Which term is used depends partially on where you are. In Europe, the term “naturist” is used almost exclusively while “nudist” is often derogatory. In the United States, most people who attend clubs call themselves nudists because they belong to the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) who uses the term “nudist”. Americans who go to free beaches tend to prefer to identify themselves as “naturists” because historically, the Naturist Society (TNS) has been the biggest defender of free beaches in the United States. In Canada, the official naturist organizations are called the Federation of Canadian Naturists (FCN) and the Fédération québécoise de naturism (FQN) but many Canadian use “naturism” and “nudism” as synonyms. Over time, people sometime change from being a mere participant in naturism to being an activist. But not everyone sees naturism as a life philosophy. Thus we intro- duce two categories within naturism: the Ethical Naturist and the Recreational Natur- ist. These are not finite classifications. Nudism vs Naturism

Nudists come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, ages, colors, ancestries, dialects, hand- icaps, talents and personalities. And in all sexes. If you would visit a meeting of nud- ists, you will meet bankers, lawyers, farmers, secretaries, journalists, teachers, and… etc. etc. But you may not find out who is a nudist before you visit such an event, since most of us seem to be keen on protecting some privacy. Something you always should respect of course. In this short introduction to nudism you will find out that naturists represent a cross- section of society. They belief in morality, civic responsibility, education, good physical and mental health and try to live unbiased in this world. Or they don’t. But they all believe that the unclothed human body is comfortable, wholesome and worthy of respect. We are all beautiful creatures.

Naturism is not a religion

Naturism is not a religion, but it may look like one. That has everything to do with the respectful way naturists talk about nature, about people and the respect and body- confidence they have in general. And that makes since: by taking your clothes of you can’t hide anything anymore. Not even yourself. You true spirit can come out and shine. And there is a true community spirit on most clubs, camping's, resorts, sauna’s, beaches, etc. So that makes it more logical that naturism can be seen as a religion. Maybe it would make life easier if it was to be recognized as a religion. Who knows! It is also not a sport. But you will notice that swimming, walking, volleyball and tennis are favorite pastimes for nudists. It is also not a hobby club. Read more

3 Writing from Naturist Life

The short story collection Murder in the Nudist Colony has been a great success, and the next volume, Romance in the Nudist Colony, is well under way. We are fast ap- proaching the deadline for submissions on December 1. On a Twitter thread started by volume organizer Ted Bun, several writers – writers who meet their deadlines much more quickly than I – have commented on whether their story for Romance is related to the one they submitted for Murder. Ana J. tweeted “My story (“Romance”) picks up where the previous story (“Murder”) ended,” and I responded that mine does too, or at least, not too long after the story for Murder ended. When we were writing and submitting for Murder, none of us knew that there would be another volume forth- coming with a romance theme, and yet I suspect several of us found a romance to be a natural development for characters from stories we submitted for the first volume.

Why does this happen, and why might it be important? I know in my case, it has to do with the desire to expand the psychological complexity of the characters. Depth of personality can be more thoroughly developed over a set of stories than in just one. For people predisposed to take part in non-sexual nude activities body image, self- esteem, and life-satisfaction are improved by such participation. Now, research pub- lished in the International Journal of Happiness and Development suggests that for people who may not be predisposed to such activities, a nudity-based intervention may nevertheless lead to positive improvements in body image.

Negative body image is a mental health problem that is widespread. Surveys of thou- sands of people across many different countries suggest that dissatisfaction with one's own body is common across many diverse body types. This dissatisfaction can lead to deeper, problems, such as depression, substance abuse, self-harm, risky sexual behav- ior, eating disorders, and suicide.

Conversely, those with a positive body appreciation, enjoy better psychological well- being in this context are often proactive in coping with personal crises and other prob- lems, have greater optimism, and take part in safer sexual behavior. Overall, "Body image is an important aspect of one's self-concept, and has a profound influence on both self-esteem," writes researcher Keon West of the Department of Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, UK. Nothing new about using nudity in politics and protest

In early October, a group of celebrities (including Amy Schumer, Tiffany Haddish, Chris Rock, and Mark Ruffalo) made waves when they appeared naked in a viral YouTube video produced by non-partisan organization Represent Us, urging Americans to be careful with their mail-in ballot for the presidential election.

Many headlines were derisive (the country being not yet over the tone-deaf Gal Gadot -spearheaded clip of several well-intentioned celebrities singing lines from John Len- non’s “Imagine” at the start of the pandemic), but that was beside the point — the nakedness of Ruffalo and company created much media buzz, thus drawing a lot of attention to their political objective. Nudity has long been a tactic used to generate attention, in both politics and protest. One of the most famous incidents, Lady Godiva’s nude protest on horseback, is over 1,000 years old. Here in Canada, in the early 20th century, the Doukhobors protested religious persecution and demonstrated their humbleness by marching nude — men, women, and children. Their tenacity resulted in the criminal code being amended in 1931 to outlaw nudity. As a result, over 600 were arrested and sent to prison for being nude. Some forms of this kind of protest have had astounding longevity. PETA’s “I’d rather go naked” antifur campaign, which featured celebrities posing nude, finally ended in February after 30 years of using nudity to push their animal-friendly agenda. As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues on worldwide with uncertainty of what the “new normal” will entail, many of us with breasts are sure of one thing: our boobs are finally free. Yes, after many years of having them locked up in “boob prison,” working at home and remaining indoors has allowed us to kick our bras to the curb. The consensus seems to be that if you’re not going anywhere, then there’s no point in wearing a bra. Just let those babies breathe and do their thing!

But while the bra-free life is a comfortable one, it does beg the question: Does shun- ning my bra affect my body in any way? Short answers from experts: yes and no. So let’s unwrap that, shall we?

To understand how bras affect our breasts, it’s important to understand how they were created in the first place. According to Amsterdam-based clothing compa- ny, Hunkemöller, bras can be dated back to 2500 B.C., when women wore a corset-like belt that pushed their bare breasts up. The first modern bra didn’t arrive until the 1889 World’s Fair when French inventor Herminie Cadolle decided to cut the corset into two pieces, giving the upper portion the straps we know today. Then, in 1913, Mary Phelps Jacob came along and perfected what Cadolle had started, by cre- ating the most-widely used type of bras we see on the market today. Read more
