The NSS of Bharathi Women's College Has 5 Units, Comprising 5 The NSS of Bharathi Women’s College has 5 units, comprising 5 programme officers and 500 volunteers. Inspired by the motto NOT ME BUT YOU, the NSS units actively organize and participate in regular community outreach activities like awareness programmes, rallies, blood donation camps, medical camps, cleaning drives( on and off campus), wall painting , pond cleaning, collection of relief materials during time of natural disasters , observing/ celebrating significant dates throughout the year in association with NSS University of Madras, Stanley Medical College, Sankara Nethralaya, Vasan Eye Care, Election Commission, Greater Chennai Corporation, RPF, Environmentalist Foundation of India etc., An annual Special Camp is organized in Arumandhai and its neighbouring villages. SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES: NSS team won the Mega Project Award 2011 from University of Madras for helping with the record sale of handloom products. Ms.M.Priya and Ms.P.Sumathy won the award for Best Volunteer at Pachaiyappa’s College for the year 2013. National Integration Camp, Bangalore: G.R. Divya (Dept. of English ) and M. Sweetha (Dept. of Mathematics) represented University of Madras team and won the First Prize. (March 15-21, 2018) Dr. S. Lavanya, NSS Programme Officer represented University of Madras as Contingent Leader in the National Integration Camp organized by NSS Regional Directorate, Chennai held in Alagappa College of Engineering and Technology, Karaikudi from 10 December, 2018 to 16 December, 2018. D. Gayathri, III B. Sc., Mathematics also participated in the Camp. Two of our volunteers R. Soundhariya, II B. Sc., Zoology and S. Bavadharani, III B. Sc. Maths made the institution proud by participating in the State RD Parade on 26th January, 2019. National Adventure Festival: NSS volunteers S. Bavadharani, III B. Sc. Maths, S. Priyadharshini, II B. Sc., Maths and R. Soundhariya, II B. Sc., Zoology took part in the National Adventure Festival, held in Chandigarh from 02 February 2019 to 10 February, 2019, as part of the NSS Team from the University of Madras. Youth Parliament Festival: On 19 January, 2019 Ms. K. Gayathri, I B. Sc., Biochemistry got selected to represent Chennai District at the State Level in the District Level Youth Parliament Festival Selection held at Stella Maris College, Chennai. Youth Talk Symposium to End Child Marriages: On 15/02/2019 Ms. T. Sakthimeena and Ms Sweatha from II B A English participated in Youth Talk Symposium to End Child Marriages in Stella Maris College, Chennai. The programme was telecast live.     CHAPTER Establishing OER Practice in India: The University of Madras V. Bharathi Harishankar Abstract Open educational resources (OER) are a nascent phenomenon in India, enabled by the growth of information and communication technologies and open source technologies. OER herald a context wherein knowledge and education are free in terms of content, teaching–learning practices and technology. OER also demand that there be freedom to access, use, modify and reuse. However, institutional policies, individual mindsets, copyright issues and restrictions of proprietary software hinder the actualisation of this collaborative ideal. At present, there are no clear exemplars of OER in India and no benchmarks either. The International Development Research Centre-funded PANdora sub-project, entitled, “Evaluation of the Effectiveness of RLO-Based OER in Enhancing Soft Skills of Students” and carried out at the University of Madras, is an attempt to design and create OER, assess them for their reuse potential and evaluate the impact on individuals (teachers and learners) and participating institutions. The underlying belief is that in India, OER cannot succeed only as a social responsibility but must offer frames for collaborative teaching–learning, and provide viable models and mechanisms for reuse. The present study records the different steps in the OER process, from conception to evaluation and reuse, which involve: • Assessing the readiness of individuals and institutions to embrace OER. • Devising collaborative mechanisms. • Matching technologies and pedagogies by creating templates. • Designing content that has the potential for the four Rs. STUDENT WRITING IN THE UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS: TRADITIONS, COURSES, AMBITIONS By Susaimanickam Armstrong University of Madras (India) Writing courses and related initiatives at the University of Madras make available to the students the skills of writing. According to their programs and interests, students are trained in many forms of writing, including professional, creative, and research. This profile describes some techniques and assignments used as part of these writing oppor- tunities in various disciplines. It attempts to critically understand the role of the university in forwarding new trends in writing and com- munication that play a major role in establishing careers of students and that are shaping the development of the academic and creative world. The author describes in detail his own expanded uses of writing in a literature course. Further, the essay spells out the progress of “soft skills” programs in several languages, by which students gain new hori- zons in language acquisition. Finally, it projects a range of new writ- ing/communications initiatives by which the university can expand its importance in the burgeoning economy of its region. The 153-year old University of Madras (UOM) is the mother of almost all the old universities of Southern India. It is an affiliated, state university under the Government of Tamil Nadu.
