doherty .......••.......•.•........... Hall of Fame release .................. Poile ....... 1111111 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: POILE SKATES INTO NORTHEASTERN HALL OF FAME It was some 20 years ago that Dave Poile seriously doubted his chances of making the varsity hockey team at Northeastern University. It is some 20 years later that Poile has a chance to ponder his entrance into the athletic Hall of Fame of his alma mater. Poile, a success story in his own right as the Vice President/General Manager of the Washington Capitals, will take the podium for his acceptance speech on Friday evening (May 1) during formal induction ceremonies at Northeastern's Matthews Arena. The sporting evolution of Dave Poile concerned a young man blessed with hockey genes who grew up in the arid state of California wielding a tennis racket. His unrequited -t/iC,/ passion for a game played on solid water wa ~ scenario of his teen athletic years. "There wasn't much ice time in California," recalled Poile, who will join five others for Hall of Fame induction. "I had grown up on skates but tennis was my game in high school." Poile's family background was conducive to spawning a future in hockey. His dad, Norman "Bud" Poile )was a former professional hockey player and General Manager of both the Philadelphia Flyers" and Vancouver Canucks. Pond hockey in Edmonton, where he was raised as a child, had planted the seed, but the Poile family's migration to California temporarily changed young Dave's athletic path. Not to worry, Poile's natural ability for hockey would surface sooner than later.

  • Dennis Maruk: Unappreciated Super Sniper
May 29, 2020 Dennis Maruk: Unappreciated super sniper By Ihor Stelmach He was described by some as another Marcel Dionne. They called him “Pee-Wee,” and he is for sure the most unheralded of the 19 players in NHL history to have scored 60 goals in one season. Diminutive in stature at 5-foot-8, 165 pounds, but with the inner fortitude of a true hockey player, Ukrainian Dennis Maruk broke into the league in 1975 during the golden days of goon hockey. The extremely talented center compensated for his lack of size with a gritty style of play, a confident attitude and a mean-looking Fu Manchu mustache. Facebook.com/dennisjohnmaruk / Dennis Maruk, complete with Fu Manchu mustache, in his California Golden Seals jersey. The first teams he played on, the California Golden Seals and the Cleveland Barons, were both laughing stocks, so Maruk focused on scoring points, hoping other organizations would notice his production. Despite his scoring exploits with dismal clubs, team success was always ahead of any personal achievements. Maruk described it as an athlete’s personal pride and inner drive to succeed in the game, rather than selfish play. His point production could only assist his team, not work against it. If the team could not turn around its fortunes, the hope was Maruk’s playing well and hard would result in an opportunity elsewhere. The 1978-1979 season looked promising for a while, when the Seals-Barons franchise merged with the Minnesota North Stars. It looked like Maruk would finally get the chance to play for a contending team.

THE KNOWLEDGE PROJECT #49 Brent Gilchrist fs.blog My guest today is former professional hockey player Brent Gilchrist. Brent spent 15 years in the NHL, playing 792 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, and Nashville Predators. He won a Stanley Cup with the Red Wings in 1998. In his post-playing career, he has become a mining executive with JDS Energy & Mining. In this conversation, we explore what it’s like to play in the NHL, and the habits that allowed him to have such a long playing career. We talk about the difference between good coaches and bad coaches. We also talk about how he transitioned from hockey to investing, and then venture capital and mining. Let’s get started. #ListenAndLearn Shane Parrish: Take me to the Stanley Cup final. You’re a professional hockey player at this point. This is before we get into mining and post- playing career. What is that like? Brent Gilchrist: I was fortunate enough to play in two Stanley Cup finals, and...fortunate and probably misled a little bit. My first year in the NHL I played with the Montreal Canadiens, and we had a great team. We finished second that year in the standings, and in 1989, we ended up playing the Calgary Flames in the Stanley Cup final. And we lost in six games, obviously really devastating, but as a 21-year-old kid, to play in a Stanley Cup final your first year.... And one story I remember—after we eliminated Philadelphia in the Spectrum in the conference final, I remember sitting next to Bob Gainey on the bus ride from the Spectrum to the airport.
