Within the seedbank we have one paid coordinator and around 20-30 seed guardians who are volunteers. We are passionate about improving the diversity of seed available to our community and increasing accessibility to locally saved seed. Our seed guardians form a network of growers across the Stroud District, saving seed from vegetables, herbs and flowers from back gardens, allotments and community plots. Our saved seed is pooled and packaged in the Autumn, ready for distribution over the Winter months. We only ask for a donation in exchange for our seed. Each year the demand for saved seed increases, last year (2020) we supplied over 1000 packets of seed to the public of Stroud at markets, events and in collaboration with local community shops. As a group, we celebrate locally adapted seed, seed diversity and growing without the use of chemicals. -

In general, irrigated and well maintained leafy plants burn slowly. By replacing highly flammable vegetation with these fire resistant recommended species, you can significantly improve the statistical survivability of your home when a wildfire threatens. Courtesy of the “Villager Nursery” in Truckee, this list of fire resistive plants should be considered when enhancing or adding landscape. Here are some other key components to remember when selecting appropriate fire resistant landscaping plants. Choose plants that don’t produce much litter such as dead branches and twigs Plants that produce oils, resins or waxes should be avoided When planting from the approved list, appropriately space plants to prevent fire spread Never plant under conifer trees, this can create a ladder effect which allows smaller ground fires the ability to transfer into larger trees creating crown fires To help ensure their fire resistance, plants must be maintained, watered, and pruned. Routine care will provide you with an attractive defensible space landscape and help ensure the survival of your property in the event of a wildfire. We particularly want to thank the new members who donated seed in their first year with the Club. Long before a chef conceives a dish and even before farmers sow their fields, the plant breeder helps decide what qualities an ingredient will bring to the table. The problem? Flavor doesn’t usually make the cut. Too often, plant breeders are asked to select for yield, shelf life and uniformity, at the expense of good food, nutrition and our environment. What if, instead, we started with what’s delicious? Pairing chefs and breeders in the field and kitchen, Row 7 seeks to rewrite the recipe for our food, developing new varieties of vegetables and grains that improve our diets and our landscapes. Plant pathogens, insect pests and weeds can significantly reduce plant growth and development. Household insects can infest our food and cause structural damage to our homes. The Plant Problem Clinic addresses these problems by providing identifications, followed by management recommendations. The Clinic also serves as an information resource for Clemson University Extension, teaching, regulatory and research personnel. As a part of the Department of Plant Industry in Regulatory Services, the Plant Problem Clinic also helps to detect and document new plant pests and diseases in South Carolina. -

Throughout, it is clear that the path of agriculture begins with the seed. Over the past 40 years, the U.S. has led a radical shift toward commercialization, consolidation, and control of seed. Prior to the advent of industrial agriculture, there were thousands of seed companies and public breeding institutions. Our objective was to determine effects of harvest date, P fertilization (0 and 600 kg haÀ1 yrÀ1), and pollard height (shoots clipped at 5-, 50-, and 100- cm above ground) on foliar and shoot allometry of black locust. The experiment was conducted on a naturally regenerated 2-yr-old black locust stand (15,000 trees haÀ1). Basal shoot diameter and foliar mass were measured monthly in June to October 2002 and 2003. Foliar and shoot dry mass (Y) was estimated from basal shoot diameter (D) by the function Y = aDb, with regression explaining ‡95% of variance. Allometry of foliar mass was affected by harvest date, increasing at a greater rate with D in September than in June or July, but not by P fertilization or pollard height. -
