Allegra of the doctorate honoris causa. It was on the occasion of the inauguration of the academic year 1955-1956 that, at the initiative of the then Rector, Fr. They have posted several anti-Valtorta articles on their website, one of which is an anti-Valtorta article by Marian Horvat. The most widely-read anti-Valtorta articles in English-speaking countries are those published on EWTN or by those who work for them. I don’t feel the need to discuss concerns about this particular organization here because others have already done thorough investigation and studies of EWTN (such as Christopher Ferrara’s book EWTN: A Network Gone Wrong) and the refutations their anti-Valtorta articles speak for themselves and are readily available here: An Analysis and Refutation of All the Top Anti-Valtorta Articles. However, I do feel the need to address traditioninaction.com because, since they are a traditional Catholic media outlet, they are considered by some traditional and conservative Catholics to ordinarily be more trustworthy than many organizations of the mainstream Catholic media. On some topics and in certain cases, this is true. Unfortunately, on this particular topic, they have proven not to be trustworthy or reliable as my refutations of their anti-Valtorta articles and this article demonstrate.

It includes a number of disciplines—history, political science, theology, religious studies, gen- der studies and sociology. Not only is the series inter-disciplinary, it also encourages inter-religious dialogue. It covers the presence of the Catholic Church, the Protestant Churches and the Orthodox Church in China. While Chinese Protestant Churches have attracted much scholarly and journalistic attention, there is much unknown about the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church in China. There is an enor- mous demand for monographs on the Chinese Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. This series captures the breathtaking phenomenon of the rapid expansion of Chinese Christianity on the one hand, and the long awaited need to reveal the reality and the development of Chinese Catholicism and the Orthodox religion on the other.   • Father Gabriele Allegra
    Turin Shroud included in Catholic Chinese Bible – Father Gabriele Allegra Father Allegra was born on 26 December 1907 to an Italian family in Sicily as an eldest son. His parents had 3 sons and 3 daughters. He was ordained in February 1930 by the Vatican and first came to China in 1931 to study Chinese in Hunan (south-central part of China), which was in pursuit of his aspiration to translate the Bible into Chinese. He re-entered China in 1941, after 2 years of medical care back in Italy and he persisted on the translation work during these periods. He moved to Hong Kong in 1948 (which was a British colony at that time), shortly before the change of the regime, and continued with his work on the translation. The first completed version of the translated Catholic Chinese Bible was printed in 1968 in Hong Kong and greater China. The image of the Shroud was included on the first page. Father Allegra passed away on 26 January 1976 in Hong Kong and was buried in Happy Valley until 1986, when his remains were moved back to Italy. His contribution and role model as a Servant of God for Catholics was first confirmed by the Vatican in 2002. Report from a local Catholic Diocese father: After a delay of 10 years, the beatification cause of Venerable Gabriele Maria Allegra (1907-1976) is scheduled for completion in September 2012. He is the first person from the Hong Kong diocese and the Franciscan province of Taiwan-Hong Kong to be so blessed.

Zhuo Xinping 卓新平, former director of the IWR and now director of the Chinese Association for Religious Studies, said in his speech that experts had already compiled a first list of 50 religious sites that can be used as models to promote Chinese-style religious buildings; of these 50, some also reflect in a special way China’s “red revolution culture.” Zhuo said that they are an encouragement to hold on to China’s cultural self-confidence and to continue work on its realization of the Chinese Dream.

The First Catholic Bible in Chinese 5 DOI: 10.1515/ijas-2015-0001 RAISSA DE GRUTTOLA CA’ FOSCARI UNIVERSITY OF VENICE The First Catholic Bible in Chinese: Gabriele Allegra and His Translation Abstract: Christian missionaries play an important role in the history of the relationship between China and Europe. Their presence in China has been widely explored, but little attention has been paid to the role played by the Bible in their preaching. From 13th to 19th century, although they did not translate the Bible, Catholic missionaries preached the Gospel orally or with catechisms. On the other hand, the Protestant missionaries had published many version of the Chinese Bible throughout the 19th century. It was only in the 20th century that the Franciscan friar Gabriele Allegra decided to go to China as a missionary to translate the Holy Scriptures into Chinese. He arrived in China in 1931 and translated from 1935 to 1961. He also founded a biblical study centre to prepare expert scholars to collaborate in the Bible translation. Allegra and his colleagues completed the translation in 1961, and the fi rst complete single-volume Catholic Bible in Chinese was published in 1968. After presenting the historical background of Allegra’s activity, a textual analysis of some passages of his translation will be presented, emphasizing the meanings of the Chinese words he chose to use to translate particular elements of Christian terminology. This study will verify the closeness of the work by Allegra to the original Greek text and the validity of some particular translation choices.

    A Brief Survey of the History of Chinese Translations of the Hebrew Bible1 Yiyi Chen Peking University Since the publication of two articles about myself,2 scholars and laymen alike, who now know a little about me, have been asking me about the need for another Chinese translation of the Hebrew Bible. While in my mind the answer to this question has always been a positive one, the time frame in which I would embark on such an effort has been indefinitely postponed due to my personal situation. Nevertheless, in order to justify my answer to such a question, a brief survey of the history of Chinese translations of the Hebrew Bible is inevitable. Although there are a couple of excellent books written on this topic,3 such a task would be much more difficult and unimaginable without the Internet and the plethora of articles written on this topic and disseminated among Christian sponsored online forums. Most if not all of these articles are written in Chinese (either in simplified or traditional characters), and some of these are written in meticulously detail about one or another version of the translation.4 These Internet sources are quoted in detail in their respective places in this article.5 The only relatively comprehensive survey written in English addressing this topic is slightly outdated since it was finished in 1975.6 The intention of this paper is to write an updated brief survey in the English language, so that a more systematic answer can be provided to interested readers and 1 I owe much to Professor Youde Fu, who invited me to the International Symposium of Inter-Religious Dialogue: Confucianism, Judaism and Christianity held in Jinan, China.
