Listening to God and the missio Dei By Murray Harold Olson B.Sc, B.Theol A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts University of Divinity Date 12 February, 2016 1 ABSTRACT The early church was a church of mission; incarnational mission. This changed when the church entered into the Christendom era and church membership grew by birth, rather than by conversion, so there was no need for mission. The decline of numbers attending church services in recent years forced the church to look at mission and a number of church-centred models have developed. But in recent years there has been an awareness that mission is not the mission of the church. It is the missio Dei, the mission of God. In this thesis I have outlined the evolution of the concept of the missio Dei and its importance to the church. I have also given some examples of the way that the missio Dei has been put into action and the importance of listening to God when you are involved in it. This listening to God involves listening, individually and as a church, to God using prayer and Scripture. It also involves listening to God in the lives of the people in our neighbourhoods. The investigation is important for two reasons: as well as training to become an Anglican minister, I lead a charity and a training programme which aims to ‘Demonstrate the Christian message in a relevant way and equip others to do likewise’ (The Light Project, 2011). As a consequence, it is of the utmost vocational significance. The second reason is more general: Christians all over the globe contend that the message and life of Jesus Christ is essentially good news. Consequently, it would seem strange, or even scandalous, that any good news should be communicated in a way which renders it ordinary, irrelevant or even bad. ‘Good news need to be understood as good news, otherwise it is no news, which is bad news.’ (Duffet 2009,121). Mission and evangelism are the church’s primary means of portraying this message to the world around it. There are several different lenses through which one can examine the question of what constitutes mission and evangelism. Bosch (1991) discusses the variety of understandings and Barret has listed over 79 definitions (Barret 1987 in Bosch 1991,409). -

Torrance’s Trinitarian Theology and the Gospel Within Western Culture The Missio Dei and the Doctrine of God In our introduction we noted the recent appearance of a number of argu- ments for the fundamental importance of the category of mission within the discipline of systematic theology. These attempts are often gathered under a single descriptive heading: missio Dei. This term and the conceptual framework attached to it, often (apparently erroneously) traced back to Karl Barth,1 describes the fundamental conviction that unites all these recent projects. In Transforming Mission, a foundational text for both strands of biblical and theological reflection upon mission, David Bosch describes the conviction in this way: “Mission was understood as being derived from the very nature of God. It was thus put in the context of the doctrine of the Trinity, not of ecclesiology or soteriology. As far as missionary thinking was concerned, this linking with the doctrine of the Trinity constituted an important innovation.”2 1See John G. Flett’s helpful historical study of the term missio Dei in chapters three and four of his The Witness of God: The Trinity,Missio Dei, Karl Barth, and the Nature of Christian Community (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 2010). Flett argues that while Barth is an important contributor to the church’s reflection on its mission, the specific term missio Dei was neither used nor defined by Barth. -

Declining membership raised concerns around attracting new members. Using a Grounded Theory approach the researcher interviewed individuals from three numerically growing Anglican Church of Canada parishes. The purpose of the interviews was to determine their understandings of parish identity, evangelism, membership and belonging. Analysis of the recorded and transcribed responses from the Rector, one long term member and two newcomers included identification of key words, repeated phrases and common themes. -

MISSION MOVEMENT OF THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY IN MAINLAND CHINA: THE BACK TO JERUSALEM MOVEMENT (DRAFT) Kim-kwong Chan ([email protected]) I. Introduction Christianity first appeared in China in the 7th Century through the efforts of Nestorian missionaries from Central Asia, followed by Catholic Missionaries. The Protestant branch of Christianity arrived in China in the early 19th Century along with the colonial expansion of Western countries in Asia.1 The Christians or Christian community in China (hereafter in this paper referred to the Protestant Community in China) grew from a humble beginning of just a handful of converts in the early 1850s, to almost a million in 1949 after a century of labor by tens of thousands of missionaries sent from the West. These almost million Chinese Christians were an insignificant group in the midst of a Chinese population of 450 million at the time when the People’s Republic of China was formed in October 1949. The majority of Christian-operated social institutions, such as schools and hospitals, still heavily relied on financial support from Western mission board and agencies. The Christian community in China, like all other religious groups, went through harsh periods of political suppression under the Communist Regime of the People’s Republic and eventually ceased to exist in public. It was not until 1979 when the Chinese Government began to allow sanctioned religions to operate in the open, albeit with many restrictions, that Christian activities began to reappear. Since then Christians in China2 recorded a phenomenal growth, from a mere 3 million in 19823, estimated by the Government, to anywhere between 18 million4 to 80 million5 to the extremely high figure of 130 million.6 A reliable working figure is 35 to 40 million, including both the registered and unregistered Christian groups.7 The estimate of 35 to 40 million Protestants may err on the conservative side.
