Hutchinson" is an excellent day to day account of the Siege of Lathom House. From the gunnery standpoint St. John O'Neill is disappointing, as buildings were his interest and he refers to the gun only insofar as it affects castles and fortifications. Generally there are masses of references to the use of guns, but only very infrequently does one find precise information as to range and effect, and the picture must be built up by extracting appropriate evidence from numerous actions.

    The Stirling Castles Prince Rupert patent demi-cannon. D.M.McElvogue Introduction The Stirling Castle was one of 30 great ships of the line built as part of Samuel Pepys 1677 shipbuilding programme. The programme consisted of 1 first rate, 9 second rates and 20 third rates (Fox 1980:154). The new ships initial design was found lacking. The cost of the alterations to the vessels was met by the King himself, Charles II. To simplify maintenance the King insisted the masts, spars, rigging and fittings of each rate be standardised, whilst Pepys ensured the ordnance was also standardised. This marked the first steps in the control of naval architecture by the naval administration. The size of the building programme strained the resources of the Royal Dockyards and meant that the new ships were ordered in two instalments. The first instalment consisted of 3 second rates and 12 third rates, and the second instalment of 1 first rate, 6 second rates and 8 more third rates. Figure 1a Stirling Castle being launched at Deptford The Stirling Castle was a third rate laid down as part of the first instalment of ships in 1677. It was built by John Shish and completed in two years, being launched at Deptford on the south bank of the river Thames in 1679 (figure 1a). At 1,114 tons the Stirling Castle was slightly larger than the average 3 rate as laid down in the specifications of the 1677 programme, this being 1,008 tons (see table 1).     COLONIAL CANNON SOUTH CAROLINA ARTILLERY 1670-1813 by Fitzhugh McMaster Artillery played an important part in the history of many of the original colonies of North America. In 1664, the King of England provided the Proprietors of the prospective colony of South Carolina with six sakers and six minions. Two of the minions were mounted on field carriages, and the other 10 cannon were mounted on the fortification carriages, each with four small wheels or trucks. These were all lost when the ship transporting them was wrecked in 1665, but the inclusion of field carriages indicates possible consideration of mobility and field service. In 1670, approximately 140 Englishmen established the colony of South Carolina on the west bank of the Ashley River and rapidly fortified a nine-acre triangular area with earthworks and palisades. Four demi-culverins and eight sakers were promptly set up to cover both the river and its landward sides. The site was in territory claimed by Spain, and the nearest colony of any strength was an English colony at St. Augustine. The area was also populated by Indians whose intentions were suspect. In August 1670, just four months after the initial landing, a Spanish amphibious expedition from St. Augustine arrived to stamp out the new colony. Apparently impressed by the defenses and the militant attitude of the English, the Spaniards remained on their ships outside the bar until driven off by a hurricane. Their Indian allies departed shortly thereafter when the iron cannon in the fortification was "scaled" (fired with reduced powder charges to blow the rust out of the barrels).

Most were raised from the seafloor between the 1960s and 1990s, but this study comprises the first in- depth research into their design and manufacture. The importance of this kind of study lies in the fact that ordnance is commonly found on shipwrecks of this time. A greater knowledge of guns will help provide information about the ships from which they came. Careful documentation and study of the Museu de Angra cannon will add greatly to their value as museum exhibits, by allowing museum patrons to better understand where the guns came from, how they were cast, and why they were important.

Recovered from site Fall 2006 Introduction In October of 1997 the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources began an effort to better understand and eventually recover the remains of an eighteenth-century shipwreck (31CR314) thought to be the Queen Anne's Revenge (QAR). The location of the shipwreck site corresponds with where, in 1718, the wreck reportedly occurred. Analysis of the artifacts suggested an early eighteenth-century context for the wrecking event. Thirteen years after its discovery, and thousands of recovered artifacts later, nothing has been found to indicate the shipwreck site is anything other than the former flagship of Blackbeard the Pirate. The following report introduces the cannon from site 31CR314 that have been conserved and analyzed through 2006. Small arms and ammunition will be addressed in separate reports. Artillery analysis can reveal information about both manufacturer and end user of the artifact. Manufacturing information comes from the artifact itself: composition, style, or markings. Information about the user comes more from their context within the site. For instance, the quantity and caliber of the artillery complement has significant implications relating to the size and purpose of a ship. This is one reason there was an emphasis from the beginning of the project to locate all of the cannon on the site.

    THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NAVAL TRUCK GUN CARRIAGE: HISTORY, ARCHAEOLOGY, AND DESIGN By Katrina Bunyard March 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. Donald Parkerson Major Department: Program in Maritime Studies Truck carriages represented the primary naval gun mounting of European and American navies throughout the Age of Sail. Developed during the early to mid-16th century, truck gun carriages were found upon armed ships for over three centuries. They allowed for gunners to control and aim their pieces, promoting the development of naval guns of increasing power. During the 19th century, the truck carriage became viewed as a stagnant medieval leftover that underwent little change. Some later scholars further propagated this belief. This thesis seeks to examine the truck carriage’s place in the development of modern western navies, evaluate the nature of its design and construction development, and explore its presence in the archaeological record. The truck carriage developed from the concerted efforts of artillerists across Europe, developed in sophistication in tandem with naval administrations, and played a role in shaping the living and working space aboard warships. Numerous archaeological sites contain the remains of several types of gun carriage, providing ample material for further study. Through the development of a gun carriage database, statistical testing was undertaken to explore the nature of design change over time.
