These hermits took their religious vows in India as Christian saṃnyāsis, in the hands of Father Bede, and then returned to California to ignite a contemplative renewal in the Christian dispirited tradition. Some tried to integrate such Indian tradition in the Benedictine order, while others traced new paths. KEY WORDS Bede; Griffiths; California; saṃnyāsa; Camaldoli; Christianity Preliminary Remarks— Sources and Definitions The present paper profited greatly from its main sources, Sr. Michaela Terrio and Br. Francis Ali, hermits at Sky Farm Hermitage, who generously shared with me their memories of Bede Griffiths as well as spiritual insights of their life of renunciation as Christian saṃnyāsis in California. Several of the personalities mentioned in this article are personally known to the author. I offer a definition of the main terms used here:saṃnyāsis ‘ ’ are the renouncers, the acosmic hermits in the tradition of the Gītā; ‘saṃnyāsa’ is the ancient Indian consecration to acosmism and also the fourth and last stage (aśhrama) in the growth of human life; ‘guru’ is a polysemic word in India; its theological meaning depends on the religious tradition.

Goldfrank This essay originated at the time that ASEC was in its early stages and in response to a requestthat I write something aboutthe church Fathers in medieval Rus'. I already knew finding the patrology concerning just the original Greek and Syriac texts is nothing short of a researcher’s black hole. (+ 74 s. příloha) Anotace Křesťanství se z Jeruzaléma šířilo několika směry. Jedno z jeho nejvlivnějších center vzniklo v Římě, jenž se stal také sídlem papežů a zůstal jím i po přesídlení císaře do tehdy řecké Konstantinopole. Kromě Říma, spjatého s apoštolem Petrem však existovaly i další velké křesťanské obce, založené ostatními apoštoly, ležící na východ od římské říše, které se stejně jako ta římská nazývaly církví. A tak i dnes kromě největší latinské (římské) církve existují desítky východních, právem se chlubících vlastní apoštolskou tradicí. V průběhu dějin došlo několikrát k narušení jejich komunikace s Římem, ale i mezi sebou navzájem. V dnešní době, kdy z různých důvodů dochází k velkým migračním vlnám, se některá církevní společenství, doposud považována striktně za východní, dostávají do diaspory s latinskou církví, čímž vzniká nejen velká pravděpodobnost růstu počtu smíšených intereklesiálních manželství, ale zároveň také zvýšené množství manželských kauz, které bude muset následně řešit církevní soud. Aby jeho rozhodnutí bylo spravedlivé, je potřebné znát jak historii těchto východních církví, mezi nimiž je i dvacet dva sjednocených s Římem (tedy východní katolické církve), tak i především jejich teologická specifika, spiritualitu a partikulární právo.

Through you, I greet a Church that was founded upon the witness, even to martyrdom, that Saint Thomas gave to Our Lord Jesus Christ. The apostolic fraternity which united the first disciples in their service of the Gospel, today also unites our Churches, notwithstanding the many divisions that have arisen in the sometimes sad course of history, divisions which, thanks be to God, we are endeavouring to overcome in obedience to Lord’s will and desire (cf. Jn 17:21). The Apostle Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 2:28) with one of the most beautiful confessions of faith in Christ handed down by the Gospels, a faith which proclaims the divinity of Christ, his lordship in our lives, and his victory over sin and death through his resurrection. This event is so real that Saint Thomas is invited to touch for himself the actual marks of the crucified and risen Jesus (cf. Jn 20:27). It is precisely in this faith that we meet each other; it is this faith that unites us, even if we cannot yet share the Eucharistic table; and it is this faith which urges us to continue and intensify the commitment to ecumenism, encounter and dialogue towards full communion.
