Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

The Journal of Ministry & Theology 26 The Glory of God and Dispensationalism: Revisiting the Sine Qua Non of Dispensationalism Douglas Brown n 1965 Charles Ryrie published Dispensationalism Today. In this influential volume, Ryrie attempted to explain, I systematize, and defend the dispensational approach to the Scriptures. His most notable contribution was arguably the three sine qua non of dispensationalism. First, a dispensationalist consistently keeps Israel and the church distinct. Second, a dispensationalist consistently employs a literal system of hermeneutics (i.e., what Ryrie calls “normal” or “plain” interpretation). Third, a dispensationalist believes that the underlying purpose of the world is the glory of God.2 The acceptance of Ryrie’s sine qua non of dispensationalism has varied within dispensational circles. Amid a limited media landscape that otherwise consisted of radio, film, newspaper, and magazines, comics served as a useful tool in engaging readers of all ages to get behind the war effort. The aims of this research was to examine a sampling of messages put forth by comic book publishers before and after American involvement in World War II in the form of fictional comic book stories. In this research, it is found that comic book storytelling/messaging reflected a theme of American isolation prior to U.S. involvement in the war, but changed its tone to become a strong proponent for American involvement post-the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This came in numerous forms, from vilification of America’s enemies in the stories of super heroics, the use of scrap, rubber, paper, or bond drives back on the homefront to provide resources on the frontlines, to a general sense of patriotism. -

For more information, please contact [email protected] Abstract: (Daniel, apocalypticism, William Miller) This thesis is a comparison of how three different apocalyptic religious groups interpret the Book of Daniel as referring to their particular group and circumstances despite the vast differences from the book’s original context. First, the authorship of the book of Daniel itself is analyzed to establish the original intent of the book and what it meant to its target audience in the second century BCE. This first chapter is also used as a point of comparison to the other groups. Secondly, the influence of Daniel on the authorship of the book of Revelation and early Christianity is examined. In the third chapter, the use of Daniel amongst the Millerites, a nineteenth century American apocalyptic religious movement is analyzed. To conclude, the use of Daniel amongst the three groups is compared allowing for conclusions of how these particular groups managed to understand the book of Daniel as referring to their own particular group and circumstances with some attention paid to modern trends in interpretation as well. Analysing a major cultural phenomenon in recent times De Villers, Pieter GR University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article represents a research overview of the nature, historical roots, social contexts and growth of millennialism as a remarkable religious and cultural phenomenon in modern times. It firstly investigates the notions of eschatology, millennialism and rapture that characterize millennialism. It then analyses how and why millennialism that seems to have been a marginal phenomenon, became prominent in the United States through the evangelistic activities of Darby, initially an unknown pastor of a minuscule faith community from England and later a household name in the global religious discourse. It analyses how millennialism grew to play a key role in the religious, social and political discourse of the twentieth century. It finally analyses how Darby’s ideas are illuminated when they are placed within the context of modern England in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century. In a conclusion some key challenges of the place and role of millennialism as a movement that reasserts itself continuously, are spelled out in the light of this history. We did this by sending in a letter of disassociation in August 1982, requesting that our names be removed from membership. Although the act of disassociation was simple enough, the events leading up to that decision involved a great deal. We had personally witnessed many inconsistencies down through the years but had always shelved our doubts. We lived through the 1960's and the false prophecy concerning the end of the world in 1975. However, the issue that became paramount to us was the fact that Jehovah's Witnesses had surrendered their freedom of conscience to their leadership. This was by design; the Watch Tower Society has become an authoritarian, totalitarian organization, ruled by a group of men known as the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. This small group of men, through their representatives, wields absolute control over the consciences and lives of 3.4 million Jehovah's Witnesses. This imposition of conscience affects the lives of members in areas of health (both mental and physical) as well as marriage, raising- children, education, general welfare, and almost every decision-making process imaginable. -

Developing faith in us. - “Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.” (John 13:19) - Isaiah 41:4, 21-24, 26; 42:8-9; & 44:6-7 – God makes Himself known be telling of things that will come to pass. (“The apostle whom Jesus loved.”) - The only apostle not to die a martyr’s death…“the martyrdom of a long life.” Tradition tells us (Iraneus, Jerome, Clement of Alexandria, Eusubius and others agree) that during the Christian persecution of 95-96 AD, Emperor Domitian tried to kill John in a vat of boiling oil. -

The Didache of the Apostles1 The teaching2 of the Lord to the Gentiles through3 the twelve apostles The Two Ways and the First Commandment 1.1 There are two ways, one of life and one of death, and there is much difference between the two ways. 2. On the one hand,4 the way of life is this: first, you shall love5 the God who made you; second, [you shall love] your neighbor as yourself6; but all things, if you want them not to happen to you, then see you do not do to another.7 3. Now the teaching of these words is this: Bless those who curse you,8 and pray for your enemies, but fast for those who persecute you9; for what credit is it if you should love those who love you?10 Don’t even the Gentiles do the same?11 But you must love those who hate you and you will not have an enemy.12 4. Abstain from fleshly and bodily cravings. 4.1 Eschatological Chronology
The Need for Teaching the Eschatological Gospel of Both Comings of Jesus Christ in the 21st Century . 4.1 ESCHATOLOGICAL CHRONOLOGY Part 1 laid out the biblical and theological foundation for this study of the Eschatological Gospel of Both Comings of the Lord Jesus Christ by defining pertinent terms and concepts. Then both the Old and New Testaments’ usage of the Eschatological Gospel and related concepts was addressed (e.g., kingdom of God/heaven, age or world to come, salvation history, kairos versus chronos time, Parousia/Second Coming of Jesus, etc.). This was done in light of the Parable of the Wheat and Tares/Weeds showing that both the kingdom of God (based on the orthodox Eschatological Gospel) and the kingdom of Satan (based on the heretical/“false” gospel) were to coexist on the earth until “the end of the age.” Part 2 then reviewed the historical foundation of the Eschatological Gospel throughout the Church Age. The firm and sure foundation laid by Jesus and His Apostles was the starting point, which was immediately followed by the Early Church Fathers, and then stretched well into the eighth century. There remained a small stream of Eschatological Gospel teaching spanning the rest of the Medieval Church Period, that led up to the Pre-Reformation Period and the beginning of the resurgence of the doctrine. This then continued to build through the Reformation and Post-Reformation periods well into the eighteenth century and culminated with the “birth” of Dispensationalism through Edward Irving and John Nelson Darby in the 1830s. This exploded throughout the rest of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century; which in turn led to the founding of several churches, evangelical ministries and even one seminary upon the Eschatological Gospel (e.g., Plymouth Brethren, Christian and Missionary Alliance, Assemblies of God, Dispensational Baptists, Church of the International Foursquare Gospel, Billy Graham’s and Oral Roberts’ ministries, and Dallas Theological Seminary). -

THE BEAST AND THE REVIVAL OF ROME: MUSSOLINI AND ROME IN THE PREMILLENNIAL IMAGINATION JON STAMM 130 Pages Premillennial dispensationalism became immensely influential among American Protestants who saw themselves as defenders of orthodoxy. As theological conflict heated up in the early 20th century, dispensationalism’s unique eschatology became one of the characteristic features of the various strands of “fundamentalists” who fought against modernism and the perceived compromises of mainline Protestantism. Their embrace of the dispensationalist view of history and Biblical prophecy had a significant effect on how they interpreted world events and how they lived out their faith. These fundamentalists established patterns of interpretation that in the second half of the 20th century would fuel the emergence of a politically influential form of Christian Zionism. -

Envisioned as a false-messiah, deceptive miracle-worker, and prophet of evil, Antichrist inversely embodies many of the qualities and characteristics associated with Max Weber’s concept of charisma. This essay explores early Christian, medieval, and contemporary depictions of Antichrist and the imagined political circumstances of his reign as manifesting the notion of (anti)charisma, compelling but misleading charismatic political and religious leadership oriented toward damnation rather than redemption. Introduction: Obama, Antichrist, and Weber On 4 November 2012, just two days before the most recent US presidential election, Texas “Megachurch” pastor Robert Jeffress (1956– ) proclaimed that a vote for the incumbent candidate Barack Obama (1961– ) represented a vote for the coming of Antichrist. “President Obama is not the Antichrist,” Jeffress qualified to his listeners, “But what I am saying is this: the course he is choosing to lead our nation is paving the way for the future reign of Antichrist” [1].
