Fleabag and Self-Reflexivity: Breaking-The-Fourth-Wall of a Woman’S Inner World
FLEABAG AND SELF-REFLEXIVITY: BREAKING-THE-FOURTH-WALL OF A WOMAN’S INNER WORLD Luis Rocha Antunes1 ABSTRACT This essay analyzes and describes the use of self-reflexivity in the series Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge, 2016-2019), showing that the televised series makes use of breaking-the-fourth-wall to create an ongoing relationship between the main character and the viewer. By testing the series' application of self-reflexivity against Jean-Marc Limoges' five criteria of fictional engagement, the essay explains why breaking-the- fourth-wall in Fleabag is not a mere comical device but an entire diegetic layer that shapes the viewer's perception of the character and their engagement with the story. Finally, this study offers a description of the concept of a personal live audience as a way to explain the dramatic importance of breaking-the-fourth-wall in the series, namely, how it impacts Waller-Bridge's performance as an actress, and it empowers her character. The overarching goal of the essay is to demonstrate the originality self- reflexivity in Fleabag and how breaking-the-fourth-wall helps to perceive the inner world of a character with a dimensionality that would be difficult to achieve without the use of self-reflexivity. The importance of investigating TV series bases on the format’s large narrative space that enables the communication and repetition of ideas and messages and on the format’s popularity with audiences and, consequently, with broadcasters. Countless different influences shape the composition of TV series’ content and the inclusion of societally relevant messages. One potentially very important reason for incorporating specific messages and content elements in TV series is the extent to which decision-makers regard societal relevance as a success factor.

Men represent 68 percent of all behind-the-scenes nominations in 98 total catego- ries compared to women, who represent only 32 percent, a slight two percentage point increase from last year, the WMC research shows. This course critically analyzes the history and importance of various TV genres and shows in the U.S., England, and Scandinavia and view them as mirrors of society and culture. The course offers an introduction to television history in the USA and Europe. It presents the rise of television in its various organizational forms (e.g. BBC in 1936 and NBC in 1939), and looks at concrete television genres and programs, while analyzing them as sociological mirrors or portraits of the time in which they were made. Each class will concentrate on one period, theme or aspect of television history and/or analysis and will often include a related viewing of a concrete program. IN FOCUS: Youth Culture Introduction
IN FOCUS: Youth Culture Introduction by TIMOTHY SHARY and LOUISA STEIN, editors e set out on this In Focus section with the general intent of bringing together scholars working in contemporary youth media studies. This is our own background, as Louisa has written extensively on teen television shows and the youth fan cultures that surround them, and Tim has examined youth in Ameri- Wcan movies going back to early Hollywood.1 As we began considering established scholars in the fi eld to solicit for contributions, we soon found evidence of the increasing attention to youth concerns beyond traditional fi lm and television texts, as much recent scholarship has focused on children and young adults using and creating social media. This increased attention to youth digital cultures should not have been a surprise given the state of the academy and, more so, the preoccupations of young people today. The youth population is indeed spending less time watching TV and going to movies and more time doing something—anything—on the Internet. When they are watching fi lms and TV programs, they’re often consuming that media online and then transforming their media engagement into authorship in digital venues, creating fan art and fan fi ction, or off ering reviews and critiques through social media networks.
