THEOLOGIAE APUD PONTIFICIAM UNIVERSITATEM S. THOMAE IN URBE ___________________ Moderator: Prof. James Puglisi, S. A. ROMAE 2014 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The completion of this research is the result of much toil and prayer. As I place on record my indebtedness to all those who have helped me to finish this doctoral dissertation, I bow down before God and proclaim with Mary: “The Almighty has done great things for me.” I am really privileged to do this work with Prof. James Puglisi S.A., whose expertise in the area of Dogmatic theology, Ecumenism, and Interreligious affairs is prodigious. He also has an in-depth knowledge of theological affairs related to the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, which enormously aided me to dig deeper. It is with gratitude I remember all the professors and the Staff of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, who helped me to broaden my intellectual abilities. My bishop, Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, the Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, with his paternal care, encouragement and constant support helped me to finish the studies on time. I thank Mr. Lintu Markose and Dn. Michael O’Keefe for their valuable help in language corrections of my text. I also gratefully acknowledge the support and love I received from the community at the Curia Generalizia dei Passionisti and Collegio San Norberto, during my stay in Rome. My gratitude goes to my friends in the Archdiocese of Detroit, USA, especially of St. Thomas a’Becket Catholic Church, for their encouragement and support. Finally, I remember with gratitude my family, and friends – the priests, sisters and brothers – of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Community in Rome. I express my special thanks to Msgr. Johnson Kaimalayil and the priests of the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum. May God bless each one of us and fill us with his graces. Rome, May 2014 Rev. 3 (2016) Miscellaneous 3: AP-BI Christian Saṃnyāsis and the Enduring Influence of Bede Griffiths in California ENRICO BELTRAMINI Department of Religious Studies, Santa Clara University, California, USA © 2016 Ruhr-Universität Bochum Entangled Religions 3 (2016) ISSN 2363-6696 http://dx.doi.org/10.13154/er.v3.2016.AP-BI Enrico Beltramini Christian Saṃnyāsis and the Enduring Influence of Bede Griffiths in California ENRICO BELTRAMINI Santa Clara University, California, USA ABSTRACT This article thematizes a spiritual movement of ascetic hermits in California, which is based on the religious practice of Bede Griffiths. These hermits took their religious vows in India as Christian saṃnyāsis, in the hands of Father Bede, and then returned to California to ignite a contemplative renewal in the Christian dispirited tradition. Some tried to integrate such Indian tradition in the Benedictine order, while others traced new paths. KEY WORDS Bede; Griffiths; California; saṃnyāsa; Camaldoli; Christianity Preliminary Remarks— Sources and Definitions The present paper profited greatly from its main sources, Sr. Michaela Terrio and Br. Francis Ali, hermits at Sky Farm Hermitage, who generously shared with me their memories of Bede Griffiths as well as spiritual insights of their life of renunciation as Christian saṃnyāsis in California. Several of the personalities mentioned in this article are personally known to the author. I offer a definition of the main terms used here:saṃnyāsis ‘ ’ are the renouncers, the acosmic hermits in the tradition of the Gītā; ‘saṃnyāsa’ is the ancient Indian consecration to acosmism and also the fourth and last stage (aśhrama) in the growth of human life; ‘guru’ is a polysemic word in India; its theological meaning depends on the religious tradition.

Goldfrank This essay originated at the time that ASEC was in its early stages and in response to a requestthat I write something aboutthe church Fathers in medieval Rus'. I already knew finding the patrology concerning just the original Greek and Syriac texts is nothing short of a researcher’s black hole. Given all the complexities in volved in the manuscript traditions associated with such superstar names as Basil of Caesarea, Ephrem the Syrian, John Chrysostom, and Macarius of wherever (no kidding), to name a few1 and all of The author would like to thank the staffs of the Hilandar Research Library at The Ohio State University and, of course, the monks of Hilandar Monastery for encouraging the microfilming of the Hilandar Slavic manuscripts by Ohio State. I thank the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection; and Georgetown University’s Woodstock Theological Library as well as its Lauinger Library Reference Room for their kind help. Georgetown University’s Office of the Provost and Center for Eurasian, East European and Russian Studies provided summer research support. Thanks also to Jennifer Spock and Donald Ostrowski for their wise suggestions. 1 An excellent example of this is Plested, Macarian Legacy. V Praze dne 25. 11. 2014 2 Bibliografická citace Dopady různosti obřadů v manželských kauzách na církevním soudu [rukopis]: disertační práce / Miloš Szabo; vedoucí práce: Antonín Hrdina. – Praha, 2014. – 187 s.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO HIS HOLINESS BASELIOS MARTHOMA PAULOSE II CATHOLICOS OF THE MALANKARA ORTHODOX SYRIAN CHURCH Thursday, 5 September 2013 Video Your Holiness, dear Brothers in Christ, It is a joy for me to meet Your Holiness and the distinguished delegation of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Through you, I greet a Church that was founded upon the witness, even to martyrdom, that Saint Thomas gave to Our Lord Jesus Christ. The apostolic fraternity which united the first disciples in their service of the Gospel, today also unites our Churches, notwithstanding the many divisions that have arisen in the sometimes sad course of history, divisions which, thanks be to God, we are endeavouring to overcome in obedience to Lord’s will and desire (cf. Jn 17:21). The Apostle Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 2:28) with one of the most beautiful confessions of faith in Christ handed down by the Gospels, a faith which proclaims the divinity of Christ, his lordship in our lives, and his victory over sin and death through his resurrection. This event is so real that Saint Thomas is invited to touch for himself the actual marks of the crucified and risen Jesus (cf. Jn 20:27). It is precisely in this faith that we meet each other; it is this faith that unites us, even if we cannot yet share the Eucharistic table; and it is this faith which urges us to continue and intensify the commitment to ecumenism, encounter and dialogue towards full communion.
