The Cedar River
Since the 1800’s, Iowa rivers have been designated as CEDARCEDAR either meandered or non- RIVERRIVER meandered. Much of the Cedar River Water Trail is lined with public lands and classified as meandered, meaning that BLACK HAWK COUNTY paddlers may access not only BLACK HAWK the river itself but also the COUNTY river bottom and banks along its course. However, north of Washington Park, the river is classified as non-meandered, meaning that the river bed and surrounding land are owned by the adjacent landowners and paddlers should respect their property rights. Background, Rationale and Outputs/Results Expected: According to Richard Haggerty’s country study on Haiti from 1989, in 1925, 60% of Haiti’s original forests covered the country. Since then, the population has cut down all but an estimated 2% of its original forest cover. The fact that many of Haiti’s hillsides have been deforested has caused several flooding problems for cities and other communities located in critical watershed and flood-plain areas during recent hurricane seasons. The 2008 hurricane season was particularly devastating for Haiti, where over 800 people were killed by four consecutive tropical storms or hurricanes (Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike) which also destroyed infrastructure and caused severe crop losses. In 2004, tropical storm Jeanne killed an estimated 3,000 people, most in Gonaives. -

Truong3 1 Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Quang Ngai, Vietnam 2Kellog Brown Roots, Quang Ngai Natural Disaster Mitigation Project [email protected] 3 TVN Director and East Asia and South Pacific Representative, 23 Kimba St, Chapel Hill, Brisbane 4069, Australia [email protected] Abstract Quang Ngai, a coastal province in central Vietnam, is prone to flash flood caused by high annual rainfall, with 70% (2300mm/yr) falling over three months and steep terrain resulting in high velocity water flows. This often leads to flash floods in mountainous areas and large scale flooding in low-lying areas. The high velocity flows and flooding cause severe erosion on dike, canal and river banks built to protect farm land from flooding in the rain season and sea water intrusion in the dry season. Therefore the stability of these measures provides the local community a protection against flash flood and sea water intrusion at the same time. Both vegetative measures and hard structures such as rock and concrete have been used in the past to protect these banks, but they are ineffective partly due to the local sandy soils used to build them and partly to the strong current. Although vetiver grass has been used very successfully for flood erosion control in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, where flow velocity is relatively slow, it has not been used under very strong current. As a last resort, vetiver grass was tested for its effectiveness in protecting the banks of these rivers and canals. -

SOLICITOR’S SEARCHES This note sets out useful background information regarding the nature of enquiries with which Canal & River Trust can assist, the fees that are payable in respect of such enquires and other general information that may be of assistance to you. The Trust cares for a 2,000 mile network of canals and rivers. Most of the Trust’s structures are well over 200 years old and the canals themselves are constructed in a variety of ways. Some are natural rivers which are not owned by the Trust but where we are the navigation authority. The Trust also manages a significant portfolio of property that includes operational boat yards, docks, historic warehouses, cottages, marinas, industrial estates and development land across England and Wales. Every precaution must be taken to avoid the risk of removing Trust’s right of support, breaching the waterway damaging any of the waterway structure, as this may result in extensive flooding, with damage to buildings, property, services and possible loss of life. Embankments and other waterway structures are particularly vulnerable and no excavation, landscaping, or any other work or activity should take place near to, or at the foot of an embankment or waterway structure without consulting the Trust, even though such works may not be on Trust’s property. Except where they are expressly reserved for the benefit of the property, rights such as mooring, fishing, discharges to, or abstraction from, the waterway, and any encroachment upon or projection over the waterway require the written consent of the Trust and in some circumstances, that of the other organisations such as the Environment Agency. -

Field survey and laboratory 11 experimental studies have been carried out to investigate the morphodynamic features 12 in individual confluences, but few have investigated the evolution process of 13 confluences in large braided rivers. In the current study a physics-based numerical 14 model was applied to simulate a large lowland braided river dominated by suspended 15 sediment transport, and analyzed the morphologic changes at confluences and their 16 controlling factors. It was found that the confluences in large braided rivers exhibit 17 some dynamic processes and geometric characteristics that are similar to those observed 18 in individual confluences arising from two tributaries. ADA HISTORY Flood - May-June 1998 Event Summary: Two weeks of rain fell on a melting melting snowpack, causing flooding along the Snake, Weiser, Payette and Boise River drainages for the second year in a row. A levee break near Eagle Island caused flooding of nearby homes. County Summary: Increased flows in the Boise River due to snowmelt and reservoir discharge caused flooding along the Greenbelt. Two sections of the Greenbelt were closed, from Leadville to the old theatre, and between River Run and Powerline Corridor. Homes in subdivisions along the river flooded, such as at River Run and Wood Duck Island. Barber Park was closed and softball games at Willow Lane Athletic Complex were cancelled. Two large trees that fell into the Boise River caused a breach in the levee at the head of Eagle Island. 60 residents were evacuated, and the Riviera Mobile Home Park and nearby homes and farmlands were flooded with a foot of water. The Idaho Statesman, May 15, 17, 28, June 2, 4, 1998 Flood - September 11, 1997 Event Summary: $57,000.00 - Flash flooding from thunderstorms caused damage in the Boise Foothills and around Pocatello County Summary: $57,000.00 - Cloudburst dropped .40" of rain in nine minutes on the Foothills area burned by the 1996 Eighth Street Fire, flooding homes, Highlands Elementary School, and streets in the Crane Creek and Hulls Gulch areas. Floodwaters were contained in several holding ponds. 15 people were evacuated and sheltered at Les Bois Junior High. The Idaho Statesman September 12 and 13, 1997, January 25, 1998 Flood - March-July, 1997 Event Summary: $50,000,000.00 - Rapid melt of a record snowmelt led to flooded rivers throughout southern Idaho.
