What’s Happening Now - Face to Face Operations on Pause With the health and safety of our community paramount to our concerns, we are announcing a significant change to our previous service delivery platform. It is necessary for us to take additional precautions to minimize risk to everyone so all face to face operations have been paused. COVID- 19 has not changed the need for education and support-if anything it has expanded the need. Our team will continue to provide individuals and staff training and technical assistance to the maximum extent possible during the pandemic, while adjusting delivery methods to comply with state and local health/safety restrictions. Until further notice, HCQU RN staff will be facilitating instructor led virtual trainings in substitution for all face to face interactions. In addition, self-study packets and online education courses are available. We remain committed to providing services with the safety and welfare of our individuals and staff as a top priority. Contact the HCQU to discuss your training needs and how to schedule remote learning sessions. i Educational Online Courses Expand your educational knowledge with free health literate online courses on different healthcare related topics. Each completed course allows you to receive 0.5 hour of credit towards your annual human services training requirement. Presently the online course page is performing intermittent upgrade maintenance. This will occur over an extended period of time. Please frequent our webpage to see new and improved updates. Select courses may be temporarily unavailable. All listed courses are available in self-study format. Self-studying involves studying without direct supervision at your own pace. Any course can be delivered virtually by HCQU staff by request. If you have any questions specific to online courses, please contact Kristy Campbell at email [email protected]. For training requests or self-study packets, please contact your regional HCQU nurse. Online course directions: • Log on to: http://www.geisinger.org/hcqu. • Click on “Take an Online Course” located on the navigation bar on the left of the website. • Click on the link “listing of the available online courses.” Available courses are then listed. • Click on a desired course which takes you directly to that course. • Upon completion of the course, fill in your personal information. • Click on “Show My Certificate.” The certificate of completion is displayed on the screen which you may print. ii Preventable Deaths in Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities The HCQU remains committed to providing an increase in awareness and education surrounding health conditions most likely to result in death or health deterioration for persons with Intellectual and Developmental disabilities. In the past we have offered The Fatal 4 training focusing on aspiration, dehydration, constipation and seizures. These health issues, often unrecognized, are linked to serious illness and preventable deaths in community-based settings. Research has shown that there is a need to focus on an additional preventable health issue – INFECTION/SEPSIS. Sepsis is a medical emergency. To put it simply, sepsis is a term used to describe a serious illness characterized by a bacterial infection in the bloodstream. Sources of sepsis may be an infection of the kidney(s) or bladder and pneumonia. It is important to recognize the signs of these conditions and other infections and get them prompt treatment. Early intervention can prevent an individual from becoming septic. iii In 2021, The Fatal 4 training will transition to The Fatal 5 training with the addition of Infection/Sepsis. This revision will align with the Fatal 5 topics that the PA Office of Developmental Programs and HRST promote. This training is a lengthy overview highlighting all five medical conditions. As more individuals with IDD transition into community settings, caregivers play a vital role in the lives of the people they care for. Knowing how to prevent, recognize and seek treatment for select medical situations will not only improve the quality of their care, but will also save lives. Training and developing your staff to assist with recognizing and managing these fatal conditions is imperative. Contact the HCQU to schedule a virtual instructor led Fatal 5 training. Further in-depth training on each individual medical condition can also be provided through virtual and online instruction, and self-study packets. Promoting Skin Integrity Preventing Pressure Injuries The HCQU remains committed to making skin integrity and pressure injury prevention a priority. Education and awareness are the essential building blocks in promoting skin health for people of all ages and in the prevention and management of pressure injuries. Pressure injuries can be devastating causing not only pain and distress but can also be life-threatening. Our goal is for staff to have a clear understanding of the potential impact of a pressure injury and the importance of its prevention, contributing risk factors and strategies that assist in reducing the risk. Contact the HCQU to explore free educational opportunities on skin health and pressure injury prevention through virtual instructor lead trainings, online courses and self-study packets. Together we can make a difference one training at a time. iv The PA Dual Diagnosis Direct Support Curriculum is now Available Online The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) and The Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) have undertaken a joint initiative to address the needs of people who have an intellectual disability as well as mental health challenges. People who have both challenges are commonly referred to as those who have dual diagnosis. The goal of this training curriculum is to provide information that can aid in the understanding of the struggles and the triumphs of those you support or will support. This curriculum was designed to demonstrate the complexity of dual diagnoses and the factors that need to be considered to best support those with whom you come into contact. The PA Dual Diagnosis Direct Support Curriculum was also designed to demonstrate that all people in this world, regardless of their challenges, are much more alike than they are different.
