Placenaming on Cape Breton Island A different view from the sea: placenaming on Cape Breton Island William Davey Cape Breton University Sydney NS Canada [email protected] ABSTRACT : George Story’s paper A view from the sea: Newfoundland place-naming suggests that there are other, complementary methods of collection and analysis than those used by his colleague E. R. Seary. Story examines the wealth of material found in travel accounts and the knowledge of fishers. This paper takes a different view from the sea as it considers the development of Cape Breton placenames using cartographic evidence from several influential historic maps from 1632 to 1878. The paper’s focus is on the shift names that were first given to water and coastal features and later shifted to designate settlements. As the seasonal fishing stations became permanent settlements, these new communities retained the names originally given to water and coastal features, so, for example, Glace Bay names a town and bay. By the 1870s, shift names account for a little more than 80% of the community names recorded on the Cape Breton county maps in the Atlas of the Maritime Provinces . Other patterns of naming also reflect a view from the sea. Landmarks and boundary markers appear on early maps and are consistently repeated, and perimeter naming occurs along the seacoasts, lakes, and rivers. This view from the sea is a distinctive quality of the island’s names. One of the points of difference between the bearings of the Royal and Parliamentary Burghs on the one hand and those of the I Police Burghs on the other lies in the fact that the former carry castles and ships to an extent which becomes almost monotonous, while among the latter these bearings are rare. On the other hand, the Police Burghs very frequently assume a charge of which A 079 2 Aberchirder. examples, in the blazonry of the Royal and Parliamentary Burghs, are very rare : this is the cross, derived apparently from the fact that their market-crosses are the most prominent of their ancient monuments. In cases where the cross calvary does not appear, a cross of some other kind is often found, as in the present instance. -

PARISH OF SKIPTON* HAVE reserved for this parish, the most interesting part of my subject, a place in Wharfdale, in order to deduce the honour and fee of Skipton from Bolton, to which it originally belonged. In the later Saxon times Bodeltone, or Botltunef (the town of the principal mansion), was the property of Earl Edwin, whose large possessions in the North were among the last estates in the kingdom which, after the Conquest, were permitted to remain in the hands of their former owners. This nobleman was son of Leofwine, and brother of Leofric, Earls of Mercia.J It is somewhat remarkable that after the forfeiture the posterity of this family, in the second generation, became possessed of these estates again by the marriage of William de Meschines with Cecilia de Romille. (Private collection) 1 John Bligh, 4th Earl of Darnley Attributed to Thomas Phillips, National Trust Mount Stewart, Scotland. 2 Introduction Richard John Elmore is one of the many nineteenth century political campaigners who have fallen out of view and hence consideration when we discuss the history of the period. Elmore was an activist who made valuable contributions to the debate on Catholic Emancipation and also a campaigner that sought improvements in the economic relationships that existed between Ireland and the rest of the then United Kingdom, as Ireland was a part of the Empire at the time. He was a close friend of Daniel O‘Connell and a director of the National Irish Bank; he was a defender of his Catholic business associates and, for a period, a major employer of linen workers at his factory n Clonakilty, Co. Cork. Richard as born in around 1785 and took his first appointment as a hospital assistant with the 1st Garrison Battalion in January 1807.1 According to Elmore he had moved to Clonakilty around 1807 with the intention of practicing as a physician, however he could ill afford to continue to practice as he often had to provide his services without charging a fee due to the poverty amongst the peasantry and he was ‗obliged frequently to put my hand into my own pocket; no man could possibly avoid it that possessed one spark of humanity in his 1 WO 25/75/92. -

THE FIFTH EARL OF ARGYLL AND MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS When Mary, Queen of Scots' name is linked to that of a man most people think immediately of high romance and passion, or even murder and rape, with a large dollop of tragedy thrown in. Three husbands had come and gone by the time Mary was twenty-five and during her long dreary single years in an English prison there was still continuous intrigue and speculation about a fourth. But the tragedy and Victorian-style melodrama of her marriages to Francis II, who died as a teenager in 1560, Darnley, who was murdered in 1567, and Bothwell, who fled Scotland in 1568, went mad in a Danish prison and died in 1578, have overshadowed the less-highly charged relationships she had with the Scottish nobles of her court. One of the most important of these was the affectionate friendship with her brother- in-law, the fifth earl of Argyll. Archibald Campbell, the 5th earl was not much older than Mary herself. He was probably born in 1538 so would have been only four years old in the dramatic year of 1542. It witnessed the birth of Mary on 8 December and, within a week, the death of her father, James V [1513-42], which made her ruler of Scotland. A regency was established with Mary as titular queen, but the main struggle for power was between those Scots who favoured the alliance with France and those who wanted friendship with England. The key issue was whether the young Queen would marry a French or an English prince. -

The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry. -

Libeling Painting: Exploring the Gap between Text and Image in the Critical Discourse on George Villiers, the First Duke of Buckingham THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ivana May Rosenblatt Graduate Program in History of Art The Ohio State University 2009 Master's Examination Committee: Barbara Haeger, Advisor Christian Kleinbub Copyright by Ivana May Rosenblatt 2009 Abstract This paper investigates the imagery of George Villiers, the first Duke of Buckingham, by reinserting it into the visual and material culture of the Stuart court and by considering the role that medium and style played in its interpretation. Recent scholarship on Buckingham‘s imagery has highlighted the oppositional figures in both Rubens‘ and Honthorst‘s allegorical paintings of the Duke, and, picking up on the existence of ―Felton Commended,‖ a libel which references these allegories in relation to illusion, argued dually that Buckingham‘s imagery is generally defensive, a result of his unstable position as royal favorite, and that these paintings consciously presented images of the Duke which explicitly and topically responded to verse libels criticizing him. However, in so doing, this scholarship ignores the gap between written libels and pictorial images and creates a direct dialogue between two media that did not speak directly to each other. In this thesis I strive to rectify these errors by examining a range of pictorial images of Buckingham, considering the different audiences of painting and verse libel and addressing the seventeenth-century understanding of the medium of painting, which defended painterly illusionism and positioned painting as a ritualized language.
