J.D. EDWARDS AND SUN JOIN FORCES TO DRIVE THE NETWORKED ENTERPRISE TO NEW HEIGHTS, ANSWERINGTHE CALL FOR DYNAMIC ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING SOLUTIONS Submitted by: Golin Tuesday, 8 December 1998 Idea to Action Initiative Leverages Sun's Enterprise and Java Technologies to Provide Customers with Flexible, Scalable Business Solutions for Today's Competitive Market Enterprise business software provider J.D. Edwards & Company (NASDAQ: JDEC) and leading enterprise technology provider Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW) today announced a strategic business alliance, a key component of which is the availability of J.D. Edwards' OneWorld enterprise software on Sun systems. The combination of OneWorld and Sun technologies provides the market with a solid, yet adaptable, solution that enables customers to incorporate new ideas into their businesses long after the enterprise-wide solution has been implemented. "As many companies have learned the painful way, business process reengineering is not a one time exercise...it is continuous," said Clare Gillan, vice president, applications and information access, International Data Corporation Research. "Adaptable enterprise information systems not only can improve the hard dollar return on IT investments but also provide companies more agility to change business processes when finding better ways of conducting business or when market conditions change." "The high-volume processing and partitioning capabilities available with Sun Solaris are critical to supporting customers' supply chains by enabling them to grow and expand as business opportunities dictate," said Doug Massingill, president and CEO at J.D. Edwards. "Sun technologies, systems and support capability coupled with OneWorld software allow enterprise-scale customers to quickly and easily change business processes and extend the corporate intranet to suppliers and distributors across the Internet while minimising risk. This adaptability is paramount to our customers' ability to address changing market conditions, competitive pressures and the ability to incorporate new technologies like Java into the enterprise." OneWorld will run on Sun's Solaris operating environment, and take advantage of the 64-bit capabilities of the Solaris 7 software. OneWorld users will be able to leverage the enterprise class clustering technology available in Solaris to have near continuous access to their business services. As the leading Internet server operating system, the robust and scalable Solaris operating environment can support more users, heavier workloads and greater network traffic than any other competing operating environment. OneWorld for the Solaris 7 operating environment is scheduled to be available in Spring 1999 and will include full HTML and Java technology support. "This is an incredibly opportune time for Sun to ally itself with J.D. Edwards, as they launch their innovative Idea to Action initiative," said Ed Zander, president, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "J.D. Edwards' offering goes beyond technology to a true business solution that lends flexibility and room to grow. The strength of Sun's systems and Java technology will enable OneWorld customers to smoothly and solidly handle high-volume processing environments and large numbers of users." Customer Satisfaction To further increase customer satisfaction, J.D. Edwards has joined Sun's Vendor Integration Program Page 1 (SunVIP). Through the SunVIP Program, customers contact either J.D. Edwards or Sun for interoperability problems, and the technical support organisations work together without sacrificing best of class service. Sun will provide professional services to maximize the performance of OneWorld running on Sun systems. J.D. Edwards and Sun are also establishing competency centers to assist customers worldwide with solution sizing, configuration, integration, benchmark and system tuning. About Sun Microsystems, Inc.
