difference in their communities while helping people in developing countries increase their self-reliance through education. Building with Books operates within and beyond the classroom, engaging primarily urban youth through global education presentations offered within 5th Anniversary Gala and Benefit social studies classes and through after-school programs where students contribute intensive community service. Our programs are established in schools in New York, Connecticut, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California. Teach For America’s mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting our nation’s most promising future leaders in the effort. We do this by building a corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors and career interests who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in ensuring educational equity and excellence for all children. Since its inception in 1989, nearly 17,000 individuals have been placed as teachers in urban and rural communities across the country. Currently, there are nearly 4,400 corps members teaching in classrooms in 25 regions from New York City to Los Angeles, and from the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Corps members work relentlessly to close the academic achievement gap for their students. At the same time, more than 12,000 Teach For America alumni work for change from every professional sector, exerting leadership in education and social reform as teachers, principals, school board members, district leaders, policy makers, journalists, public health advocates, and pioneers in education reform initiatives.
