There are around 283 species of hoverfly found in the British Isles, and 176 of these have been recorded in Birmingham and the Black Country. This atlas contains tetrad maps of all of the species recorded in our area based on records held on the EcoRecord database. The records cover the period up to the end of 2019. They truly can be considered the gardener’s fiend as not only are they important pollinators but the larva of many species also help to control aphids! Great places to spot hoverflies are in flowery meadows on flowers such as knapweed, buttercup, hogweed or yarrow or in gardens on plants such as Canadian goldenrod, hebe or buddleia. Quite a few species are instantly recognisable while the appearance of some other species might make you doubt that it is even a hoverfly… Mimicry Many hoverfly species are excellent mimics of bees and wasps, imitating not only their colouring, but also often their shape and behaviour. Sometimes they do this to fool the bees and wasps so they can enter their nests to lay their eggs. Most species however are probably trying to fool potential predators into thinking that they are a hazardous species with a sting or foul taste, even though they are in fact harmless and perfectly edible. -

Stubbs & Falk (1983) report an observation of a female ovipositing in a water filled hoofprint in a shaded muddy path beside a stream. Found near springs, wet flushes or streams, usually near the edge of woodland or carr. Adults visit purple flowers, especially Succisa, white umbels and yellow composites Distribution: A northern and western species which is locally abundant in suitable localities, these tending to be sheltered, and on neutral to acid soils. Local in North Devon/Cornwall First recorded on reserve in September 2008. July-October peak August Baccha elongata Biology: This species is found in shady places such as woodland rides and edges, hedgerows and mature gardens, where adults may be seen hovering low amongst ground-layer plants. The larvae are aphidophagous, preying on a variety of ground-layer species in shaded situations, e.g. Uromelan jaceae on Centaurea scabiosa, Brachycaudina napelli on Aconitum, and the bramble aphid, Sitobion fragariae onRubus. It overwinters as a larva Distribution: Widely recorded throughout Britain, but like most woodland species, scarce or absent from poorly-wooded areas such as the East Anglian fens and the Scottish islands. There is considerable uncertainty about the status of B. obscuripennis which has often been regarded as a distinct species. Most records submitted to the scheme are attributed to “ Baccha spp.”, but analysis of those where separation has been attempted do not suggest any differences in range, flight period or habitat preference Brachypalpoides lenta ( Xylota lenta ) Biology: The larvae of this species occur in decaying heartwood of beech, particularly in live trees with exposed decay at ground level. -

Dipterists Forum Hoverfly Newsletter Number 59 Autumn 2015 ISSN 1358-5029 As the opening article explains, the rapid sales of the first edition of the WildGuide and the popularity of the Hoverfly Facebook page are indicators of an increase in the population's awareness of and interest in hoverflies. Perhaps as a result of this a hoverfly, Episyrphus balteatus, has been selected by the Royal Society of Biology as one of a list of ten species to be voted for in a poll to find Britain's favourite insect. I am sure most readers will be delighted that a hoverfly features in such a short list, even if they do not all agree on the actual choice of hoverfly species, and many will have other preferred candidates. The species that immediately comes to my mind is the elegant Scaeva pyrastri, or perhaps, for its sheer charisma, Volucella zonaria (but perhaps that one should be disqualified as not being a native species since it was not regularly seen in Britain until the 1940s). However on balance Episyrphus balteatus was probably the best choice as it is easily recognised and in most summers (including this one) it is the hoverfly most conspicuously present. Readers receiving this newsletter with the Dipterists Forum bulletin are welcome to ask me to send it to them as a PDF which will enable them to see any illustrations in colour. Inspiring change for Important Invertebrate Areas in the UK Invertebrate Survey of the A30 and A38 road verges in Area 1 (Cornwall and Devon) 11th September 2014 Susan Thompson - Grants & Trusts Officer Steven Falk Mark Tunmore Saving the small things that run the planet October 2015 1 Executive summary Between late May and late August 2015, Buglife Services carried out an invertebrate survey of the A30 and A38 in Devon and Cornwall. 41 visits to 23 sample points were undertaken on the A30 and 25 visits to 18 sampling points were undertaken on the A38, and a range of invertebrate groups were targeted. 866 taxa were recorded, the list being dominated by flies (361), beetles (177), butterflies & moths (109), bugs (82), bees, ants & aculeate wasps (53), spiders & harvestmen (50), grasshoppers & crickets (11) and dragonflies & damselflies (11). Pitfall trapping (not permitted) would have extended the beetle and bug lists greatly. The list included a number of rare and scarce species (notably the tachinid fly Policheta unicolor and lygaeid bug Trapezonotus ullrichi) and seemingly the first SW England record for the Southern oak bush-cricket (Meconema meridionalis) which is a recent British colonist. The richest sites were 24, 30 and 7b; sites 24 and 30 produced the best fly lists; sites 7 and 33 produced the best butterfly lists, site 22 produced the best bee lists and site 7b produced the best dragonfly list. The list reveals the tremendous variety of life cycle strategies and other ecological relationships associated with road verge invertebrates. Pollinators are very well represented within the species list. -

Forel for environmental and aquatic sciences, University of Geneva, Switzerland 5Institute Earth-Nature-Environment, hepia, University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland, Geneva, Switzerland Abstract The association of hoverflies with vineyards and the response of the species to different types of ground cover management were investigated in two Swiss vineyards sampled using Malaise and emergence traps from March to July 2014. Eight of the 21 species collected in emergence traps, some of them with conservation interest, were identified as having a high association with vine- yards. The most diverse fauna was found with ground cover of spontaneous, ruderal vegetation, which provided for, in particular, aphid-feeding species living in the grass-root zone. Plots in which there was no ground vegetation lacked these species. Sowing a grassy mixture of seeds, which resulted in a complete cover of ground vegetation, was not found to promote richness and abun- dance of hoverflies, and was interpreted as a “barrier” to development of syrphid biodiversity in vineyards. The various ground vegetation treatments studied were found to promote almost only polyvoltine aphidophagous species, except a few phytophagous species and univoltine species whose larvae live in the soil. -
TR23 J (Creteway Down, Holy Well and the Hope Farm Area)
Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR23 J (Creteway Down, Holy Well and the Hope Farm area) Most of the interest in this tetrad is provided by the section of the Folkestone Downs escarpment that runs along the southern edge. Creteway Down attracts good numbers of common migrants in season and scarcer species have included Long-eared Owl, Firecrest, Garden and Grasshopper Warblers, Spotted and Pied Flycatchers, Nightingale and Redstart, whilst it is a regular haunt for Ring Ouzel in autumn. The Downs provide a good vantage point for recording visual migration and more notable species have included Honey Buzzard, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, Merlin, Golden Plover, Ruff, Short-eared Owl and Hawfinch. The spring at Holy Well holds breeding Moorhen and wintering Water Rail, and occasionally Woodcock, whilst Firecrest, Nightingale and Black Redstart have also occurred. Looking west over Creteway Down The fields to the north of Crete Road East can produce Wheatear and Whinchat, particularly if left as stubble in autumn, and a Tawny Pipit was seen in September 1993. Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls can often be found in late summer/early autumn. The Hope Farm area was one of the last remaining haunts of Turtle Dove and Corn Buntings also formerly bred here. Looking north across the fields to Hope Farm Spotted Flycatcher at Creteway Down Pied Flycatcher at Creteway Down Waxwings have twice been noted in the tetrad – a flock of 12 by Encliffe Farm in January 2011 and a flock of about.20 by Coombe Farm in January 2013. Redstart at Creteway Down Ring Ouzel at Creteway Down Access and Parking There are several lay-bys along Crete Road East which enable access to Creteway Down and also along Crete Road West which enable access to Holy Well. -

They are usually thought to be rather opportunistic flower visitors, although previous studied demonstrated that they show colour pref- erences and their nectar feeding is affected by morphological constraints related to flower morphology. Despite the growing appreciation of hoverflies and other non-bee insects as pollinators, there is a lack of community-wide studies of flower visitation by syrphids. The aim of this paper is to provide a detailed analysis of flower visitation patterns in a species rich community of syrphids in a Central European grassland and to evaluate how species traits shape the structure of the plant-hoverfly flower visitation network. We found that different species varied in the level of specialisation, and while some species visited a similar spectre of flowers, others partitioned resources more strongly. There was a consistent difference in both specialisation and flower preferences between three syrphid subfamilies. Eristalinae and Pipizinae were more specialised than Syrphinae. Trait-based analyses showed that relative flower visitation (i) increased with plant height, but most strongly in Eristalinae; (ii) increased with inflorescence size in small species from all three subfamilies, but was independent of inflorescence size in large species of Eristalinae and Syrphinae; and (iii) depended on flower colour, but in a subfamily-specific way.
