  • Your Shout: Oxford and the Implications - Part Two
Your Shout: Oxford and the Implications - Part Two Comments on the closure of Oxford and the future of the sport continue to pour in. Here's the latest batch we've receieved. "If you alienate your customers over petty things, it will cost you" By Keith Butler I was sorry to hear of Oxford’s demise, particularly mid-way through the season. With this starting off a debate on speedway’s future & failings, I thought I’d add my two-penneth. I've been a Speedway fan for over 40 years on and off & do not intend this as a knock on the sport, more food for thought. When my kids were younger, I could take them to watch Coventry relatively economically. As they got to 15 they suddenly became adults price wise. They were too old to be children & too young to get concessions as students. Hence our visits to Brandon as a family diminished. My youngest daughter has consequently lost all interest in Speedway. My eldest however has retained an interest, but as a student now can only afford occasional visits. So Point 1 - When you’ve captured the interest of youngsters, don’t price them out of attending too soon. In the 70’s attendances were considerably better than today. You could literally take a picnic with you, sit on chairs along the back straight and share your drink, food & humour with all around. Not too long ago I was stopped from taking a small bottle of water into a stadium and told all foodstuffs must be bought on the premises.

  • The Cost of Watching Speedway
The Cost of Watching Speedway Some comments on the cost of watching the sport have been recently received through our feedback column. We decided these points would make more sense as a single article than scattered through many of our weekly updates. Your thoughts on the comments made are, as ever, more than welcome. Dudley Jones It seems to me that the Elite League is in serious trouble, with Oxford folding, Reading changing hands suddenly and talks about Peterborough seeing the season through. I am sure that speedway will survive, but perhaps it's time for a fundamental re-think? I cast my mind back to my first interest in the sport, in 1962, are there parallels with today? Then Ipswich folded (the week before I first saw Norwich Stars at the Firs). Then the National League was dying on its feet (with much larger crowds), yet we had a healthy youngster in the form of the 'lower level' (but possibly more exciting), Provincial League. Surely the sport needs to take a long look, at the terraces, at costs, at entertainment. I dont think its about admission costs, football is often much more per head. Let us have more local riders brought on, less commuting abroad, and much more showmanship. A radical idea - go 'provincial' again, to the roots. Only have foreigners if they ride only for British teams (same for home grown riders) maybe drop out of SGP and have regular race nights instead, to nurture the 'speedway habit'. Above all make speedway exciting (more basic bikes, closer racing, less costs) and a jolly good night out.

  • 2021 Rider Index
RIDER INDEX 2021 The following is an A-Z list of riders who are contracted to appear in 2021, at Premiership, Championship and National League level. NOTE: All entries for the current season are as per the declared team line-ups, but do not necessarily relate to actual appearances for the named clubs, particularly in the case of No. 8s and/or guest riders; (2) The symbol II after a team's name differentiates between a club's National level and higher league side, when more than one team was operated in the same season; (3) With regard to ‘Club Honours', riders have been credited with a contribution to a league title-winning side if they rode in 6 or more matches of the team's league programme - and with a cup-winning contribution if they appeared in at least one leg of the final; (4) The Speedway Grand Prix and World Cup statistics will be updated for participating riders after each round of the 2021 series. ALSO NOTE: Premiership, Championship and National League and Cup racing didn't take place during the entire 2020 season because of the Coronavirus pandemic. We have, however, retained the riders in their intended teams in the 2020 Rider Index for reference purposes, but those 2020 team listings have been removed for the 2021 Rider Index. • The Fans' Favourites
INTRODUCTION Welcome to this FREE speedway e-book, the first of its kind as far as we're aware. This book collates the memories and impressions of riders that we've received for our 'Dream Team' feature on the Speedway Plus website. This book runs from Adams to Zetterstrom giving the supporters' opinions on many riders from the past and present. The comments were made between 2000 and 2007, therefore if you find a comment suggesting that a 27 year old Premier League second string is a stick-on to be World Champion, it's likely to be one of the older contributions. This book differs from any other as it's written entirely by a cross section of supporters, from virtually every track in the land and with varying experiences of speedway. If a rider isn't listed, it's because nobody has chosen them as one of their seven favourite all time riders. Similarly if a little known rider has been included, it's because they've made sufficient impression on someone to be nominated. A definite case of democracy in action. Clearly, given that the comments were all written in this present century, the majority of the riders are from the British League era (1965 onwards). However, there are a number of vintage favourites in there also. If you want your own personal favourites to feature in any subsequent editions then fill in our 'Dream Team' submission form on the website. We hope you enjoy the book.
