  • Tom Tom Club's Christmas Stocking Stuffers
2002 - Tom Tom Club's Christmas Stocking Stuffers Interview with ex-Talking Head and Tom Tom Club's Chris FrantzDec. 15, 2002 Just in time for the holiday season ex-Talking Heads turned Tom Tom Club alumni Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth are filling their fan's Christmas stockings with two new downloadable holiday chestnuts from their website, http://www.tomtomclub.net . Both Chris and Tina, along with David Byrne and Jerry Harrison were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year, and while their work with the Talking Heads is what they may be best known for, the wedded couple have also, for the last twenty years, been busy making their own brand of uninhibited party music with their band Tom Tom Club. Surprisingly, its their own music with the Tom Tom Club, and not the Talking Heads, that has permeated itself into so many different styles of music over the past two decades, as their 1983 hit "Genius of Love" is the most sampled song of all time, with artists such as 2PAC, Ziggy Marley, the X-ecutioners and Mariah Carey either sampling bits or recreating the entire song. Livewire's Tony Bonyata caught up with Chris to talk about the Heads, the impact of Tom Tom Club, as well as their delightful new stocking stuffers. Livewire: I understand that you're giving your fans a couple of early Christmas presents on your web site this season. Chris: Yeah, we are. The first one, which is already posted on the homepage of our site, tomtomclub.com, is a very traditional, beautiful and kind of chilled-out French carol called "Il Est Ne," which is French for "He Is Born." It's very traditional, and I'm sure you'll recognize it when you hear the melody.

LOCAL Album Charts DISC-laimer: Since many of the stores participating in this feature deal in vintage vinyl, these charts are not meant to be volume-based sales indicators (although there is some of that here). Rather, they are a mix of popular titles and best-sellers combined with unique and rare finds that have come through each store’s stacks over the last month. The idea is to let music collectors know who is carrying what type of product. If you like this feature, tell the stores you saw them listed in The Marquee. • Patrick Painter, Inc
PATRICK PAINTER, INC Press Release Glenn Brown April 2 – May 7, 2005 Patrick Painter Inc. proudly presents new paintings by Glenn Brown. The exhibition opens April 2nd, and continues through May7th, 2005. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, April 2nd, 2005, 6 – 8 pm. The exhibition features 7 new paintings, in which the artist continues his practice of appropriating figures and subjects from historic and current visual sources from fine art to popular culture. This body of work merges painted copies of great master paintings with references to film, literature and music. Using photographic reproductions of original art works, often themselves inaccurate copies, Brown subverts the images he appropriates: surfaces are flattened, impastoed brushstrokes exaggerated, colours heightened and images distorted and cropped. The Revolutionary Corps of Teenage Jesus; Hunky Dory; Led Zeppelin; Greetings from the Future; Seventeen Seconds; Pornography; and Earth are titles of the paintings, alluding to album title and songs from mostly Romantic, Gothic or Punk bands known for their melancholic lyrics and social commentary. Brown’s work references the predecessor - the cultural history - by band, by art historical reference, adding his own humorously dark twists along the way. Iconographic portraits by historical and modern painters such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Salvador Dalí and Frank Auerbach reoccur thought out Brown’s re-interpretation and resurrection of still lifes and portraiture. Brown collapses the barriers that distinguish ‘high’ art from ‘low’ culture and fuses images from different historical eras and cultural practice, resulting in visual hybrids that confront the viewer with an imaginary world. The artist further indulges his obvious love of painting, centering his practice on a hermetic, elitist, and astute engagement with painting’s history and attempts to further along the turn of it’s waning disfavor in the eyes of “high art”.
