Remarkable for their instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds actively continue to participate in hunting and other field activities. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to realize that most require regular, invigorating exercise. The breeds of the AKC Sporting Group were all developed to assist hunters of feathered game. These “sporting dogs” (also referred to as gundogs or bird dogs) are subdivided by function—that is, how they hunt. They are spaniels, pointers, setters, retrievers, and the European utility breeds. Of these, spaniels are generally considered the oldest. Early authorities divided the spaniels not by breed but by type: either water spaniels or land spaniels. The land spaniels came to be subdivided by size. The larger types were the “springing spaniel” and the “field spaniel,” and the smaller, which specialized on flushing woodcock, was known as a “cocking spaniel.” ~~How many breeds are in this group? 31~~ 1. BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: There are numerous theories regarding the origin of the Weimaraner Pointing Dog. Only so much is certain: That the Weimaraner, which at that time still contained a great deal of liam hound blood (« Leithund ») was already kept at the Weimar court in the first third of the 19th century. In the middle of the 19th century, before pure breeding was started, breeding was mainly in the hands of professional hunters and gamekeepers in central Germany, mostly in the regions round Weimar and in Thuringia. As the days of the lima hounds passed, the dogs were crossed with the « Hühnerhund » and breeding was continued with this cross. From about 1890 on, the breed was produced according to a plan and regarded as suitable for registration in a stud book. Apart from the shorthaired Weimaraner, a longhaired variety occurred, if only singly, since the turn of the 20th century. Since being admitted to the studbook, the Weimaraner has been pure bred, remaining mostly free from crosses with any other breeds, in particular, Pointers.

    The Hunting Weimaraner: Weimaraner Field Trial Firsts: HPR Field Trials: Along with the German Short Haired Pointer, the Weimaraner has a long history in trialling in the UK. When the first Weimaraners were imported into the United Kingdom in 1952, there was no such thing as Field Trials for dogs which Hunt, Point and Retrieve. Weimaraners ran in Pointer & Setter trials in the 1950s. It wasn’t until the GSPC (in the 1960s) and the WCGB (1970s) began putting on field trials for HPRs, and in the shooting season, was the retrieving of shot game really tested at trials. Winning a first place in a Novice HPR Field Trial is generally accepted as qualifying a dog for Open Field Trials. However, as far as Open Trials are concerned, the clue is in the name – the trial is open to all dogs of sufficient standard, and in the assessment of whether a dog has achieved that standard, the fact that it has been placed first at a Novice trial (or first or second at an All-Aged trial) will simply gain the dog a preference in the draw for the Open trial, should there be in excess of 12 entries. There is no bar, other than the draw preference system, to any dog being entered into an Open Trial. What is certain is that in the modern era, a dog which has been placed first in a Novice field trial will not be permitted to enter further Novice trials. This was not always the case, as in the early decades of HPR field trialling dogs were only barred from further Novice field trials if they had won two Novice firsts.
