(U-WIRE) BATON ROUGE, La. - Studies show sushi can become addictive because of the presence of MSG, a food enhancer that proposes many health risks. According to the organization NO MSG's web site, MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is used mainly in Asian cuisine to preserve and enhance the food, fooling your brain into thinking the food you are eating tastes good. It is a white, salt­ like substance, often sprinkled on food to keep it tasting fresh. Experts have found an addictive quality in MSG, so many people find them­ selves craving foods high in MSG after eating it for the first time. Since sushi restaurants have become a recent fad, many people are consuming more amounts of MSG than is healthy for their diet. Not only can MSG be addictive, research has shown links between MSG andAlzheimer's, Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases, autism and ADHD in children. MSG, which is made by the fermentation of starch, sugar cane or molasses, is a glutamate, and abnormal amounts of glutamate can damage nerve cells in the brain. MSG is found in alarming amounts in soy sauce, which is rarely absent in Chinese food or sushi. Some people may experience symptoms such as nausea, irregular heartbeat, vomiting or anxiety after eating food that contains a lot of MSG. Many blame Asian restaurants for misuse ofMSG, but many other large · food companies attempt to preserve and enhance their food with MSG. Kentucky Fried Chicken was said to exceed the legal limit for adding MSG to their chicken, according to www.msgtruth.org. In Baton Rouge, La., there are many options ofavoiding and substi­ tuting MSG. Randy Wong, manager of Ichiban Sushi Bar & Japanese Grill, said the restaurant uses hon­ dashi, or fish stock, as a substitute. Try ordering sushi without seaweed or soy sauce; instead of a sushi roll try sashimi. Crystal Bai, the assistant manager of The Great Wall restaurant said, "We have a diet menu where there is no MSG included." However, Bai said that they order their soy sauce from a large food company and they have no idea how much MSG it con­ tains. Even though sushi and other Asian food can be very healthy, if it contains MSG, your health might be in danger.
