November 18, 2020 Mercyhurst University honors veterans with a new program and a week of observance Fifty large American flags, affixed to 6-foot-high poles, line the boulevard as visitors enter Mercyhurst University's East 38th Street main gate in Erie. The striking visual is an annual Veterans Day-week fixture at a school ranked as among the "Best Colleges for Veterans" in the northern region of the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report. Gannon to project 'Love Notes' performances on campus theater building Gannon University's Schuster Theatre will project its next production on the theater building at 620 Sassafras St. Projected performances of "Love Notes" begin at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Alvernia University is reducing food waste by helping hungry students Alvernia University and its campus foodservice provider, Aladdin, are partnering to help students in need of hot meals while simultaneously reducing food waste. Aladdin is converting food shrink left over from Alvernia's dining hall — that's excess prepared food that never left the kitchen — into frozen meals students can reheat later. LECOM Health Opens Second COVID-19 Unit in Response to Surging Cases The new unit enables LECOM Health to expand post-acute care to COVID-19 patients and can accommodate up to 50 individuals. In March, a post-acute care unit at LECOM Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (LNR) opened in anticipation of a surge in coronavirus patients. As of Monday, that unit is near capacity, which led to the decision to open a second unit. -

This is a new date as we had a conflict in our schedule. We wanted to communicate the date change early so that you could make any necessary plans to your schedule. College Decision Day for Seniors Friday, May 3 the Seniors at Haverford High School make their final decisions on where they will be attending College. A breakfast was held in the East Cafeteria in their honor. Congratulations to ALL OUR SENIORS in their future endeavors! Business students from Ms. McCarty's class win Amazon gift card of $300.00 for winning the Boeing competition Haverford Business students represented us well at yesterday’s Junior Achievement Company Program Regional Competition! The JA Company Program was designed to bring high school students together to learn how to fill a need or solve a problem in their community by launching a business venture. All students involved have a hand in managing all aspects of finance, marketing, sales and management during this 13-week program. At the end of 13 weeks, the companies come together and compete for the chance to advance to Nationals. Yesterday’s competition was comprised of 4 elements – a team interview, stage presentation, booth presentation and individual interviews. -

2018 GREATER PHILADELPHIA COLLEGE RANKINGS CRITERIA AFFORDABILITY GRADUATION & RETENTION SOCIAL MOBILITY CLASS SIZE Michael Clark M.P.A. OVERVIEW We have learned that the best correlation for individuals to earn family sustainable wages is either a higher education degree or a vocational certificate tied directly to a trade[1]. Without a higher education degree or vocational certificate, we have learned that individuals are often “stuck” in the cycle of poverty[2] due to the fact that if they successfully increase their earning potential their public benefit subsidies decrease at the same rate thereby keeping them poor. In a recent study,[3] we learned that in order to move out of poverty an individual with dependents needs to earn the equivalent of $22-$25 per hour. Yet, persons earning between minimum wage and $22-$25 per hour for the most part continue to be impoverished because as their wages increase their public subsidies decrease. Once a person earns above $22-$25/hour they can transition from being reliant on the system to becoming an independent contributor to society. Upon researching jobs that pay $22-$25 per hour we learned that most require a higher education degree or vocational certificate[4]. WHY COLLEGE RANKINGS Understanding the above facts, we concluded that one of the most effective and sustainab le models to address poverty is by helping individuals obtain a college degree. However, given that most impoverished or low-income individuals experience significant barriers to attending college[5] we ranked Greater Philadelphia’s Colleges based on criteria that most impact low-income individuals' access to higher education including: affordability; social mobility; graduation/retention; and class size. -
