  • Ed Meagher Arena Unveiling
ED MEAGHER ARENA UNVEILING NOVEMBER 2013 NEWS RELEASE RENOVATED ED MEAGHER ARENA UNVEILED CONCORDIA STINGERS HIT THE ICE NHL STYLE Montreal, November 20, 2013 — Not only are the Concordia Stingers back on home ice after the reopening of the Ed Meagher Arena, they’re now competing on a brand new rink surface that conforms to National Hockey League specifications. The modernized arena features the latest and most cutting-edge technology on the market today — an eco-friendly carbon dioxide (CO2) ice refrigeration system. The technology, developed in Quebec, means the arena can operate 11 months a year, compared to seven using the former ammonia system. In addition to a new ice surface and boards, fans will appreciate the new heating system; the burning of natural gas has been replaced by recycled heat generated by the new refrigeration system. The renovations – made possible by a joint investment of $7.75 million from the Government of Quebec and Concordia — involved an expansion of 2,500 sq. ft. The new space boasts larger changing rooms, an equipment storage room, and two new changing rooms for soccer and rugby players. Other renovations include window replacements and a new ventilation and dehumidification system. ABOUT THE ED MEAGHER ARENA AND ITS ATHLETES The Ed Meagher Arena plays host to approximately 40 Stingers men’s and women’s hockey games a year. The Concordia hockey players proudly represent the university at an elite level competing against some of the best teams in North America. Over the years, many talented athletes — including Olympians and NHLers — have developed their skills as members of the Stingers or its founding institutions’ teams.

Great book for any Wings fan.By sheldaniaExcellent book by the "real" creator of the Real Wings dynasty (not Ken Holland). Great inside stories of Mr. I and company; particularly on Mr. I's (RIP) early involvement in coaching changes and hiring practices. Easy read, pulls no punches, well-written. I highly recommend it to any Wings fan.I just read it in017, unfortunately book was written in 2008; so cuts out after the Wings last cup. Hope he writes an addendum one day. I would love to see what he thinks of the Wings actions from 2009 to present.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Jimmy D is a starBy Ludlum fanGreat book by a very interesting guy. It was a 3-2 final with Federov scoring the winner with 28 seconds left on the clock. This one, however, was special as it marked a milestone for one of the greatest professional coaches of any sport in any time. Scotty Bowman, currently the coach of the Detroit Red Wings, was behind the bench in his 2,000th NHL game on Friday night as Detroit beat Vancouver. The previous record was 1,607 set by Al Arbour of the New York Islanders, a record passed by Bowman five years ago.

  • The Blend of Normative Uncertainty and Commercial Immaturity in Swedish Ice Hockey
The Blend of Normative Uncertainty and Commercial Immaturity in Swedish Ice Hockey Re-submitted for publication in Sport in Society (February 2014). By describing and analysing normative uncertainties and the commercial immaturity in Swedish ice hockey (SHL/SIHA), this article focuses on the tension and dialectics in Swedish sport; increasingly greater commercial attempts (i.e., entrepreneurship, ‘Americanisation’, multi-arenas, innovations and public limited companies (plcs)) have to be mixed with a generally non-profit making organisation (e.g., the Swedish Sports Confederation) and its traditional values of health, democracy and youth sports and fosterage. In this respect, the elite ice hockey clubs are situated in a legal culture of two parallel norm systems: the tradition of self-regulation in sport and in civil law (e.g., commercial law). Indeed, the incoherent blend of idealism and commercialism in Swedish elite hockey appears to be fertile ground for hazardous (sports) management and indebtedness. This mix of ‘uncertainty’ and ’immaturity’ has given rise to various financial trickeries and negligence, which have subsequently developed into legal matters. Consequently, the legal system appears to have become a playground for Swedish ice hockey. This article reflects on the reasons and the rationale in this frictional development by focusing on a legal case that comes under the Business Reorganisation Act. The analysis reveals support for a ‘soft’ juridification process in Swedish ice hockey in order to handle the charging tension of the two parallel norm systems. Keywords: entrepreneurship, public limited company (plc.), non-profit-organisation, bankruptcy, business reorganisation, juridification. Introduction Swedish ice hockey, and particularly SHL, the premier league, is claimed to be the most commercially developed Swedish sport in terms of financial turnovers1 and commercial magnetism.
