À CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior), pelo apoio financeiro concedido em forma de bolsa, sem o qual não poderíamos ter realizado e concluido esta pesquisa. 7 RESUMO A presente pesquisa tem como objeto de estudo a modalidade deôntica, e como corpus, a série televisiva americana, House (2004-2014). O objetivo geral dessa pesquisa é utilizar os pressupostos funcionalistas de Dik (1989), no que diz respeito ao contexto linguístico, para analisar as ocorrências de modalidade deôntica no discurso médico. Os problemas secundários que nortearam esse trabalho estão dispostos, a seguir: a) Como os verbos plenos e os verbos modais/auxiliares diferenciam o grau de modalização no discurso médico televisivo na série televisiva House (2004-2012)? b) As diferenças na relação hierárquica entre fonte e alvo proporcionam a ocorrência de expressões asseveradoras ou mitigadoras de valores deônticos, influindo na conduta médica na série? c) Como a fonte instauradora da modalidade deôntica transforma a imagem da conduta médica, ou corrobora com ela, na sociedade representada na trama televisiva? Usamos os conceitos de modalidade de Lyons (1977), Palmer (1979), Bybee (1995), Neves (2006) e Lopes (2009), entre outros. Focalizaremos na modalidade deôntica, um domínio funcional que trata do modo como o falante diz algo exprimindo a sua vontade, seja de forma asseverada ou mitigada. Os resultados apresentados dizem respeito aos três primeiros episódios das quatro primeiras temporadas da série, totalizando doze episódios. O material em modalidade escrita foi encontrado em rede virtual e conferido por nós. Analisamos 398 ocorrências, foi possível concluirmos que o meio de expressão e o valor deôntico mais recorrente são os de modo verbal (257) e de obrigação (289), respectivamente. Como já esperado, tanto a fonte (362) quanto o alvo (336) deôntico, tendo o médico como enunciador/receptor, obtiveram números significativos. Portanto, com base nas análises realizadas, podemos concluir que os verbos modais oferecem mais dinamicidade ao tipo de discurso televisivo estudado, impondo valores hierárquicos de polidez, e por vezes disfarçando uma ordem sob o pretexto de uma suposta necessidade performada pelo verbo ‘precisar’ (need) tal qual pode ser associado ao proposto por Palmer (1986), a respeito do verbo ‘want’ (querer). Com a conclusão desta, poderemos expor novas observações teóricas sobre o domínio funcional da modalidade em Língua Inglesa, emitindo juízos de valores concernentes ao discurso televisivo e as suas relações comunicativas. Valores deônticos. 8 ABSTRACT This present research has as object of study the deontic modality, and as its corpus, the American television series, House (2004-2012). Our overall objective is to use the functionalist assumptions of Dik (1989), regarding the linguistic context, to analyze the occurrences of deontic modality in the medical discourse of the characters of the series. The secondary problems that guided this work are shown, as follows: a) How full verbs and modal/auxiliaries verbs differentiate the degree of modality in the medical television discourse, in the TV series House (2004-2012)? b) Do the differences in hierarchical relationship between source and target provide the occurrence of stronger or mitigatigated expressions of deontic values, influencing the medical conduct on the show? c) How does the established deontic modal source transform the image of the medical conduct, or corroborates with it, in the society represented in the television plot? The works and concepts about modality by Lyons (1977), Palmer (1979), Bybee (1995), Neves (2006) and Lopes (2009), among others, were used as the theorethical base of this research. Therefore, it will focus on the deontic modality, a functional area dealing with how the speaker says something expressing their will, whether using a stronger or mitigated form. The results presented relate to the first three episodes of the first four seasons of the show, totaling twelve episodes. The data was found on the web and checked by us. So far, we have analyzed a total of 398 events. It was possible to conclude that the means of expression and the deontic value most recurrent are the verbal (257) and the obligation (289) ones, respectively. As expected, both the source (362) and the deontic target (336) have the doctor as enunciator / receiver, achieving significant numbers. For this reason, we conclude that the modal verbs offer more dynamism to the type of television discourse studied. They impose hierarchical values of politeness, sometimes disguising an order under the pretext of a supposed necessity performed by the verb 'need' (precisar) as it may be associated with the proposed by Palmer (1986), about the verb want (querer). Finally, we hope to expose new theoretical observations about the functional domain issuing judgments concerning the values in the televised speech and their communication relationships in English Language. When the first medical dramas were broadcasted, the main characters were good, peaceful, intelligent, competent, empathic, and successful physicians. One of the most famous, even outside the US, was Marcus Welby M.D. (1969-1976) of David Victor –which this year marks 50 years since its first emission. This depiction began to change in the mid-1990s. While maintaining the over positive image of medical doctors, TV series started to put more emphasis on their negative characteristics and difficulties in their interpersonal relationships, such asER (TV) by Michael Crichton (United States) and House MD (TV) by David Shore (United States). In these series, physicians were portrayed as arrogant, greedy, and adulterous, and their diagnostic and therapeutic errors were exposed. The last two series are The Good Doctor (TV) by David Shore (United States), with a resident of surgery with autism and Savant syndrome, and The Resident (TV) by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi (United States), where serious institutional problems appear.

The New Voices ​ Lab is part of Sundance Institute and YouTube’s ongoing commitment to supporting independent creators working in ​ ​ narrative forms. This effort follows the Sundance Institute’s annual Episodic Story Lab that began in 2014 and the ​ Sundance Institute | YouTube Creators Intensive launched in 2016. Fellows will work with creators, showrunners and episodic producers to further the development of original short-form projects in a supportive environment that encourages risk-taking and innovation, led by Michelle Satter, Founding Director of the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program, and Jennifer Goyne Blake, Senior Manager of the Episodic Storytelling Initiative, with curriculum support from executives at YouTube. Over three days, Fellows will participate in an intensive writing workshop, directing the actor workshop, one-on-one creative story meetings, writers’ rooms, and case study presentations.
