Why not Milton? M That question served as the catalyst for what became a MILTON SPORTS HALL OF FAME: THE JOURNEY two-year campaign to establish the Milton Sports Hall of Fame — honouring the community’s premier athletes, teams and builders. From the rst meeting in fall 2014, it was evident there was | Thursday, November 24, 2016 | 24, November | Thursday, ample enthusiasm about this town’s sporting successes — both past and present — and a great desire to recognize them in prominent fashion. Getting there has been a long journey for the committee’s dozen or so members, who represent a vast cross-section of Milton. Some have played a key role in a local sports organization, while others simply acknowledge the value a sports hall of fame would bring to the community and have been willing to lend their time and talents to the project. MILTON CANADIAN CHAMPION MILTON The past two years have seen some lively discussion, countless meetings and more detail than most of us probably envisioned. NHL MORNING SKATE – FEB. 22, 2020 THREE HARD LAPS * The recent trend of teams putting together noteworthy performances immediately following a jersey retirement ceremony continued Friday, with Jordan Eberle scoring a hat trick after the Islanders honored John Tonelli. * Jared Spurgeon also tallied three times and joined a rare list of NHL defensemen to score a natural hat trick. * After falling behind 3-1 in the opening 3:23, the League-leading Bruins rallied to pull off a comeback win seen just six other times in NHL history. EBERLE SCORES HAT TRICK AFTER ISLANDERS RETIRE TONELLI’S No. 27 Jordan Eberle scored the third hat trick of his NHL career to help the Islanders defeat the Red Wings after they retired former forward and perennial fan favorite John Tonelli’s No. 27 in a pre-game ceremony at NYCB Live/Nassau Coliseum. * Tonelli, who skated each of his first eight NHL seasons with New York from 1978-79 to 1985- 86 (206-338—544 in 594 GP), was part of the franchise’s four Stanley Cup-winning teams which were won in consecutive fashion from 1980 to 1983. He assisted on Bobby Nystrom’s famous series-clinching overtime winner in Game 6 of the 1980 Final to help the Islanders capture their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. * Tonelli became the seventh player in franchise history to have his number retired, joining Denis Potvin (No. 5), Clark Gillies (No. 9), Bryan Trottier (No. 19), Mike Bossy (No. 22), Nystrom (No. 23) and Billy Smith (No. 31). Butch Goring (No. 91) will also receive the honor later this month on Feb.

  • After a Record Streak, a Blown Call Ended the 1979-80 Flyers' Quest For
The best there never was: After a record streak, a blown call ended the 1979-80 Flyers’ quest for a third Stanley Cup by Frank Fitzpatrick, Updated: February 12, 2019 -The Philadelphia Inquirer ELWOOD P. SMITH / FILE PHOTOGRAPH First in a six-part year-long series about the best local teams that never won a championship. Today: 1979-80 Flyers. Coming in April: the 1976-77 Sixers. When Pat Quinn replaced that day’s traditional practices with mandatory bonding sessions, during which his players could compete in anything but hockey, the Flyers coach began referring to Mondays as “Fun Days.” Though the name sounded oddly genteel for a sport that celebrated grinders and goons, the weekly softball, volleyball, and touch-football games, followed by beers at Rexy’s or the Philadium, helped fuse the 1979-80 Flyers, a loosely connected roster of veteran minor-leaguers, talented prospects, and leftover stars from the franchise’s back-to-back Stanley Cup champions. “We were together all the time,” said Bob Kelly. “If you didn’t blend in, you weren’t there very long.” INQUIRER FILE Pat Quinn (standing) coached Behn Wilson (left), Bob Dailey, Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber and Reggie Leach to an incredible 35-game win streak in 1979, but his Flyers team fell just short of another Stanley Cup. They drank together. They hung out together. They fought together. And they won together. Playing with a persistent pugnacity, they shot to the top of the NHL and stayed there, defeated only 12 times in 80 regular-season games. But the 1979-80 Flyers suffered together too, never more so than when, hours after their season was jolted to a close in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, they boarded a bus for a journey back to Philadelphia that would be muffled by disappointment.
