Last Time Out -- The Cru is playing a game for the fi rst time since winning the program’s second National Champion- ship with a 24-16 victory over Mount Union in Stagg Bowl XLVI in Shenandoah, Texas last December. The Purple Raiders jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Jase Hammack hit T.J. Josey with a 36-yard touchdown strike to pull UMHB to within 10-7. Mount Union tacked on another fi eld goal before the Cru marched 60 yards in seven plays and Markeith Miller scored on a two-yard run to put UMHB up 14-13 with just 38 seconds remaining in the opening half. Anthony Avila kicked a 30-yard fi eld goal to give the Cru a 17-13 advantage after UMHB’s opening drive of the second half. It would stay that way until Hammack found a wide-open K.J. Miller for a 16-yard TD toss with 9:46 left to play. Cory Barnett kicked another fi eld goal to pull Mount Union to within 24-16 just over two and a half minutes later, but the Cru defense stiff ened from there to pre- serve the win. Hammack fi nished 11-19 for 147 yards and two scores and Markeith Miller added 90 rushing yards and a TD. Josey had 78 receiving yards and 21 rushing yards to win Most Outstanding Player honors. De Jackson topped the UMHB defense with 12 total tackles and Jeff erson Fritz intercepted a pass. Both teams fi nished with 303 yards of total off ense in the contest. The Cru also served as co-hosts for the game with the City of Shenandoah in the fi rst Stagg Bowl played somewhere other than Salem, Virginia in the last 25 years. UMHB was also making its third consecutive appearance in the Division III National Championship game. Albright is coming off a 63-28 loss to Salisbury last Friday in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Gulls jumped out to a 21-0 lead before Jimmy Lahay hit Mike Jordan with a two-yard scoring pass. The defi cit would grow to 42-7 before Lahay added TD tosses of six yards to Malik Bootman and 17 yards to Jordan. Salisbury added three more touchdowns before Todd Shelley came off the bench to fi nd Jordan with a 64-yard scoring strike to close out the scoring. The Albright off ense had success through the air, but could not get the running game going. The Lions threw for 256 yards, but ran for just 11. Lahay threw for 128 yards and three scores and Shelley added 109 yards and a TD. Jordan had a huge game, catching 11 passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Tony Thorpe was the leading rusher with 36 yards on 11 carries. Sam Viera led the Albright defense with 11 tackles and Daniel Vital added eight stops. Ryan Rapp had the team’s only sack. The Lions turned the ball over four times. Salisbury rolled up 360 yards on the ground with its option-based attack and totalled 488 yards of off ense.

The Head Coaches -- The Cru is under the direction of head coach Pete Fredenburg. Fredenburg (Southwest Texas State, 1970) is in his 22nd season as the only head coach in the history of the UMHB football program. He has led The Cru to a 225-39 overall record, two NCAA Division III National Championships and 16 ASC championships. UMHB has qualifi ed for the NCAA Division III National Championships 17 times in his tenure. Fredenburg is 29-8 in non-conference play, 126-14 in home games and 1-0 against Albright College in his career at UMHB. The Cru is 36-15 in the NCAA Division III National Championships under Fredenburg. He is an 11-time ASC Coach of the Year and a ten-time AFCA Region III Coach of the Year. Fredenburg was named AFCA Division III National Coach of the Year following the 2016 season and was named Divi- sion III National Coach of the Year by both Liberty Mutual and Monthly Magazine following the 2013 season. Fredenburg spent 13 years as an assistant coach at Baylor University, one season as an assistant at Louisiana State University and served as defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech University for three seasons prior to joining UMHB. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in April of 2018. John Marzka (Allegheny, 1991) is in his 13th season as the head coach at Albright College. Marzka has an 85-49 career record with the Lions and he is 0-1 against the Cru as a head coach in his career. He has guided the Lions to a pair of MAC championships and three berths in the NCAA Division III National Championships during his career. Marzka was voted John C. Whitehead/Nike NCAA Division III Coach of the Year following the 2009 season. He was a three-year let- terman and two-year starter at center for Allegheny and also served as co-captain for the 1990 NCAA Division III National Championship team. Marzka was a two-time All-American and played for three conference championships in his career. His coaching career started at Erie Academy and he has also made collegiate coaching stops at his alma mater, Fordham Univer- sity and Thiel College. Marzka graduated from Allegheny in 1991 with a degree in psychology.

The All-Time Series -- UMHB leads the all-time series between the two teams 1-0 after winning last year at Albright. This will be the fi rst meeting between the two teams in Belton.

The Cru On The Radio -- All UMHB football games will be broadcast on Fox Sports Radio (93.9 FM and 1330 AM) this season. The broadcast will start 30 minutes before game time. Long-time Cru Sports Information Director Jon Wallin handles play-by-play duties for the seventh straight season with former UMHB off ensive coordinator George Haff ner once again handling color commentary. The Fox Sports Radio broadcast will also be available over the Internet on the UMHB athletic department web site and can be accessed on your mobile device by downloading the TuneIn app. UMHB will provide free live video streaming and live statistics of the game. You can fi nd links to all of the live coverage through the Cru Athletic Department web site at www.cruathletics.com. UMHB A G N P. 3

When UMHB has the ball -- The Cru off ense was one of the most explosive in the country last year, but loses some major contributors. UMHB averaged 53.4 points, 238.7 rushing yards, 205.2 passing yards and 443.9 yards of total off ense per game last season. The Cru converted 46 percent of the time on third down and 67 percent of the time on fourth down on the year. UMHB committed just 13 turnovers (6 INT, 7 ) and surrendered just 18 sacks on the season. QB Jase Hammack will likely miss time with injury early after going 14-0 as starter last season. Luke Poorman and Ryan Redding are battling for the starting job in Hammack’s absence. Poorman threw for 639 yards and eight TD’s last season and Redding dazzled in limited action after moving up to the varsity for the postseason. RB Markeith Miller and his ASC record rushing totals have moved on, leaving the running back job up for grabs. Former JV standout Justin Gipson is battling freshmen Robert McGrue and James Harris and Linfi eld transfer Chidubem Nnoli for the job. Nnoli has almost 2,000 rushing yards in his career but has been limited by an injury in camp. WR T.J. Josey graduated as the Cru’s all-time leading receiver and Jonel Reed should try to fi ll his shoes after catching 31 passes for 588 yards and seven scores last season. Several newcomers and JV players will also have a chance to step into major roles in the receiving corps with transfer Brenton Martin expected to be a threat in the passing game. PK Anthony Avila is back after hitting 12-15 fi eld goals and 71-75 extra points. Tavion Page and Martin are being counted on to pick up some of the slack in the return game with the loss of K.J. Miller and Aaron Sims. UMHB av- eraged 20.3 yards per kickoff return and 24.9 yards per punt return last year and the Cru had eight punt returns and a kickoff return for touchdowns. The Lions defense struggled to slow down Salisbury’s option-based rushing attack in the season opener. The Sea Gulls put up 63 points, 360 rushing yards, 128 passing yards and 488 yards of total off ense last week. Albright was not able to force a turnover and had just one sack as a team. Salisbury converted 4-11 third downs and went 2-4 on fourth down. The Lions also forced three punts in the contest. SS Robert Terrell had a team-best 10 tackles. LB Sam Viera had a team-high 11 tackles and LB Daniel Vital added eight more. NG Ryan Rapp had Albright’s only sack of the game and CB Kaamal Stew- art posted the team’s only pass break-up. P’s Chris Knop and Jimmy Lahay shared duties, punting three times apiece. They combined to averaged 30.3 yards per kick and were unable to put one of those boots inside the Sea Gulls’ 20-yard line. Lahay had the longest boot of the night with a 33-yarder. The Lions’ kick coverage units were solid in the season opener. Salisbury managed just 7.7 yards per punt return and 17.6 yards per kickoff return on the night.

When Albright has the ball -- The Lions’ off ense was more productive in this year’s season opener, with most of the dam- age coming through the air. Albright managed 28 points, 11 yards rushing, 256 passing yards and 267 yards of total off ense in that week one loss. The Lions converted 5-15 on third down and went 2-2 on fourth down attempts while controlling the ball for 34:33. Albright committed four turnovers (3 INT, 1 ) and allowed four sacks in the contest. QB’s Jimmy Lahay and Todd Shelley both saw time with Lahay hitting 15-31 for 128 yards and three TDs and Shelley going 8-13 for 109 yards and a score through the air. WR Mike Jordan had a huge game with 11 receptions for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Zack Miller added seven grabs for 50 yards and Malik Bootman had a TD catch and 23 rushing yards. RB Tony Thorpe led the ground attack with 36 yards on 11 carries. Three diff erent players threw passes for the Lions, six diff erent players carried the ball and four players caught a pass in the season opener. PK Chris Knop is replacing an All-MAC selection in Kevin Goetz and he hit both of his extra point attempts. The Lions also converted a two-point try after failing on one earlier in the contest. Albright averaged 27.0 yards per kickoff return in the opener with Jordan also serving as a weapon in that arsenal. The team did not return a punt in the season opener. The Cru defense was dominating last season but must replace fi ve starters from that squad this season. UMHB gave up averages of 8.5 points, 82.4 rushing yards, 137.1 passing yards and 219.5 yards of total off ense on the season. Opponents converted 27 percent of the time on third down and 24 percent of the time on fourth down last season. UMHB forced 46 turn- overs (32 , 14 fumbles) and recorded 35 sacks on the year. The Cru had six returns and three fumble returns for scores on the year. UMHB must replace the entire starting linebacking corps and half of the secondary, but brings back some important pieces. DT Joey Longoria is the ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after posting 67 total tack- les and a team-best 8.0 sacks last year. FS Jeff erson Fritz set a school and conference record with 12 interceptions last season and won ASC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Both players are Preseason All-Americans. LB Tevin Jones returns after a year away, but had 129 tackles as an All-American in 2017. The entire starting defensive line and most of the key back-ups return, as does CB Keith Gipson. DE Elijah Cross and DT Isaiah Johnson were both All-Conference players last season and Gipson intercepted four passes. The Cru will look for young talent and veterans to step up at linebacker and provide depth in the secondary. There are six freshmen or newcomers to the program listed on the defensive two-deep. Jeff erson Fritz is also the leading candidate to take over as the team’s starting punter this season. UMHB’s kick coverage units held opponents to averages of 15.2 yards per kickoff return and 6.7 yards per punt return last year. UMHB A G N P. 4

Someone New Will Get Some Carries -- With the departure of the all-time leading rusher in UMHB and ASC history in Markeith Miller, some new names and faces will carry the load at running back this season. Going into Saturday’s season opener, the top three running backs on the depth chart are: Robert McGrue (Fr., Beaumont), Justin Gipson (So., Frisco) and Tye Hill (Fr., Killeen). None of those three players has a carry in a regular season varsity game in college. Chidubem Nnoli (Jr., Beaverton, OR) rushed for almost 2,000 yards at Linfi eld College the last two seasons, but has yet to practice because of a quad injury. Another talented freshman, Jo’Vel McDaniel (Fr., Texas City) could also contribute at some point this season, along with last year’s #3 back, Olan Vining III (Jr., Seguin). Vining is the leading active returning rusher for UMHB this year. RB Marquis Duncan (Jr., San Antonio) is the leading returner rusher, and will have a chance to play his way into an impact role later this season and QB Jase Hammack (Sr., Andrews) was right behind Vining, but will be held out at least one week as he recovers from off -season surgery.

A New Face At Quarterback, At Least For Now -- With Jase Hammack being held out for a week or more as he recov- ers from off season surgery, QB’s Luke Poorman (Sr., Orlando, FL), Ryan Redding (So., New Braunfels) and Tommy Bowden (Fr., Brownwood) are battling to be the starting quarterback for the Cru this week. Whichever player wins the starting job will become just the 13th quarterback to start a season opener for UMHB joining Terry Taylor (1998), Orlando Garza (1999), Cody Fredenburg (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003), Andy Padron (2004), Josh Welch (2005, 2006, 2007), Kyle Noack (2008, 2009, 2010), LiDarral Bailey (2011, 2012), Jake Sims (2013), Zach Anderson (2014, 2015), Blake Jackson (2016), T.J. Josey (2017) and Hammack (2018). After Jackson started all 15 games in 2016, the Cru will now be starting its fi fth or sixth diff erent quarterback in the last 16 contests. Poorman has the most varsity experience after starting seven games and throwing 100 passes in two seasons at Mount Union and starting the McMurry game last season. Redding moved up to the varsity in the postseason and saw time in the victory over Berry College. Bowden is in his fi rst season of . Josey, Kyle Jones and Carl Robinson III all started games at that position for the Cru in 2017 and Hammack and Poorman both earned starts last year.

Reed Climbs The Charts -- WR Jonel Reed (Sr., Fort Worth) was expected to step into the role of featured receiver left by the graduation of T.J. Josey before a quad injury sidelined him. Reed is still closing in on UMHB’s top ten on several career receiving charts. Reed enters the season with 67 career receptions and needs just 11 more grabs to “catch” Ervin Johnson for tenth place on the Cru’s all-time list at 78. Reed’s receptions have been good for 1,088 yards and he is just 157 yards away from tying DeNerian Thomas for tenth place on that list at 1,145 yards. Reed is already in UMHB’s top ten with 12 career touchdown catches. He is currently tied with Patrick Oliver for tenth place on that list. Reed’s next TD grab will move him into a tie for ninth place with Johnson at 13 TD receptions.

Jones Is Back And Ready To Crack The Top Ten -- LB Tevin Jones (Sr., Belton) returns to the Cru after sitting out last season. The 2017 All-American enters the season as UMHB’s active leader in career tackles with 206 stops. He is only 26 tackles away from moving into a tie for tenth-place on the Cru’s career list with Teidrick Smith and Matt Cody at 232 tackles. Jones also has 21.5 tackles for loss in his career and has a chance to move into the top ten all-time. He needs 15.0 tackle for loss to match Andy McAteer for tenth place at 36.5 TFL. To give you an idea of how realistic those numbers are, in his last full season in 2017, Jones recorded 129 total tackles and 13.5 tackles for loss.

Fritz Could Pick A Record This Season -- FS Jeff erson Fritz (Jr., Kaufman) is the reigning ASC Defensive Player of the Year after shattering the conference and school single-season record with 12 interceptions last season. He also added 40 total tackles, seven pass break-ups and a pair of blocked kicks on the way to All-American honors. Fritz is already in second place on the UMHB career interception list just two years into his career with 16 total picks. He needs two more interceptions to tie Baylor Mullins’ school record of 18. Fritz has intercepted two passes in a game four times in his UMHB career going into the 2019 season. Mullins also shares the ASC career record with Alex Hansen of Hardin-Simmons University. Fritz also has 12 pass break-ups in his career to give him a total of 28 passes defended. That total puts him just seven passes defended away from breaking into the Cru’s top ten all-time in that category. Raylon Hickey, Javicz Jones and Josh Kubiak currently share ninth place with 35 career passes defended. And don’t forget, Fritz will still have the 2020 season to add to his totals with two years of eligibility remaining. Fritz is also following in Mullins’ footsteps in another area. He is expected to take over as the Cru’s starting punter this season. Mullins did double duty as UMHB’s starting Sam Linebacker and punter during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Three of Fritz’s 16 career interceptions have come in the Stagg Bowl, with two interceptions in the 2017 game and one pick in last year’s contest. He was also named Preseason All-American by four diff erent publications prior to this campaign. UMHB A G N P. 5

Longoria Bags A Preseason Honor -- DT Joey Longoria (Sr., Pearland) was voted ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year this fall and also earned Preseason All-America honors from four diff erent publications. He was ASC Defensive Line- man of the Year last year and also earned All-American recognition after posting 67 total tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss and a team-best 8.0 sacks. He also forced a fumble and recovered two more, one of them for a touchdown. Longoria’s 118 career tackles put him second among UMHB returners this season behind only Tevin Jones and his 20.0 tackles for loss rank only behind Elijah Cross. Longoria comes into the season with 13.0 career sacks and is only 2.5 away from tying Brenson Bristow for tenth place on the Cru career chart with 15.5. If Longoria can match last season’s production in sacks, he could vault all the way up to a tie for fourth-place on the UMHB career chart with Haston Adams at 21.0 sacks.

And He Will Have Help Up Front -- Longoria should have plenty of help up front as the Cru returns all four of last year’s starters on the defensive line. DE Elijah Cross (Sr., Sonora), DT Isaiah Johnson (Sr., Warner Robbins, GA) and DE Khevon Shepard (Jr. Brenham) are all back for UMHB this season. Cross and Johnson both earned ASC All-Conference honors last season. Cross enters 2019 as the Cru’s active leader with 24.0 tackles for loss. He needs just 12.5 more to tie McAteer’s tenth-place total of 36.5. Johnson posted 45 total tackles and 9.0 tackles for loss last season. Cross recorded 41 total tackles and 13.0 tackles for loss. Shepard had 37 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and fi nished second to Longoria with 6.0 sacks on the year.

Captains Of The Ship -- The UMHB football program voted four players to serve as Team Captains this season. DT Joey Longoria, FS Jeff erson Fritz, CB Keith Gipson and WR Jonel Reed will serve as the Cru’s leadership foursome on game days this season.

Streaking Into The Opener -- UMHB will put several active winning streaks on the line in the 2019 season opener. The team has won its last 15 games, going back to a 12-0 loss to Mount Union in Stagg Bowl XLV in December of 2017. The Cru has won 12 consecutive season openers dating back to a 15-10 loss at Christopher Newport in the 2006 kickoff game. UMHB has also won 32 straight regular season contests. The Cru last lost a regular season game when Hardin-Simmons edged the team 29-26 in week #8 of the 2015 season in Abilene. UMHB also has a 25-game, non-conference winning streak on the line. The Cru’s last regular season loss to a non-conference opponent came in a 40-28 defeat at the hands of Southern Oregon University on October 25, 2008.

Fredenburg Keeps Moving Up Wins List -- Cru Head Coach Pete Fredenburg enters the 2019 season in second place in career victories among active NCAA Division III head coaches. Fredenburg trails only Montclair State’s Rick Giancola by 22 wins on that chart. Here is the list of the top ten active Division III win totals among head football coaches.

1. Rick Giancola, Montclair State 247 2. Pete Fredenburg, UMHB 225 3. Steve Johnson, Bethel College 219 4. Rick Lackner, Carnegie-Mellon 217 5. Larry Kindbom, Washington-St. Louis 214 6. Home, Sweet, Home -- UMHB will open a busy home schedule with Saturday’s contest against Albright. The Cru plays its fi rst three games of the season at home and has a total of six home games on the slate this year. UMHB has never lost a regular season game at Crusader Stadium and is 49-2 all-time going on its home fi eld into its seventh season in the facility. The only two losses in that stretch came in a 16-15 loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater in the 2013 NCAA Semifi nals and a 31-28 loss to Linfi eld College in the Second Round of the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships. The Cru also has an extended regular season home winning streak that dates all the way back to the program’s days at Belton High School’s Tiger Field. UMHB has won 61 straight regular season games on its home fi eld and has not lost a regular season game in its home stadium since dropping a 7-3 decision to Wisconsin-Whitewater on October 28, 2006.
