Nov.-Dec., 2019______________________________________________________________Volume 60 (no. 6) Upcoming meetings The November meeting of the Jacksonville Shell Club (JSC) will be held at the usual venue, the Southeast Branch of the Jacksonville Public Library <http://www.yelp.com/biz/jacksonville-public-library- southeast-regional-jacksonville>, on the third Thursday (the 21st) - Thanksgiving pre-empting our customary fourth Thurday as it has for over five decades. The venue continues to be Function Room D and gavel time 7:00 PM. David Davies will present the shell-of-the-month, Donax variabilis Say, 1822, from Texas (R). Although he dealt with the topic earlier, he intends to wrap up some previously uncovereded aspects of this coquina’s biology. For many years the Texas populations were considered a subspecies, Donax v. roemeri Philippi, 1849, isolated from its parent taxon by the Mississippi estuary - Say’s subspecies being found in the eastern Gulf and from mid-Florida to VA on the Atlantic seaboard (including local beaches; (L). This position was supported with conchological evidence in an exhaustive monograph (Morrison, 1971). However, molecular geneticists, e.g. Adamkewicz & Harasewych (1994, 1996), found no evidence in support of this dichotomy. As I write this copy, I see that the World Registry of Marine Species (WoRMS: <http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=156776>) follows the latter analysis. Maybe members can bring in specimens from both areas as we did with E/W Florida Pear Whelks a few months back, and we can see for ourselves if there is at least a consistent difference in the shells of these two coquinas. -

Based on carapace features, this taxon is placed in the subfamily Actaeinae, family Xanthidae MacLeay, 1838. Species attributed to this genus are known from Eocene reef environments in Europe. Preservation of crustacean remains in this kind of environment is very rare, and it could explain scarcity of specimens of this genus. For the fi rst time, pictures of types of this genus described during the XIX century and the fi rst decades of the XX century are presented. A study of recently collected specimens from the Eocene of Veneto (Italy) allows to clarify relationships between Phlyctenodes krenneri Lörenthey, 1898 and P. dalpiazi Fabiani, 1911. Presence of P. tuberculosus Milne Edwards, 1862 among the new material is documented. The other known species of this genus, P. hantkeni Lörenthey, 1898 is placed in Pseudophlyctenodes new genus on the basis of differences in morphological features. This species was first collected off Israel in 1961 and is now common along the Levantine coast. Recently a second alien xanthid species, Actaea savignii (H. Milne Edwards, 1834), was found off Israel and Turkey. A single adult specimen was collected in Haifa Bay in 2010, and two specimens were captured off Mersin, Turkey in 2011. Repeatedly reported from the Suez Canal since 1924, the record of the Levantine populations of A. savignii is a testament to the ongoing Erythraean invasion of the Mediterranean Sea. -

The Crustacea Decapoda (Brachyura and Anomura) of Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, with special reference to the obligate commensals of branching corals 1 John S. GARTH Allan Hancock Foundation Univer5ity of Southern California 2 and Eniwetok Ma rine Biological Laboratory Introduction The brachyuran decapod crustaceans of the Marsh all Islands have been reviewed by Balss (1938) and by Miyake (1938, 1939). These reports stem from the German and Jap anese occupations, respect ively, the former being the result of the Pacific Exp edition of Dr. Sixten Bock, 1917-1918, the latter th e result of the Micronesia Expedition of Prof. Te iso Esaki, 1937-1938. According to Fosberg (1956, p. 1), J aluit Atoll was the headquarters of both the German and the Japan ese administrations, a fact that accounts for the preponderanc e of record s from the southern Marshall Isl ands. Additional coverage of the southern Marsh alls was provided by the 1950 Arno Atoll Expedition of the Coral Atoll Program of the Pa cific Science Board, the decapod crustaceans collected by Dr. R. W. Hiatt having been reported by Holthuis (1953). Carcinologically speak ing, the northern Marshalls ar e less well known, collections having been made only at Likieb Atoll by both Dr. Bock and Prof. Esaki and at Kwajalein Atoll by Prof . Esaki alone. Except for the shrimps, reported by Chace (1955), the extensive collections made in connection with Operation Crossroads in 1946- 1947, which includ ed Bikini, Rongelap, Rongerik, and Eniwetok atolls (Fosberg, 1956, p. 4), are at the U.S. Nationa l Museum awaiting stud y. -

LIST OF COLLECTED SPECIES WITH COMMENTS ON SOME SPECIES AKIRA ASAKURA*, SHIROU NISHIHAMA**, AND YASUO KONDO*"" The Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands are subtropical, oceanic islands, located in the north west Pacific (Lat. 27" N, Long. 142" E). The nearest landmass is the Japan Islands situated ca. 1000 km to the north (Fig. 1). Many endemic species have been found in its terrestrial (Ono & Masuda, 1981; Ono & Sugawara, 1981; Kobayashi, 1978; Habe, 1969; Habe et al., 1978) and marine environments (Okutani, 1986; Shigei, 1970; Hirohito, 1974; Habe et al., 1978; Imajima 1970; Sugano, 1973; Ooishi, 1970; Kurata et al., 1975). The authors visited Chichijima Island of the Ogasawara Islands three times, in April 1986, May 1989, and June 1990. The purpose of the visits was to study the biological and ecological aspects of the intertidal animals there, which have received little attention to date. In this paper, a list of species collected through those trips is presented, which includes one new species of a hermit crab, Pagurus insulae in Asakura (1991a), two new subspecies of gastropods, Notoacmea schrenckii boninensis in Asakura & Nishihama (1987a) and Monodonta perplexa boninensis in Asakura & Nishihama (1987b), and one new record of a hermit crab, Calcinus guarnensis Wooster, from Japan (Asakura, 1991b). -

Such assessments can contribute to a more comprehensive evaluation of natural history museums in the Philippines, as well as biodiversity management. This review showed that local museums in the Philippines have much to improve in terms of their accessibility and geographic coverage in order to effectively cater to research and conservation needs of the country. Online access to databases was lacking for local museums, making it cumbersome to retrieve collection information. The UST museum held the most species and subspecies across all museums (4899), comparable to the national museums of countries such as the USA and France. In terms of size, there were larger Philippine mollusk collections in museums abroad. Majority of mollusk specimens come from Regions 4 and 7, while the CAR and Region 12 were least sampled. Publications on Philippine mollusks are dominated by taxonomic and biodiversity research. -

Based on this study, the Mediterranean Xantho granulicarpus Forest, 1953 is clearly distinguished from the Atlantic Xantho hydrophilus (Herbst, 1790) and Monodaeus guinotae Forest, 1976 is identical with Monodaeus couchii (Couch, 1851). For the species studied, additional information is given about their geographical distribution, as well as an identification key based on selected, constant features.
