  • Iamshocked Bertozzi Edits
“I Am Shocked, Shocked!”: Breaking taboos in digital gameplay Elena Bertozzi University of Wisconsin Whitewater [email protected] Abstract This paper examines some examples of what the media have described as outrageous, dangerous or otherwise troubling content in videogames. The author suggests that allowing players to engage in taboo behavior within games such as Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, and Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball actually reinforces pro-social cultural norms. All cultures establish norms and also provide occasional opportunities for transgression of these norms. The author argues that breaking the rules, and understanding that rules are being broken, is necessary to test and reinforce the boundaries of acceptable behavior. Games provide players with arenas within which such transgressions can take place safely. Current videogames, however, provide these transgressive opportunities primarily for white males. Author Keywords Computer games, video games, taboos, transgression, gender, race, deviance Introduction The 1999 film Fight Club depicts a world where men can separate themselves from the meaningless, feminized, sanitized world of Western civilization and beat each other bloody with their bare hands. Films in the horror genre routinely explore a gamut of violence, perversion, and extreme anti-social behavior. Although extremely violent and troubling films are common, the public’s response to video game content is quite different. Video games are blamed for inciting school shootings (Anderson, 2004), destroying the fabric of society, and permanently harming the psyches of those who play them (Slevin, 2004). The city of Los Angeles and the State of Nevada have gone so far as to file lawsuits against video game companies (Jenkins, 2006; Sinclair, 2006).

Likewise, in movies you often flit between action in various scenes. That’s very difficult to do in games, as you generally play a single character: if you switch, it breaks immersion. The fact that most games are first-person shooters today makes that clear. Stories in which the player doesn’t inhabit the main character are difficult for games to handle.” Hideo Kojima Simon Parkin (2014), “Hideo Kojima: ‘Metal Gear questions US dominance of the world”, The Guardian iii AGRADECIMENTOS Por começar quero desde já agradecer o constante e imprescindível apoio, compreensão, atenção e orientação dos Professores Jean Rabot e Clara Simães, sem os quais este trabalho não teria a fruição completa e correta. The data were gathered by actual use of the simulation and an electronic mail network was employed to secure impressions from users of the simulation. SimCity (developed by Maxis) provides t .e player with rules of human factors, economic factors, survival factors, and political factors that are both opportunities and constraints to the master planner. In addition, there are numerous maps to monitor land use patterns, zoning, demography, pollution, and other factors as the simulation progresses. The simulation also allows the user to manipulate tax rates and funding levels for the city. The point of the simulation is to duplicate the real world of urban politics with the instantaneous ability of the computer. The attraction of SimCity is the resemblance to the real-life choices that city planners must

  • A Sandbox for Modeling Social AI
The AIIDE-17 Workshop on Experimental AI in Games WS-17-19 A Sandbox for Modeling Social AI Ethan Robison Northwestern University [email protected] Abstract We present a system for quickly prototyping AI code for modeling social interaction among the simulated residents of a skyscraper. The system is built on top of a commercially released indie game but replaces its character AI with a gen- eral-purpose logic programming language. These two fea- tures together simplify the more tedious parts of creating pro- totype AI code from scratch, enabling more effort to be fo- cused on the meatier parts of research. Introduction One of the obstacles facing game AI researchers is the sheer Figure 1: Screenshot of the AI Sandbox scope of effort involved in making a game, most of which has little or no publishable research content: UI design, play- testing, music and sound effects, and art and animation are Architecture notoriously difficult facets of game design. While generic In this paper, we describe a system for rapidly prototyping assets for certain genres, such as First-Person Shooters, or AI code within the framework of the commercially released (especially) platformers exist, finding appropriate assets for game Project Highrise (SomaSim LLC, 2016). For social games like The Sims 3 (Electronic In the game, players develop and arrange a skyscraper as Arts Inc., 2009) or visual novel style games like Long Live they see fit, and the tenants and visitors to the skyscraper go the Queen (Hanako Games, 2012), researchers are often about their lives-working, shopping, eating, and sleeping in forced to get by with a good deal of willing suspension of the simulated world.

To investigate the historical and epistemological foundations of current systems thinking promises to lead to an understanding of the current condition that we are in – and its technological groundings. When system-oriented thinking emerged within biological contexts in the first half of the 20 th Century, it came along with universal pretensions: the concepts of ecosystems (Tansley) and general systems theory (von Bertalanffy) were both immersed in longstanding struggles between materialism and holism.
